Best time I've had in while...Mick you shoulda stuck around, and I shoulda listened to ya! I did fall offa that stool that was on top of the chair that was on the table, coulda hurt myself 'cept I landed on my head.....Then Catspaw drug my dazed self out on the dancefloor, me kickin' and screamin' all the way. Thought I was doin' pretty good til somebody stepped on my hand.. 'Spaw, ya oughta bring them lovely ladies with ya next time so's we can dance with 'em.... Probably be a lot more pleasant to dance with somebody that ain't got 'possum-ass' breath!

Leej, doncha worry about it none...Harpgirl had a good idea, even if she won't admit it! In fact next time just put a little Mountain Dew in the Makers Mark....In fact set me up one now and, what the hell, make the next round on me.....I'll jusht finish up thish one and then woblle back to where them bean bags are...Whersh my banjer? Gotta play one for a nightcap...Whadda ya (burp) mean ish sheven clock inna mornin'? Wha happen' to the night? Lasht I 'member I wash climbin' on shomfin to git my bansher...

Aloha shirts? Did you say Aloha shirts? Oh baby. It has taken me a while to get here, and what a welcome. A place I can listen to my friends make music, maybe make a little myself and wear my aloha shirts without being harrassed? Sign me up. Float an umbrella in that Guinness, if you please, and park a Laphroaig next to it so it doesn't get lonely. Ol' Jake's at my feet. He'll do just about anything for an ice cube, it's his favorite material reward. I'll leave my bagpipes outside 'til things really get out of hand. -seed and Banjer, I've got a back up banjo in the car just in case you need one. How nice to be here. Anybody for a little singing? LEJ, better draw another Guinness for P.J. she'll probably be along soon. Now, check out this possum and hibiscus design...D.

bcc, I'm sorry I missed you! The time difference done us in, I expect. I brought Velma by for a glass of red wine and to meet all the friendly folk in the Tavern.

And Big Mick, that includes you! I'm certain that if bbc and Alison speak so kindly of you, you must be a fine fellow. You might be a bit jealous that a new man has come into the lives of those fine ladies, but hell, I've had to contend with that all my life! We can be friends! Just stay out of my way ***GRIN***

Hey, Doug, don't drink & run! I was just taking orders in the back room. I've got a jug of red reserved for Velma & a nice table to the side, w/ a cushion for her chair! I hope you're staying for the party! Don't mind Mick. He's a good guy; he just has this *thing* about alison. We both set him straight last night. Please stay & hear alison play her bodhran. Can I bring you some chips & salsa to go w/ that wine? What are you drinking, Doug?

Whew! Good to smell this clean air, even with Banj's slightly ripe breath and Spaw wavin' that damned possum around by the string. I just got back from the campfire, but the mosquitos were gettin' ferocious: a bunch of 'em had picked up Obi Wan Kinoffer and carried him right across the fire before he woke up and shook 'em off. He came back to earth off in the dark somewhere on top of some couple who'd "gone for a walk." Tlhey started screaming at him in Celtic. When he came back, he pulled out a goddamned cell phone and called the mosquito abatement hotline and they drove in upwind of the fire and started pumping some kind of poison our way. Anyway, that's when I decided to leave, so I came here for my health. Gimme another one of them Baba Braus, Leej--I need to breathe in some of them hops for a while 'til the insecticide stench is gone.

If you go to American city,
You will find it awfully pretty,
Just one thing of which you must beware:
Don't drink the water, and don't breathe the air.

Hey, anybody here play steel drums? I'd like to hear some calypso. Banjo doesn't really sound too bad, so long as we got three or four guitars...and PJ, dya think you can make that bodhran sound like bongos? Okay, here we go, ONEtwoTHREEfour---sixSEVENeight, "Haiti, cherie, means Haiti is my beloved land..."

Dave, if I have another of these Baba Braus, I could even tolerate your pipes playing calypso...aw, maybe not.

Evenin' Catters! How d'you like my costume? With the aloha shirt and giant moustache, I even fooled the computer into thinking I'm Dave Swan!

