Lief, son of Erik the Red, set foot on the North American continent 500 years before Christopher Columbus. In the year 1000, on the island of Newfoundland, this Icelandic explorer landed. The Vikings established a settlement there, but only stayed for 2 years.

The day is celebrated just a few days before Christopher Columbus Day,
which is Oct. 12. there have been runestones found dating from this time.

Are the4re any songs commemorating this event?

There are some native American songs from the period, translates something like.....bugger off europeans, we're doing quite nicely and don't wish to be discovered.

Perhaps Leif Erikson day should supplant Columbus day.

No, perhaps several million americans that descended from asians who came across the land bridge now replaced by the Bering Straits millenia before have a prior claim.

great to hear about Omar....those Durham new hamshire folks do not
offer much in the way of music, but in enthusiasm they make up for it!

there is another holiday...ABC...Americans Before Columbus....

or as they say in Canada--First Nations

or here is another plan...discovery day...

http://david.hedges.name/archive/2009/08/16/time_to_discover_a_new_october

here is a petition for native american day to be established.

http://www.petitiononline.com/indian/petition.html

or...let's see....St. Brendan and his jolly monks came in 500
or about 500 years before Leif Erikson, who came 500 years before
Christopher columbus..seems as if every 500 years....

http://gosouthamerica.about.com/cs/southamerica/a/CulDiaRaza.htm

http://zedillo.presidencia.gob.mx/welcome/PAGES/culture/note_12oct.html

and Native American Day is sometimes celebrated on oct 12,
and sometimes on the 4th Fri in Sept.

Are any songs commemorating this event? On such an occasion I would likely sing Ken Graydon's, "Seafaring Men:"

    http://www.kengraydon.com

You seafaring men
You deep water rovers
You East India sailors
You brave Gloucester men

You bold Viking raiders
You old Cape Horn traders
Your grandsons salute you
You seafaring men

From Gloucester to Biscay
And on to San Paulo
'From Bath to New Brunswick
And on to Calais

From Dundee to Dover
And half the world over
You were either arriving
Or sailing away

So here's to the shades
All you salt water sailors
And here's to the memories
You left to us then

You sons of John Cabot
You old Cape Cod whalers
You Portuguese sailors
You seafaring men

We wish you calm waters
And a fair wind behind you
We wish you safe passage
Wherever you be

We wish you snug harbors
At the end of your journey
We wish you contentment
You men of the sea

You seafaring men
You deep water rovers
You East India sailors
You brave Gloucester men

You bold Viking raiders
You old Cape Horn traders
Your grandsons salute you
You seafaring men

-Adam Miller

The song omits the 'Vikings of the Pacific', the Polynesians who voyaged to Hawai'i, Easter Island, and perhaps South America.
