The monthly shanty/forebitter/ballad session will be starting at 3:30 on 21 November at the Press Room in Portsmouth NH and ending at 7:30 PM.

We know that some of the regulars are planning on attending the Seamus Kennedy House Concert Chez Sinsull that evening, but please try to come by on your way North as I have to get some input about future events/doings, etc.

Thanks - Tom

Eventually I will have enough reward points to fly up that way and impose on some one's hospitality to make a cameo appearance at one of the legendary Press Room sessions. (and probably a silent cameo, given the musicianship, scholarship and talent of the regulars there.)

I look forward to that day.

How can you keep from singing?

Janie - there is always a warm bed, a hot meal and a glass of whatever pleases you here in Maine.

I am sorry not to make this one. Keep me in the loop though.
Mary

I wish. I'll have enough trouble getting from the Belfast session to Sinsull's.

Someday...

Looks as if it will be a smaller session than usual.

Well, more songs to lead for those of us who are going.

If Lynn Noel turns up, could someone please give her a hug from us! We didn't get to say goodbye at the end of the PMFF and I've been trying to find an email addy for her ever since!

Love & Hugs to all at the Press Room,
Hil & Richard x

We will certainly not be wanting for singers. Paul Schurr arrived from Albany last night. Other definites include Barbara, Bruce, Mark, Chris, Marty, and Pete Hale. Jeri's planning to come by on the way to South Portland, as I hope Peter and Joanne will be doing, and we're expecting to see Justine.

See you this afternoon - Tom

It was a really nice session -- and, though I know a lot of the principals aren't home yet (spending the night in Portsmouth or going on to the Seamus Kennedy house concert at Sinsull's), I don't have time before heading to work to give a synopsis.

Later! (I promise.)

Linn

Sinsull et al-

Yes, Justine was there and even led a couple of songs, "My Own Dainty Davy" and "Here's Health to the Company." It was really nice that she could be there to share the session.

There was a good turnout, at least a dozen folks were leading songs. Tom was there playing concertina. Judy was taking the notes but we have missed some of the earlier songs in the session.

Mark: First song?, Turning Toward the Morning, Grey Funnel Line, Glorious Ale, Battle at Sea?

Charlie: Bound Away (Bill Adams), Press Room's Extra Voice, Mobile Bay, Outside Track, High Tide at 4 AM, Mid-Watches

Paul: Cushie Butterfield, Bully in The Alley, Swabbing Monolog, Frozen in Frobiser Bay, English Ale, Bless "Em All

Chris: Barrett's Privateers, Home Dearie Home, Bell Bottom Trousers, Fiddler's Green, Alabama John Cherokee

Jeri: Blackbird Get-Up

Bruce: Roller Bowler, Nova Scotia Farewell, Northwest Passage, Willie Taylor, Jamestown Homeward Bound, London Julie, Sailor's Prayer

Marty: Shallow Brown, Rose of Allendale, Once More a-Lumbering Go, Lovely Nancy

Alexander: Song for Barry, Rolling Down the Bay to Juliana, Ship Finally in Hand?,

Steve: Venezuela to Trinidad (might have been someone else leading this one)

Linn: Robin Adair (Race of Long Ago), Broomhall Bay?, Shanty in Old Shantytown, Keelboatman(?)

Jeff: Road to Mandalay, Row On

Judy: Outward Bound (C. Fox Smith), Roll the Old Chariot

Ray: Greenland Whales

Peter: Thanksgiving Round, Martin Gray

Cheerily,
Charley Noble and JudyB

Linn & Tom did 'Since I Married a Keelman' (or whatever the correct title is) too. I left when the Chariot was rolling, and it looked like the session was just going to keep getting better.

Jeri-

Yes, I wasn't sure of the correct title to Linn's song either. I've just looked it up in Danny & Joyce McLeod's CD Never a Cross Word, © 2002. The correct title is "The Sandgate Girl's Lamentation," a traditional song which was found in Bell's "Northern Bards" published in 1812.

We had a nice dinner with Paul at the Library Restaurant afterwards.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Actually, "Sandgate Girl's Lament" -- I do an amalgamated version from Betty and Norman MacDonald and the High Level Ranters, and then got that extra line in the first verse (repeated at the end) from Danny & Joyce McLeod (in person, before they recorded that CD and not long after I originally learned the song).

I wrote down what was being sung (since bringing a recorder was "one more thing" and I just couldn't deal with it right now.

Besides "Sandgate", I did "Race of Long Ago", Jerry Bryant's little parody "Only a Shanty In Old Shanty Town", and "Astoria's Bar" (for Paul who wanted to hear it again; I'd sung it Friday night). I had attempted Tom Lewis's "Sailor's Prayer" earlier, but my voice had suddenly rebelled for some stupid reason. I think it went for a walk and didn't tell me.

Mark kicked off the session with "Rolling Home". His later song was "The Cumberland" (or something like that).

Chris Maden's "Home, Dearie, Home" is actually "Ambletown", I think. Same story slightly differently told.

Thanks for clearing up who sang what.

Where is "Astoria's Bar" from? It's a lovely song.

Charley Noble

That's one of Mary Garvey's excellent songs, Charley. I sure hope we get her back from La Belle Canada.