It's ME guys, PJ!! The system still won't let me post under my own name, so I've decided to relax and enjoy it. Besides, I figure if they can't tell me from Dave, there could be some advantages...

I'll finally hear the punch lines to all those jokes Fadac and Seed whisper out of my earshot at Quinns. Maybe people will think I'm smarter! When you're blonde they tend to spell stuff in front of you.

Spaw! You make a Jack and Coke like my daddy taught me to drink it! bbc, could you set me up with one of those?

SEED-O, SE-EE-EE-EED-0 SEED-0 COME AN' ME WAN' PLAY DRUM...

Could somebody tell me what Peter T. was doing at the door with his hands on the side of his face? And tell Rick if he'll help me roll Big Mick off the pool table, I've got my quarters down for a Kentucy 8...

Feels like comin' home (well, except for the cross-dressin part, this is kinda weird)...

Alison, maybe we can have a BABALOO bodhran line later?

Now where's that fireman hunk that just got off a 72 hour shift?

I'm dry and a little lonesome, folks. Think I'll take a Tullamore Dew straight up with a glass of water back and just sit and soak up the scenery for a while.

I had a great musical story happen today, but it doesn't involve traditional music. Anyone mind if I tell it?

I can hit some of those high harmonies. At least I think I can. Hey bbc- a Maker's Mark rocks for myself, if you'd be so kind.

Sorry, Barbara, Velma and I went over to the bar so we could catch the Diamondbacks Dodger's baseball game. We got all tied up over there watching our team cream the Dodgers and I didn't see you. The bartender was nice enough to fix me up with a vodka on the rocks and Velma has a nice glass of Burgandy.

Big Mick doesn't bother me. It's about time he got used to some competition! Since I'm probably old enough to be Alison's father, I'm sure he will rest much easier.

We're going to wander on back to the campfire. Velma's old bones can't stand a lot of the cold night air so the campfire will probably feel good to her.

From: WyoWoman

Oh, thanks LEJ. I hadn't realized that strap had slipped quite so far down.

Ok, so (sip) here's the deal (sip again):

I'm singing a gig August 16 as the "music" part of a "poetry and music" series being done at our local museum (it's just a venue, doesn't have anything to do with the music). This came up fairly suddenly, but I said, "What tha' heck. This is my chance to 'come out' in a fairly new town that doesn't know me as a singer."

So I said yes and have been busily trying to decide on two sets of music right quick. I decided to broaden the definition of "eclectic" and just do an evening of my favorite songs, which include everything from an acapella bluegrass tune ("Fly Away, LIttle Pretty Bird,") to Tom Lehrer's "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park." I'm doing four or five songs I did for a cabaret-type gig a few years back in New Mexico. BUT there's one song that is absolutely one of my favorites ("The LIes of Handsome Men," by Francesca Blumenthal) and I don't have sheet music for it. My friend back in New Mexico played it, I have the words, but no lead sheets. And the woman who's playing piano for me here doesn't play by ear.

So, heck. I want to sing that song. I call my pianist friend in New Mexico. He has all his music perfectly organized, except... his "L" file is missing. Hmmm.

SO, he says, you know, she lived in New York when I was there. You might just try calling her.

No dice.

So, I decided to go on the 'Net to see if I could find out anything about her. Bingo. About 20 articles about her -- and she's still around, still in New York. So, I figure, she must be registering her work with ASCAP, since she's a pro, right?

RIGHT!!! I called ASCAP in New York last Monday, and they, indeed, had the address of her publishing house. I wrote her in care of that address, told her about the gig and threw myself on her mercy, offering my Fedex number if she could possibly get me that music in time.

I've been bummed and, ok, I"ll admit it, a bit pissy all day today and wasn't even going to bother going out to the mailbox (I live in the country). But, I decided to run into town for a minute and stop by the mailbox on the way back.

You guessed it. It's there!!! I now have my music (in the key of B-flat, which isn't exactly my own, but, hey. I can pretend I'm an alto...), and she threw in a bonus song as well. WHAT A PRINCESS!!! I'm so thrilled.

