Hi,

This is just a spin-off above the line from this thread BS: Floods UK: All ok?:

Hi,
Crow Sister

> "I live right on the top of a hill... There's a dreadful puddle outside my front gate though."

Don't say things like that. It does no good for my headache to have a song bursting out. (Plus, next thing you know, they're going to ask me to write out the tune.)

At the Top of a Hill (Mysha: Peter Hans van den Muijzenberg)

Our family lives inside a mill
We all live together at the top of a hill
(It's) High and dry and the view is great
But there's a dreadful puddle outside our gate

Sometimes in winter, when the rain really pours,
A clowder of cats comes to our doors,

Our family lives inside a mill
With the cats, [meeauw]
We all live together at the top of a hill
It's high and dry and the view is great
But there's a dreadful puddle outside our gate

Sometimes, in winter, when the rain really pours,
A pack of dogs comes to our doors,

Our family lives inside a mill
With the dogs, [ruff] [ruff],
and the cats, [meeauw],
We all live together at the top of a hill
It's high and dry and the view is great
But there's a dreadful puddle outside our gate

Etc.
flock of sheep [meeeh]
drift of pigs [gnor] [gnor]
kine of cows [mooo]
herd of horses [nihihihi]
dole of doves [rookookoo]

Sometime in spring when the weather is dry,
It's time for us to say
[goodbye]
[rookookoo]
[nihihihi]
[mooo]
[gnor] [gnor]
[meeeh]
[ruff][ruff]
[meeauw]

Our family lives inside a mill
We all live together at the top of a hill
(It's) High and dry and the view is great
But there's a dreadul puddle outside our gate

Obviously, a horde of hamsters, a husk of hares, a wisdom of owls, etc. will fit in as well, as long as you happen to know what sound they make. And for the more adventurous the same goes for the pod of porpoises, parcel of penguins, parade of elephants, the float of crocodiles, tower of giraffes, and flight of dragons ([woosh]?).

(Feel free to post the correct ways to write down animals noises in English; that's something I'm not overly familiar with.)

Bye,
                                                                Mysha

Why, gosh - thank you Mysha (Peter), quite an honour! I don't happen to live *in* a (wind)mill myself - though incidentally there is a (water)mill at the bottom of the hill, which inevitably floods every time there's abundant rainfall.

My pond is looking perilously full at the moment though, do hope the goldfish aren't planning an escape!

Do I happen to sort of know you from anywhere ?

Hi,

Thanks, MGAS.

Crow Sister, we may have read each other before on Mudcat, but that's probably it.

A water mill flooding? Wasn't excess water supposed to pass by the water mill? Or is the entire valley flooding?

Wow, goldfish; I didn't think of fish! If they do escape:
After all land mammals have come plodding through the water, you could have:
glint of goldfish

Reading back:
- Depending on what side of the big puddle you live on, you might sing "our family live" and "come to our doors", plural.
- 'dreadul' is usually spelt with an 'f'.

Bye,
                                                                Mysha

Hi,

Oops. What I wrote, using angled brackets, was that the goldfish would say [blub], except that stuff inside angled brackets doesn't show in web-chat like Mudcat. But it could actually work very well to have them say nothing, provided they are not the last animals. (The pause would not work in the goodbyes if they were.)

OK, headache almost over; I'm now one by one searching tones on my guitar.

Bye,
                                                                  Mysha
