Subject: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 02 Oct 09 - 03:44 PM Glad to see Rio get the Olympics. Rio should do a good job of it. Quite a kiss-off to the U. S., the bettors favorite. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: katlaughing Date: 02 Oct 09 - 04:52 PM I was surprised when they said there'd never been an olympics in South America, so I am glad they got it. I think the USA went over the top..Oprah AND the Obamas, plus everyone else was just too much, imo. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: Les from Hull Date: 02 Oct 09 - 05:31 PM They do share it out among continents. I was sure it would be Rio, but sadly I'm not a betting man! |

Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: 3refs Date: 03 Oct 09 - 06:58 AM I won a $20 bet on this one! |

Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: Riginslinger Date: 03 Oct 09 - 11:48 AM The deserved it. I agree with Kat about Oprah and the Obamas. The news media was aghast that Chicago wasn't picked in spite of them. I wondered if Chicago had been eliminated because of them. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: Alice Date: 03 Oct 09 - 11:57 AM No, Chicago was eliminated because 1) the US makes it too difficult for people to travel here, one of the major concerns that was expressed, and 2) it was time for a South American country to be the host. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: pdq Date: 03 Oct 09 - 12:47 PM Mexico had the summer Olympics back in 1968. Geography aside, the Spanish-speaking world includes Mexico and not Brazil, which is mostly Purtuguese-speaking. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: CarolC Date: 03 Oct 09 - 12:51 PM Mexico is not in South America. It is in North America. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: pdq Date: 03 Oct 09 - 01:01 PM Obviously, and I didn't say it was. I said that Mexico has a lot in common with the majority of South American. Carol C, is there anything you can't turn into an argument? |
Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: MGM·Lion Date: 03 Oct 09 - 02:38 PM Actually, surely Mexico is in **Central** America? Or is it not so regarded over on your side? |
Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: pdq Date: 03 Oct 09 - 02:49 PM Politically, it is in Latin America, which trumps the geographic distinction in most ways. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: Alice Date: 03 Oct 09 - 03:22 PM Mexico is definitely not Central America. The small countries of Central America are proud of being Central America, separate from Mexico and South America. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: pdq Date: 03 Oct 09 - 03:43 PM ...yes indeed, number6. I think I shall pull out Jethro Tull's "Thick As A Brick" and listen to it tonight in honor of a few Mudcat regulars. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: Riginslinger Date: 03 Oct 09 - 11:06 PM I think it's a good thing that a South American country has the opportunity to host the games. It seems to me like the officials made a good choice. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: wysiwyg Date: 03 Oct 09 - 11:18 PM So glad Rio got it-- cannot think where in the urban sprawl of Chicagoland they could have squeezed in all the venues and housing. There just isn't any ROOM, without dispossessing all the poorer folks. Would have been a BIG redlining/gentrification thing. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: MGM·Lion Date: 04 Oct 09 - 12:19 AM I think it unmannerly to sigh & denounce me as 'thick as a brick' for not knowing something which you did — & which is, btw, usually differently perceived over here anyhow. Thank you Tug for your support. 'GUEST#6' & 'pdq', I think you should be fucking well ashamed of yourselves — but I don't expect you are; never mind, I am ashamed enuff on your behalfs to do for all... |

Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: pdq Date: 04 Oct 09 - 07:57 PM Perhaps the point should be made again. Although no country in South America has ever hosted the Olympics, the country of Mexico has. Mexico is in a cultural region known as Latin America where most people speak Spanish, but not all. Here is a list of some languages spoken in that region: Spanish, Portuguese, French, Quechua, Aymara, Nahuatl, Mayan languages, Guaraní, English, Haitian Creole, Jamaican Creole and Papiamentu. It's nice to see Brazil get the games. They are a major power in the New World. Latin America has 1/12th of the worlds population. {a few Mudcat folks need to read things more carfulley and other need to avoid taking things personally, especially when they clearlyaren't the subjects} |
Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 04 Oct 09 - 08:13 PM Mexico and Brasil are not in the same region. One is in North America, the other in South America. Obvious to any child with a world globe pencil sharpener. The official language in Brasil (their spelling) is Portuguese, not Spanish. Please stand corrected. (Sorry, pdq, just being obstreperous). |
Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: pdq Date: 04 Oct 09 - 08:24 PM Repeat for the "thick as a brick" crowd: Brazil and Mexico are both in Latin America. It is a cultural region where people feel closer ties to each other than they do to their neighbors to the north. Congratulations to Latin America on getting the Olympics for the second time. {Q, when you misquote people, you look bad, not me} |
Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: Alice Date: 04 Oct 09 - 08:46 PM I lived in Central America. I grew up with Cubans. I've traveled in almost every state in Mexico. Just because you want to see Latin America as all one identity does not mean that everyone who lives in Mexico, Central America, South America or the Caribbean sees it your way. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: pdq Date: 04 Oct 09 - 08:54 PM Repeat for the "thick as a brick crowd": people from Latin America tend to feel closer in spirit to each other than they do, perhaps, to a cowboy in Montana or a Rabbi in New York. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 04 Oct 09 - 09:00 PM About as different as Irish and Sicilians- share a common religion (more or less) and the same continent but not much else. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: Alice Date: 04 Oct 09 - 09:06 PM This all started with the distinction of Mexico having had an Olympics and that South America had not yet had one. Mexico is not South America, and anyone from Mexico would laugh if you tried to convince them that just because they are called part of Latin America, having had an Olympics in Mexico doesn't make Brazil a first. I think you've missed my point, so I won't waste time trying to make it again. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 04 Oct 09 - 09:24 PM I think we've got pdq's goat by now. Getting a bit hot on the left rear burner. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: pdq Date: 04 Oct 09 - 09:30 PM Actually, this is beginning to sound like bigotry on the part of a couple of Spanish-speakers against the Portuguese. I expect that Brazil will do itself proud. Hope a couple of other folks here wish the same. |

Subject: RE: BS: Rio by the sea-o in 2016 From: GUEST,number 6 Date: 04 Oct 09 - 10:28 PM what PDQ said is true ... people from Latin America tend to feel closer in spirit to each other than they do, perhaps, to a cowboy in Montana or a Rabbi in New York." Latin America No ... they are not as different as Irish and Sicilians they are somewhat the same .... fact being many of the populace of Uruguay, Brazil, the Argentine are decendents of non Iberian speaking European immigrants. In fact Che Guevera's father's name is Lynch (descendent from Ireland) I'm pretty sure all Latin Americans are proud that Brazil will be hosting the Olympics. biLL |