I have to pay a few bucks for the music and credit her in my program. But I'm gonna sing that song, and that makes my repertoire complete, which makes me face this gig with a much more jubilant heart.

Here are the words. They are completely apropos to my life at this particular juncture:

I believe in star signs And I believe in film romances. I believe in fantasy And I believe with just one glance He's crazy for my eyes 'cause I believe the lies of handsome men.

I believe in witchcraft, And I believe in Cinderella. I believe in gypsies, And I believe I cast a spell That sends him to the skies, 'cause I believe the lies Of handsome men...

SOmewhere in a corner of my mind, I'm not a fool, completely cool. But even though he's hooked me on his line, I find the pleasure's been mine.

I believe in love songs, They seem to know just what I'm feeling. I believe Prince Charming, I never guess he's double-dealing. How my spirits rise, Believing in the lies Of handsome men.

Sometimes in a dark and quiet place, I meet the truth, face to face, And even if his Highness disappears, I keep some lovely souvenirs.

I believe in heroes And I expect that happy ending. Wishing on some rainbow, I pretend he's not pretending. Someday I"ll get wise, But right now, I need The lies of handsome men.

(sip, wipe the condensation off my glass. move the napkin around with my fingers. sip again. Stare off into the smoky cavern of the bar. Sip again)

WW

*grin* "...and lord I know I'm one..." (House of the Rising SON)

Hey, WW, do ya get the feeling that we're the only 2 girls awake in the Tavern at the end of the night? Everybody's curled up in corners and snoring on pool tables, and here we are talking about the Lies of Handsome Men and alcohol-induced tax deductions.

Great song, by the way, and great piece of detective work in tracking it down. I don't know where you are in the cycle of romance right now, but don't give up hope that a handsome man may tell you the truth one of these days. Took me a while but I found one. He's passed out with the spotted puppy next to the fireplace. Cute, ain't he? Both Dave and the dog smell kinda funny and get all excited when fire trucks go by, but I can count on them both to be straight with me. Keep the faith.

Ah, thanks, Peej. I'm feeling a bit ... mmm ... maybe just realistic. A dangerous thing, when it comes to entertaining thoughts of romance.

I appreciate the kind words, however. Think I'll meander on home now (sip). Looks like the party's kind of pooped out for a while.

"The party's over, It's time to call it a day..."

PJ- if Dave's been on a 72 hour shift, somehow I don't think a big wet kiss from the bartender is gonna make his day!

WW- you see there? Persistence pays off. Glad you got your music. Oh,and sorry to hear that some of us Handsome Men are liars.

And why may, I ask, is it that all the decent single women keep hooking up with jerks, while all the decent single men are mixed up with mankillers? One of life's great mysteries.

" A guy moved in to town
I ain't seen you around
I feel a brand new heart-ache coming on
You said we had a date
but you're three hours late
I fell a brand new heart-ache coming on
Why can't I trust in you?
Why do you try to make me blue the way you do?
You said we'd have a ball
Then you never call at all
I feel a brand new heart-ache coming on "

Ya know, LEJ, some of us pretty great single women ask that very question from time to time. I have no answer. But I don't categorize ALL men as liars and jerks. There are a few though, who do give y'all a bad name. (Just like, I'm sure, there are sufficient lyin,' cheatin' gals to give the rest of us some pretty bad p.r. as well.

This being human stuff is hard work!

I hope I had a good time last night. I don't remember any of it. I hope Bill D. Rick and I kept decent time for Alison. I do notice I have my 12 string back. I don't know how. My apologies to Rick and Mick, both of whom were accused of possession. I'm just so happy to have it back.

I thought I was at a sing with my friends here. A strange night. Usually these things start around 4 PM. I had to work so I didn't get there until 5 PM. No one there but Will, the host. After an hour of chat, I broke out my 6 string and played a few songs. One was that Civil War one I asked about a month or so ago. Will liked it. Laura showed up about 7:30 and we sang a few.

