I tried this one on Mom, who not only needed to be told to say Control Freak Who, she didn't get it after the fact either (I think sometimes she deliberately lives under a rock, but then again, she knew what moondancing was to my amazement).

There, now it's a music thread, you're welcome (*BG*).

My Hilary never got any Knock Knock jokes when she was young. She would just make up random stuff,

Knock Knock
who's there
Pizza
Pizza who
Pizza all over your face ha ha ha ha

Knock Knock
who's there
open
open who
open the door and come in ha ha ha

We'd all just look dumbfounded.

What is moondancing?

I do not know the "clone on the throne" tonight butt I can guess a whole lot of mods that narrow down to only two names....and neither is a male.

It is the intention of this posting to rescue this thread and pull it back 'above the line.'back to the peaseable kingdom....where all may contribute. It is true folk and not just a joke.

"An old forfeits game. The players seat themselves in a circle and one, take a wand, points it at his neighbor repeating the rhyme with mock solemnity. The player pointed at then becomes the one who points, and so on round the circle. 'It is a game', remarks Chambers, ' in which the only art consists in keeping one's gravity while saying absurd things.' Those who laugh or smile must pay a forfeit. Sometimes, to increase the difficulty, the one pointed at is made to take a more active part, and the following dialogue takes place.

1. "Knock, knock! (Thumping the floor with stick.)
2. "Who's there?"
1. "Buff."
2. "What says Buff?"
1 Buff says Buff to you again."
and I say Buff to you again."
2. "Methinks Buff smiles."
1."Buff neither laughs nor smiles,
But looks in your face ,[or strokes his face]
With a comical grace
And delivers the staff to you-sir."

OED quotes Cotgrave's French=English dictionary (1611), 'Esclaffer, to buff, or burst out into a laughter."

Gargoyle

I remember taking great pains to teach my daughter how to tell a joke, so much fun in itself. When she wakes, I'll ask her which it was, she'll remember.

My favorites:

Say Knock-Knock.

Came back from a coupla days away and noticed that Azizi has started a separate thread on the subject of "knocking" in songs and poetry. I understand that someone posted some ugliness in response to her starting her thread. That is very disturbing. It seems to me that Azizi's thread is a good place to go for folks who want to talk about the roots of "knock knock" or any other thing that you might think belongs "above" the line.

As for me, I don't care if this thread is above or below the line. I was just looking to enjoy some jokes. I love the one about Richard Nixon (how soon they forget) and the arrest you later. LOL.

I hope this thread continues, just for the fun of it. I also hope Azizi's thread continues for the more expanded look into the origins of things. It's all good.

Knock Knock jokes are every bit Folk as songs.

Their origins and variation (as in Folk process) are folklore.

And let it be recorded this is the first time I would argue against a Joe Offer proclamation. Oooer.

I used to do light bulb jokes at a Folk Club and no one realised I was delineating something that ordinary people did and would be revered for in 100 years time. Until I pointed-out the motivation. They thought I was getting cheap laughs. As if!

It is very difficult to see this when it is just what people do, now. I refer you to the "Seeds of Love" incedent in Sub Hamden as witnessed by C#. And look what the insight did for him!

Since these jokes are often played in families, I'm reminded of the lock & key jokes I used to play with my son. This could be another thread, but I'm not sure there are that many of 'em, so it'd be a short thread.

Whatever kind of lock I am, you're that kind of key, OK?

I'm a big lock.
(A) I'm a big key.

I'm a gold lock.
(A) I'm a gold key.

I'm an old lock.
(A) I'm an old key.

I'm a don lock.
(A) I'm a don key.

I'm a mon lock.
(A) I'm a mon key.

[About this time, the other person notices what he's just said, and the game ends.]

I suppose there could be a thread about this kind of homophone humor (humour, to you Brits), but I can't think of too many examples except knock-knock jokes and the lock & key jokes.

Bob
