Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Aeola Date: 01 Nov 09 - 10:43 AM OOPS! I should have said the Formby Branch of the RAFA |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Capo da Monty Date: 01 Nov 09 - 11:11 AM Oh dear this is worse than Sunray FC's posts for detailed info! I have a rough idea where it is but even after TV's post the follow up post was less than informative. |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Rasener Date: 01 Nov 09 - 11:30 AM LOL CdM |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Les in Chorlton Date: 01 Nov 09 - 11:44 AM Apparently men have been reported walking out into the Mersey to escape Formby. L in C |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Les in Chorlton Date: 01 Nov 09 - 11:45 AM Sorry that was Crosby - quite close by L in confusion |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: GUEST,PeterC Date: 01 Nov 09 - 12:14 PM As many English place names are repeated in New England, sometimes several times, it helps to be precise about location. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Rasener Date: 01 Nov 09 - 12:35 PM Ah I have it now. RAFA being Rafa Benitez who is the manager of Liverpool Football Club in England, so its going to be at Anfield. Wow, you need a few people to fill that. :-) |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: bubblyrat Date: 01 Nov 09 - 01:10 PM Formby ?? By George !! |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Rasener Date: 01 Nov 09 - 02:50 PM Thats strange I didn't see your post when I posted Terry, and yet there is quite a time difference. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Aeola Date: 01 Nov 09 - 05:17 PM AH THERE IT IS!! I SORT OF ASSUMED THAT ANYONE INTERESTED IN GOING TO THE RAF CLUB IN FORMBY L37 WOULD PROBABLY BE FAIRLY LOCAL AND WOULD KNOW WHERE IT WAS. I DO LIKE THE IDEA OF THE LADIES GOLF CLUB BUT MEMBERSHIP IS PRETTY EXHORBITANT. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Rasener Date: 01 Nov 09 - 05:35 PM Have we upset you, as you are shouting at us :-) Its just the map indiicator was fair and square on the ladies golf club. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Tattie Bogle Date: 01 Nov 09 - 05:41 PM I believe there are RAFAs in other towns in the UK, so it is not unreasonable of other posters to ask for a wee bit more detail. Googling RAFA comes up with 14,600,000 hits! Yes, over 14 and a half MILLION! |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Rasener Date: 01 Nov 09 - 05:45 PM Well if you don't want anybody to turn up, then not providing info is sure the best way to go :-) |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Les in Chorlton Date: 02 Nov 09 - 05:34 AM Hasn't this gone all rather well? For those unable to find Formby: The (1st & 3rd)Wednesday Singaround will be at The Beech, Beech Road, Chorlton, Manchester this Wednesday as it happens. All are welcome. L in C |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Leadfingers Date: 02 Nov 09 - 05:48 AM Sadly both Formby AND Chorlton are a bit too far away for an evening , unless I get paid work in the patch ! |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: LesB Date: 02 Nov 09 - 12:36 PM This is an interesting case of thread creep. The thread started by Aeola mentioning he had heard a rumour "I hear the RAFA club is organising a folk club, with support from some Bothy members." and ended up as a geography lesson. I asked around at The Bothy last night & got a few blank expressions until I spoke to Pete Rimmer & he said that Kevin Bargan, who is in a group called the Travelling People (who had a club in Formby 30yrs ago) was thinking of starting a club & Pete offered to pop down & do a spot if required. Cheers Les (from Southport nr Formby, not Chorlton nr Manchester):-) |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Rasener Date: 02 Nov 09 - 12:43 PM This gets worse as there are 3 Les's now on this thread, including me :-) LesB should be called Sherlock Les :-) |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: GUEST,Clive Pownceby Date: 02 Nov 09 - 01:01 PM I used to play at Formby RAFA Club regularly with a Ceilidh band a good few years back. Concert room, big stage-mirror ball set-up and you'd need a PA - maybe it's planned to be a concert-type club eventually? It's by Freshfield station, not Formby too! (Merseyrail Northern line) All rather confusing. Kevin has bags of experience though, and I wish him well. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 02 Nov 09 - 01:22 PM Right! It's all clear now - there's a Les in Formby (not in Chorlton) and a Les in Chorlton (not in Formby) ... and another one ... possibly? Oh yes, a Villan (aka Les). Phew! I'm glad we've cleared that up! |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Aeola Date: 02 Nov 09 - 02:35 PM LES clear this up. If you want to promote interest then make a mistake!!!! OOPS! should have said 'deliberate' mistake. Anyway I've enjoyed the comments etc and as Clive says there is a big room with stage but the Folk Club will be held in the bar. There's a Tetley mild on in good fettle for 2.05 per pint. I hope Kevin makes it a success, I will support him as best I can! Just so theree's no mistake where Formby is!!!!!