Then Randy and Sandy and their two kids came in. I hadn't seen them in a year. It is amazing to watch children grow up from a distance. They are young adults now, no longer just kids.

We moved outside after Will built a campfire and sang some more. A few people seemed to just ghost in and ghost out. About 11 PM it was time for me to call it quits. Fingers were sore and I was half asleep and I had a 30 mile drive ahead of me.

A pleasant, easy evening.

I just hope I played in tune at the Mudcat Tavern. I like the place and I was hoping LEJ would ask me back again (with perhaps a little more notice). I guess I was virtually in tune which should be close enough for folk music.

GOOD DAY, SIR!! (lowers voice) oh, sorry, good day. Names Tegucigalpa, Tyrone T. Mother had a hankering for the far side of the Rio G. Nice place you got here. Now that its got a little quiet here, I couldn't help noticing that there are pools of what look like tears on your bartop. Occupational hazard, I know. Well, I have just the solution for you. The wonder of the age!! (opens batteredsuitcase, pulls out combination juke box, pipe organ, and dispenser) You know how people say they are better for a good cry. Well, here it is -- my SAD-O-METRIC exerciser!! (places it on bartop). You wouldn't have a quarter, Mr., Mr.? LEJ, Mr. LEJ, nice to meet you! Well, I'll provide my own quarter. (inserts quarter into machine). The SADOMETRIC Exerciser provides for all your crying needs. (machine whirrs. Mechanical hand pops out wad of Kleenex) For the tears, you see! (machine whirrs. Drawer opens, picture of favourite dog appears. Mechanical hand reaches into pocket of machine, pulls out gun, shoots picture of dog). Just to get you in the mood, you see! But here is the main feature (Tyrone reaches over and indicates large dial). This is the sadness dial! It goes all the way from 0 to Hank Williams! (Jerks dial up almost to top. Machine begins to play George Jones' "These Days (I Barely Get By)" --
"Put my only two dollars on my favourite horse, he lost by a nose and died crying! Oh my boss says come winter we'll all be laid off, these days I barely get by!!" --
(machine breaks down in tears, weeps to a stop). Hmm. still a bug or two. Anyway, it works wonderfully as long as you don't go past 7 on the dial!!
Well, what do you think? Why are you looking at me that way? What do you mean, you only do live music? Is this some commie place? Allright, allright, don't push, hey, watch the machine -- that's Technology, the American Way you're mishandling, watch it buddy - Hey, nice shirt, buddy, ALOH-- (door slams ).

(voice from floor). Oh, yeah, forgot. Judy Holliday, the best ever, from "Bells Are Ringing", song by Comden and Green, tune by Jule Styne:

The party's over
It's time to call it a day
They've burst your pretty balloon
And taken the moon away
It's time to wind up the masquerade
Just make your mind up
the piper must be paid

The party's over
The candles flicker and dim
You danced and dreamed through the night
It seemed to be right just being with him
Now you must wake up, all dreams must end
Take off your makeup, the party's over
It's all over, my friend
It's all over, my friend.

She does get the guy, though, and he gets her. That's why they call it theatre!!
yours, Peter T.

Peter that is such a crass attempt at inserting music into what is otherwise a piece of complete BS, no matter how inspired or how hard I'm laughing. This will be analyzed and may be held against you.

OK, I've done my token yanking of buttercups from my poor garden and did a token vacuuming of my very messy house, and I'm back for a short spell!

Could we maybe bring that fantasy song circle over from another thread, and do, say, "Roseville Fair?"

(I'll just fetch a T&T while we're getting arranged in a circle...)

Hi, ladies! It's been such a quiet day in here that I was just about to suggest to Lonesome that he & *I* sit down & have a drink together! Here's your T & T, MAG. I'll be glad to sing along on "Roseville Fair."

Usually long before now in a song circle, I'll have insisted we do a round, just for practice. (I've actually got enough people in my song circle to know "To the greenwood" well enough that we can sing it.)

