how can a man who mistakenly started a war become president of the EU?

does the post control any armed forces?

who would you have instead?

Is Blair still defending his decision to join George W. Bush's war? If he has expressed regret, then maybe he's learned his lesson and won't be so foolish the next time.
Or is it some other war he mistakenly started, because I'm pretty sure that Iraq was W's war...
I think Blair would make a good EU president.

It's basically a Mickey Mouse job - no actual power, no real work, just a title and the access to attention that goes with it. And of course the money. You can see why it would appeal to Blair.

I would suggest that the brave "liberals" who defended our "democracy" outside the BBC last week, should wait a bit before binning their Anti-fascist placards, their Balaclavas and pick shafts.....at last there maybe something real to protest about.

A real honest to goodness British war criminal, who's personal input and the input of his cowardly cabinet dragged us all into a conflict that left more than a million dead and christ knows how many mutilated and limbless......As far as the UK was concerned this was Blairs war, but how many of the "liberals" who tried to deny free speech to a tin pot dictator..... and beat up several young policemen while they were at it.....will be back on the streets to protest the election of a real monster? Not fucking one, because Blair is their monster.....a nice liberal democratic politician who smiles a lot and talks "newspeak"

Are there any bigger hypocrits in this world than the "democratic left"? these threads are full of them, twisting and turning, apologising for mass murder and passing the death sentence on any who don't use the proscribed words

Griffin a threat to our "democracy"...dont make me fuckin laugh.
If we really had a democracy the biggest threat by far would be the "liberal left"...Ake

HMaj has shown a very steady hand on the political controls available to her, and much better judgment than B.Liar.

I don't much like the idea of a Pres, and I like the idea of B.Liar still less. Kinnock would be OK. The single most important thing would probably be to keep Berlusconi out (although there are some A8 loonies who could be even more malign albeit less effectively venal)! How about Mrs Brown?

Not so Joe....Blair went to war with his eyes wide open....scary stary open!.....The people tried to change his mind.....huge demos against the war, but his cowardly cabinet supported him because he was seen to be electible.

They voted for their jobs.....and a million deaths; and one of them (Jack Straw) sat in judgement on a deluded Nick Griffin, branding him a "danger"

Blair and his war cabinet should face the fate handed down to Saddam, rather than a cosy job as leader of the EU

It takes a lot to get middle Britain off their collective backsides and onto the streets but Blair managed it and still he ignored them - thus far I agree with you Ake, but it's possible to dislike both the politics of war and of hate - let's try and stick to the thread though

That could be a good reason for wanting Blair to get the job - it might actually make it more likely he got put on trial.

Right on, Akenaton.

I have never placed much credence in the Christian fundamentalist notions of an "Antichrist" who will ascend to political power in Europe and deceive the world and lead it into disaster....but...

I can hardly think of a better candidate than Tony Blair to assume that role if anyone ever does. He looks soooo "liberal". He sounds sooooo "liberal". He smiles and twinkles in such a convincing fashion. And he's as phony as a 13 dollar bill. He should be on trial for war crimes.

"Don....I am not referring to "Liberal Democrat"....the party, but "liberal democrat"....the excuse."

If you're talking about British politics then at least take the trouble couch it in British terms. Your pejorative use of the term 'liberal democrat' to describe B.Liar is utterly wrong. He's on the right-wing of a slightly right-of-centre party referred to these days as 'New Labour' to distinguish it from the old socialist party.

B.Lair is a neo-Thatcherite poodle of right-wing nutters like George Bush and would make a bloody awful EU president as he universally distrusted in the UK for siding with the US's war. He sold the country out to the capitalist money-men and took Thatcher's creed of self-interest to new levels.

The people he represents don't need to vote to make their voices heard; money is power in today's society.

You are wrong Jack.....the form of govt in use all over Western Europe is referred to as "liberal democratic". Liberals, Conservative, Labour, Welsh and Scottish Nats, even SF in Northern Ireland come under that banner.

In practice, Mr Blair is a very good example of a modern liberal democrat......a hypocrite and master manipulator.

The new leader of the EU should certainly be a woman....and untainted by the criminal chicanery of the last decade.....

You won't remember voting for the next thing they come up with either, Paco...or the one after that. It's not about voting. It's not about removing economic barriers. It's about micro-management of society from the tippy top of the pyramid on down...regardless of what the general public really wants or thinks.

For a look at "the pyramid" in symbolic form, check out the backside of an American one dollar bill. It's right there in plain view, and it's a VERY old mystic symbol. They who rule see us. We don't see them...although we do seem some of their PR front men like Tony Blair.

I thought Blair was too busy solving the Arab/Israeli problems to stand for EU president. Or has he now become bored of that project? Is there anything tangible to show for the past 12 mths or so of Blair diplomacy in the Middle East? I suspect that he realises he's been completely sidelined by Obama's Middle East initiatives and so now needs a new toy to play with. As he's got no chance of the EU Presidency, maybe he'll have a go at solving climate change next? Then again, I think Al Gore is keeping that one for himself....

A man stopped off at a country bar in Buckinghamshire and ordered a beer. Tony Blair appeared on the lunchtime television news talking about how he could do so much if he got the position as EU President. After a few sips, he looked up at the television and said, "see him, that has to be the biggest horse's ass of a man I've ever seen." A customer reading a paper at the end of the bar stood up, walked over to him, and decked him. He got up and gave himself a shake. Just then Cherie Blair appeared on the platform to hug Tony. the guy just couldn't keep his mouth closed "See her, that one is married to that creep and if you check her out from behind, She has an ass like a horse". This time, a woman walked over and kicked him in the privates. "F this!" the man said to himself, climbing up onto his feet. he said to the barman, "This is bloody Blair country isn't it!" "Nope," the barman replied. "Horse country!".