--- It's the home of the rare red squirrels and natterjack toads!! So from rumour to geographic and wildlife!! |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: LesB Date: 02 Nov 09 - 02:36 PM I'm Les from Southport. "LesB should be called Sherlock Les :-) " Elementry my dear Les, (or should it be I'm Sparticus) Cheers Les |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Rasener Date: 02 Nov 09 - 02:46 PM >>It's the home of the rare red squirrels and natterjack toads!! << That tells us everything LOL LesB LOL |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: TheSnail Date: 02 Nov 09 - 03:16 PM I've looked and, as far as I can tell, there isn't a Formby in New England. There is, however a New England Guest House in Formby. Even if there was a Formby in New England, Formby would still be Formby which, as it happens, is in Merseyside although, when my father was growing up in Freshfield, it was in Lancashire. It's been there for over a thousand years and is under no obligation to change its name. If there was a Formby in Massachusetts, it would be called Formby, Massachusetts. But there isn't. |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Dave the Gnome Date: 02 Nov 09 - 06:05 PM Eeeee - Freshfield. Not heard that for donkeys. My mate Dave Taylor took off in about 3rd year of secondary school to a Catholic seminary which, if memory serves, was at Freshfied. We went to visit him the following year and very shortly after he gave up the idea of becoming a priest. Dunno if it was owt to do with our visit but we did meet some very nice girls on Southport Pleasure Beach:-) On the subject of being precise with the location, surely just the mention of the Bothy should have given the game away? I work on the basis that if you do not know the area you are unlikely to visit the club anyway - Here in the UK they do tend to be a bit more local than than the huge distances travelled in the US. I know there are exceptions but why do we need to specify every little detail just so people on the other side of the country, or even world, can say 'It's too far'? :-P Cheers DeG |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Zany Mouse Date: 02 Nov 09 - 06:14 PM Maybe Formby/Liverpool should be put in the heading. Blessings Rhiannon |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Tattie Bogle Date: 02 Nov 09 - 06:26 PM Given that Mudcat is a world-wide club are there nae bothies in Antarctica? Hi Leadfingers, it would be a long way South for me! |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Rasener Date: 02 Nov 09 - 06:32 PM Many times, mudcatters are visiting an area that is not familiar to them, and it helps if they know where the club is, just in case they want to pop in. Anyway its polite to say where you are. Unless of course you don't want to see people. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: nager Date: 03 Nov 09 - 04:54 AM We started up a folk club recently near Newcastle at a place just south of Cardiff. It is also just across the lake from Swansea. Toronto is three miles away to the south and Wallsend and Hexham are close by too. I am talking about Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia of course but it would have been fun to leave that out and imagine all the heads being scratched... |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: nager Date: 03 Nov 09 - 04:59 AM I should also have mentioned that if you are coming from the south take the scenic route and drive through Penrith, Londonderry and Richmond. If you take a wrong turning and arrive at Aberdeen, then tun back and go via Stroud!! |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Rasener Date: 03 Nov 09 - 05:10 AM LOL Another reason for maybe stating which country the thread is about. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Surreysinger Date: 03 Nov 09 - 06:32 AM Liked that, Nager.... and at the end of the day, having read all of the thread so far, I'm still left with one tentative fact -that someone's heard a rumour that a folk club MAY be starting in Formby at the RAFA ! LOL (but I do so agree that if you're going to post details, full details are what are needed). |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Aeola Date: 03 Nov 09 - 02:59 PM You're dead right and I was very remiss and do beg humble apology, however I really have enjoyed all the comments which just reinforces my initial belief that Folkies are a great crowd and that's why I enjoy all the Fests and Folk Clubs!!!!! |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Rasener Date: 03 Nov 09 - 03:02 PM :-) |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: foggers Date: 03 Nov 09 - 03:45 PM Tis a mistake easily made in this global on-line age. I accidently signed up for the wrong Freecycling group on-line cos I foolishly fogot to factor in the existence of more than one place called Chesterfield.... would have been interesting to arrange picking up unwanted goods though! Hope the new venture in Formby, Lancs, UK goes well! |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Herga Kitty Date: 03 Nov 09 - 07:01 PM Well, since Capo da Monty has mentioned plugs for the Sunray club, I might as well mention that Derek and I will be performing there in 23 days time... Kitty |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Tattie Bogle Date: 09 Nov 09 - 08:38 PM There's California very close to Falkirk in Scotland UK too! |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Leadfingers Date: 09 Nov 09 - 09:38 PM Moscow is near Kilmarnock ! And Egypt is just South of Beaconsfield as well as being near Fraserburgh and near Bradford |