Here's a little WA State ditty;

apple maggot/ travel quarantine / do not transport/homegrown fruit

Tune is simple: descending scale in (any) major, until the last part jumps down a fourth on "homegrown," back up a fourth on "fruit"

accent on ap/mag/trav/quar/do/trans/home/fruit

ready?? OK, we need a section leader for each of 4 parts ... do we have 4 people?? YES,

Lonesome, you & I may need to look for a new line of work, if business stays this light for long. Think we should mention it to Bert, before he commits to the real thing? What do you say, boss? Chips & salsa in the back?

Hey, Den--did you ever get over to the campfire to hear me tell the story of the Kilkeel fishermen? What time is it now in Nova Scotia--midnight or one a.m.? Don't tell me you've already gone to bed--hell, has the sun even set up there?

And Kat and Jenny, you guys sure seem to attract the spirits...in addition to the fish tale, there was another ghost story my grandfather used to tell. I'll have to see if I can put it together again.

Hey, bbc--I'm just drinkin' coke tonight. Two nights in a row on Baba Brau have me bouncing off the walls. It's every bit as strong as I remembered. I'm gonna go try and play and sing "Abilene" if my hands will stop shakin'. Banjer, Rick, RiB, ya' wanna back me up? I do it in C (D if Ii'm feelin' adventurous). Harpy, c'mon up here if you brought along a diatonic.

It goes

C---/E7---/F---/Cdim---/A7---/D7---/G7---/C-C7-/F-Fm-/C-G7-/ amd back to C. If you donn't have the diminished, play a D7 instead.

Y'all know the first verse and the chorus, and the second verse, except I end it kind of different:

I stand by my window every night,
Watchin' those trains roll outa sight,
Wish I may and wish I might
Ride one back to Abilene.

and I add a coupl'of verses of my own--

I came to this city but I can't remember why,
Been scratchin' to survive as the years go by,
Just hope someday before I die, I make it back to Abilene.

and

I get so lonesome I lose my way,
If I can't find the road there'll be hell to pay,
Gotta make it on home someday,
To Abilene, my Abilene.

Hey, Spaw, wanna take a break on that possum? And Mick and PJ, bring them bodhrans up--jus' don't play 'em too loud. Okay, everybody, I'll take the first break: hey, that's some pretty backup playin there. If ya got it, Banj, take a break. Now some harmony on the chorus:

Abilene, Abilene,
Prettiest town I ever seen,
People there don't treat you mean,
In Abilene, my Abilene.
Your break, Rick. Hey, that's purty. RiB?

Okay, first verse:

Crowded city, there ain't nothin' free,
Nothin' in this crowd for me,
Wish to God that I could be
In Abilene, my Abilene. Mick, PJ, let's hear you a bit more in the choruses. Ah, sweet. Harpy, your break, then you, Spaw. Then we'll start the breaks all over after the second verse and chorus...hey, do I hear a fiddle--and a mandolin? Get up here and take a break together, now!...Banjer, you take the next break and I'm gonna blow a bit of harp along with you, then it's yours, Spaw, blow that possum butt, boy. Guitars after the third verse and chorus, and Harpy, take us home after the fourth verse and chorus. Oh, so fine.

Just dropped in to see if anyone was waiting to see if I was going to stand my round after my visit to the races on Saturday. Sorry, I only had one win, no overall profit, nor did any of our 17-strong party, even the luck of the Irish deserted the 4-strong Irish contingent. Socially a success: SHE made lemon jello salad this year and our Mexican brought home-made guacamole. As the night wore on the malt whisky took a pasting but they left the Metaxas to me (in fact, made some unkind comments about it!) which suited me. A pantomime horse race was billed for the Sunday Charity Fun Race Day, I think some of them ran on the Saturday by mistake! Now about half the group want to come again for the Ascot Festival meeting in September, I don't know if it is the racing, the "crack" or the hospitality that is the attraction. Maybe it is the jello salad! Well, all that talking has made me thirsty so if I can catch the bartender's eye...
