Subject: RE: Nov. Shanty Session @ the Press Rm.(NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 23 Nov 09 - 05:37 PM Linn- Thanks for clearing up who sang what. Where is "Astoria's Bar" from? It's a lovely song. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Nov. Shanty Session @ the Press Rm.(NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 23 Nov 09 - 04:58 PM Actually, "Sandgate Girl's Lament" -- I do an amalgamated version from Betty and Norman MacDonald and the High Level Ranters, and then got that extra line in the first verse (repeated at the end) from Danny & Joyce McLeod (in person, before they recorded that CD and not long after I originally learned the song). I wrote down what was being sung (since bringing a recorder was "one more thing" and I just couldn't deal with it right now. Besides "Sandgate", I did "Race of Long Ago", Jerry Bryant's little parody "Only a Shanty In Old Shanty Town", and "Astoria's Bar" (for Paul who wanted to hear it again; I'd sung it Friday night). I had attempted Tom Lewis's "Sailor's Prayer" earlier, but my voice had suddenly rebelled for some stupid reason. I think it went for a walk and didn't tell me. Mark kicked off the session with "Rolling Home". His later song was "The Cumberland" (or something like that). Chris Maden's "Home, Dearie, Home" is actually "Ambletown", I think. Same story slightly differently told. Linn |
Subject: RE: Nov. Shanty Session @ the Press Rm.(NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 23 Nov 09 - 11:45 AM Jeri- Yes, I wasn't sure of the correct title to Linn's song either. I've just looked it up in Danny & Joyce McLeod's CD Never a Cross Word, © 2002. The correct title is "The Sandgate Girl's Lamentation," a traditional song which was found in Bell's "Northern Bards" published in 1812. We had a nice dinner with Paul at the Library Restaurant afterwards. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Nov. Shanty Session @ the Press Rm.(NH) From: Jeri Date: 23 Nov 09 - 11:00 AM Linn & Tom did 'Since I Married a Keelman' (or whatever the correct title is) too. I left when the Chariot was rolling, and it looked like the session was just going to keep getting better. |

Subject: RE: Nov. Shanty Session @ the Press Rm.(NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 22 Nov 09 - 10:28 AM It was a really nice session -- and, though I know a lot of the principals aren't home yet (spending the night in Portsmouth or going on to the Seamus Kennedy house concert at Sinsull's), I don't have time before heading to work to give a synopsis. Later! (I promise.) Linn |

Jeri's planning to come by on the way to South Portland, as I hope Peter and Joanne will be doing, and we're expecting to see Justine. See you this afternoon - Tom |

Subject: RE: Nov. Shanty Session @ the Press Rm.(NH) From: Janie Date: 15 Nov 09 - 10:10 PM Eventually I will have enough reward points to fly up that way and impose on some one's hospitality to make a cameo appearance at one of the legendary Press Room sessions. (and probably a silent cameo, given the musicianship, scholarship and talent of the regulars there.) I look forward to that day. |
Subject: RE: Nov. Shanty Session @ the Press Rm.(NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 15 Nov 09 - 09:54 PM Judy and I will be there for sure. Charley Noble |
Subject: Nov. Shanty Session @ the Press Rm.(NH) From: curmudgeon Date: 15 Nov 09 - 08:48 PM The monthly shanty/forebitter/ballad session will be starting at 3:30 on 21 November at the Press Room in Portsmouth NH and ending at 7:30 PM. We know that some of the regulars are planning on attending the Seamus Kennedy House Concert Chez Sinsull that evening, but please try to come by on your way North as I have to get some input about future events/doings, etc. Thanks - Tom |
