Subject: Lyrics translation from French, please?
From: Marilyn

The song "Quand je bois du vin clairet" is fabulous and my husband and I would very much like to sing it but we would like to know what it means and my schoolgirl French isn't up to the job of translating it properly. I can get the general idea (drinking song) but not the detail.

Is there a fluent French speaker out there who would be willing to translate it for me, please?

Do hope someone can help.
Regards to all,
Marilyn

Main lyrics (the actual tune)
============================

Quand je bois du vin clairet,
Amis, tout tourne, tourne, tourne, tourne,
Aussi desormain je bois
(the e in desormain has acute accent)
Anjou or Arbois
Chantons et buvons, a ce flacon faisons la guerre
(grave accent on a, cedilla on c in ce and flacon)
Chantons et buvons, mes amis, buvons donc.

Harmony Part
=============

Le bon vin nous a rendu gais,
Chantons, oublions nos peines, chantons.
En mangeant d'un gras jambon,
A ce flacon faisons la guerre.
(Grave accent on A, cedilla on the c in ce and flacon)

Thanks in advance

A very rough translation

When I drink claret wine
Friends, everything spins, spins spins
So henceforth I drink
Anjou or Arbois
Let us sing and drink, let's make war on this flagon.
Let us sing and drink, my friends, let's drink

Good wine has made us happy
Let's sing, forget our cares, sing
While eating a fat ham
Let's make war on this flagon.

You don't ask for a translation of the third verse, but hey, on Mudcat we don't let that stop us!

Buvons bien, buvons mes amis,
Trinquons, buvons, vidons nos verres.
Buvons bien, buvons mes amis,
Trinquons, buvons, gaiement chantons.
En mangeant d'un gras jambon,
À ce flacon faisons la guerre!

Let us drink well, let us drink, my friends,
Let us toast (or click glasses), let us drink, let us empty our glasses
Let us drink well, let us drink, my friends
Let us toast (or click glasses), let us drink, let us sing merrily.
Whilst eating a fat ham,
Let us make war on this bottle.

I thought it was LA nouba but it's easy to get the gender wrong in the dark - see Tom Brown's recording of John Mitchell's My Proper Name is Clarence for further details! :-)

Help much appreciated Snuffy and YB!

Young Buchan - I didn't know there was a third verse so that's a bonus for me.

Many thanks,
Marilyn
