The Ray Mears/Yana Mangi interview is on a YouTube clip. Scroll down on the Myspace page.

I saw Mari Boine when WOMAD ran festivals in Morecambe a few years back. Powerful stuff.

Ray Mears' Bushcraft Survival series on UK TV featured one programme where he interviewed singer Yana, where she sang short samples of the "joik" style and explained her interpretation. DVD available here .

open mike, I think the apostrophe is just a poor man's rendition of S쳌«¡mi.

Volumes 21-23 of the CD series Musica Sveciae / Folk Music in Sweden is a 3 CD set Joik: En presentation av samisk folkmusic / Yoik: A Presentation of Saami Folk Music (Caprice CAP 21544, 1997) with field recordings from 1953 and 1954. It is accompanied by a 300+ pages book with the same title by Matts Arnberg, Israel Ruong and H쳌«©kan Unsgaard. The book seems to have been previously published in 1969; I don't know if there were LPs anvailable then too.

The Sami/Saami are also established in Russia (Kola Peninsula).

I never saw it written with apostrophes
here is a Sami (or Saami) magazine, Baiki
http://www.baiki.org/content/links.htm

and two musicians from that culture are
Mari Boine--http://www.mariboine.no/
and Vimme--http://www.rockadillo.fi/wimme/
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=112041165267

here is another thread on Sami culture
http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=110280&messages=27

it is a misnomer to say Saami is just in norway,
as they are from a nomadic background, and their
territory stretches across Norway Sweden and Finland.

I agree and just moved it, Roope. This will be a fav. of mine to check as I have really been interested for a number of years.

In THIS THREAD there are some links to fantastic videos about the Sa'ami, including a six-part series on youtube about joiks.

I only now of it through TV documentaries I've seen here in England (herding reindeer, the unaccompanied songs/yoik), although I have been quite far north in Sweden...

Poem 14 of 230: NIGHT OR DAY?!

In the far north of Sweden,
A "Land of the Midnight Sun,"
A strange thing chanced upon me -
And I'll tell you, just for fun.

Got off a train late-morning
(Had to catch same one next day)
And trudged far to the Youth Hostel -
    Paying for a one-night stay.

I spent the afternoon sightseeing,
    Then, after a latish dinner,
Returned to my own small bedroom -
The comfy bed proving a winner.

For I soon dozed into dreamy sleep -
    Waking what was just two hours hence;
But my watch was an analogue,
And night or day I couldn't sense!

I quickly packed all my things
(My train an hour or thirteen on)
And hurried out the bedroom -
The bright sky a sneaky con.

I wandered down the track a bit
    (The Hostel office empty),
Before a smiling helpful local
    Did kindly enlighten me.

Don't delete this one Joe. The Saami- known to us as Lapps, though that's an insult- do a great line in songs called joik (pron. yoik)- a song which is personal to the owner, very much an attribute, and which you shouldn't sing without their permisiion. Highly compressed local references and a lot of mouth music, and I think the tunes would often work very well on Highland bagpipes.
