Ah well, it seems from this website that 1 October is Older People's Day for the UN and UK. So how are Mudcatters planning to celebrate?

Kitty

Each year, it seems that there are fewer peopleolder than I am.   I hope this situation improves.

I guess I'll just creak slowly out to the Getaway ....and stay up all night singin' and carousin'.

Maybe I'll sing "Too Old to Cut the Mustard" and "Old & Gray & Only in the Way"

HK
Damandblastyoutohell! Having decided my radio programme today On The Road Again 1000 - 1300 UK time would be a no-theme day (That means grabbing a bunch of CDs and let it go where it wants to!) I now have a theme to pursue!
Really though HK, thanks for this. I only wish I had more time do do a bit of myth-shattering. Followed the links from the website and found this "SANDWELL BOROUGH COUNCIL – Full of Life Festival
Held at The Public in West Bromwich the Full of Life Festival involved over 20 agencies offering a range of information and advice including a mobile library, NHS advice unit, and the West Midlands Fire Service. Visitors were able to try various activities including dance mats, mosaics, quizzes and Tai Chi and entertainment included local celebrities and performers as well as the world famous Zimmers, who were joined by the choir of Cronehills Junior school for a performance of 'Let It Be'.
Local resident Joan Cutler, aged 84, was one of around a thousand people who attended the event. Whilst Joan enjoyed the entertainment, activities and information on offer, she had a clear highlight:
"I am mad about fire engines and have always liked a man in uniform. When I saw the fire engine I was as excited as a kid – I know I'm an old woman but I still think like a young person. This has made my day." Good luck to her!

I was at a recent meeting of an umbrella group for community organisations and as part of being elected to the committee, I had to get up on my hind legs and talk about my involvement in Community Radio. After the meeting I was approached by a woman whoruns a dance-group for senior cits. Despite my having explained at some length, what community radio was all about, she reckoned I was just the man to be a DJ for "her" club. I declined gracefully but enquired as to what kind of music they used? "Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby!"
Well, I'm about to enter my 70th year and my formative years meant skiffle, Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochrane as well as a mountain of Folk and Country. Determined not to give up though, she finally asked if I wanted to join the group as a member! (Exit Left pursued by a bear)!
I have already diaried this date for next year to make it a biggy but by fortunate coincidence, I will be joined in the studio today by my mate Slim Pickens who is 72 and plays killer pedal stell guitar and fiddle.
We need to show these younguns that it's not all FS & BC and "guess the number of teabags in the jar!
Nil Carborundum - Don't let the bastards grind you down!

Eddie

Until a couple of years ago I had no trouble recognising young people but all 'older' people looked alike and I had trouble telling them apart.
Now, all of a sudden, older people have developped individual features and I have no trouble recognising the one's I've met before . . . but young people all look the same.

Long ago I read somewhere that all one's life, people who are 15 years older than oneself are old.. I don't find it to be quite true but close enough as a rough gauge.

I do notice, though, that those are who are 15 years younger than I are young :)

"Older People's Day"

Daft way of saying it. Everyone is older than someone else. Even a newborn baby.

Older folk should rejoice in the realixation that, every year, there are fewer and fewer people to tell them:"When you get to be my age...."

McGrath - use of the term "older people" might have been because the age for becoming an OAP in receipt of state pension in the UK has become a moveable feast (particularly for women, as the age is currently being revised upwards to equalise with men)? I suspect it refers to people who have reached their 60th birthday and who can currently get free bus travel without being registered as disabled, and go to U3A (University of the 3rd Age).

Eddie - all best wishes for next year's full of life!

Kitty

I was going to make some smart remark about older people not being able to remember what they did today anyway, but I think I'd better just keep my young mouth shut :-)

My story:

"You are old, Father William, the doctor did say,
And your hair is turning to gray.
If you continue to stand on your head,
You will injure some more vertebrae!"

(I used to stand on my head on my birthday...up to 55.)

Dammit, missed it! Now I'll have to wait until next year. Hope there'll be a next year.

On the other hand, I could just make the most of every day with other members of the GODS (Growing Old Disgracefully Society). Anyone coming down the pub?
