Subject: RE: Obit: Richard Todd From: GUEST,Chris B (Born Again Scouser) Date: 04 Dec 09 - 07:26 AM What a shame. And only a few months before the new 'Dambusters' film was due to come out. I'll refrain from the obvious.... |

Subject: RE: Obit: Richard Todd From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 04 Dec 09 - 07:51 AM Richard often played war heroes but wasn't he actually in the thick of it in real life? He's definitely part of my 1950s cinema going experiences. He did some period action stuff too: Robin Hood, Rob Roy and all that. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Richard Todd From: Crane Driver Date: 04 Dec 09 - 08:06 AM Yes, Richard was in the Parachute forces during the war - he actually took part in the D-Day assaults that he later recreated in 'The Longest Day'. Not the Pegasus Bridge attack, but the associated parachute landings to the east of the beaches. So he knew what it was really like to be there. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Richard Todd From: Will Fly Date: 04 Dec 09 - 08:53 AM I always remember him in a film with Peter Sellers (who played a vicious thug) called "Never Let Go". Great actor - RIP. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Richard Todd From: GUEST,Falco Date: 04 Dec 09 - 09:05 AM I thought his best film was "A man called Peter". He was Irish, born in Dublin. The poor man had a heavy heart, Two of his son's Seamus and Peter committed suicide. It's sad day, but it was a full life. R.I.P. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Richard Todd From: Genie Date: 05 Dec 09 - 01:59 AM Gosh, I had such a crush on Richard Todd when I was - what? about 12? - when he played Robin Hood opposite Glyneth Johns as Maid Marian in a movie. Odd convergence, too - I just googled him a day or two ago, when I was thinking of my favorite British actors, Glad he lived a long and, I hope, happy life. Rest in peace, Mr. Todd G |

Subject: RE: Obit: actor Richard Todd (Dec 2009) From: bubblyrat Date: 05 Dec 09 - 05:54 PM According to his obituary in The Times today, he DID,in fact, see action at the Pegasus Bridge, thus giving great significance to his portrayal of Major Howard's capture & defence of that bridge in 1944,in one his best films, "The Longest Day". His performance in "The Dambusters" was memorable. There may well be a "remake", but I imagine Wing Commander Gibson's dog ( and the call-sign for success in the Operation) have different names in these politically correct times-----poor old Richard Todd; he's well out of it ,if you ask me. |
Subject: RE: Obit: actor Richard Todd (Dec 2009) From: DougR Date: 05 Dec 09 - 06:21 PM I enjoyed his performances very much. Sorry he's gone. DougR |

Subject: RE: Obit: actor Richard Todd (Dec 2009) From: Ref Date: 06 Dec 09 - 08:38 AM I read that he had served under John Howard's command at Pegasus Bridge ina couple of different sources. |
Subject: RE: Obit: actor Richard Todd (Dec 2009) From: Dave Hanson Date: 06 Dec 09 - 09:13 AM He did indeed and he played Howard in the film ' The Longest Day ' and had to talk to himself. Dave H |
Subject: RE: Obit: actor Richard Todd (Dec 2009) From: Edthefolkie Date: 06 Dec 09 - 09:15 AM Re the Disney "Robin Hood", Maid Marian was actually played by Joan Rice. I know because I got the book of the film as a school prize when I was 6. Still got it. And how old did I feel when I found another copy in a museum display a few years ago? I don't think Mr Todd was really a tights type of person, but I will always revere him for his portrait of Gibson in The Dam Busters. I wouldn't have wanted to get the wrong side of Gibson and the same applies to Richard Todd. One of the old school - RIP. |
Subject: RE: Obit: actor Richard Todd (Dec 2009) From: bill\sables Date: 06 Dec 09 - 07:30 PM I worked with Richard Todd in the 70s on a childrens seriel called "Boy Dominic" for Yorkshire TV. It was a tale about a boy who discovered the healing waters at Boston Spa Yorkshire, Richard Todd played Dominic's father, a sea captain and his mother was played by Hildergard Neil. Richard Todd was, at the time, a very big name in the acting world and a more pleasant man you could never wish to meet, He was very professional but also very approachable. He will be sadly missed. Bill |
Subject: RE: Obit: actor Richard Todd (Dec 2009) From: Genie Date: 06 Dec 09 - 07:56 PM Ed, you are right, of course. It was in the movie "The Sword And The Rose" that Glynis Johns co-starred (as Mary Tudor) with Richard Todd. I loved both those movies. |
Subject: RE: Obit: actor Richard Todd (Dec 2009) From: Genie Date: 06 Dec 09 - 08:26 PM And the other movie I was trying to think of where Richard Todd and Glynis Johns were paired opposite each other was Disney's "Rob Roy". They teamed up for at least one other flic in the '50s, "Flesh And Blood," but I didn't see that one. I do remember seeing previews for a little later Richard Todd movie that, at the time, seemed a bit on the racy side (at least by the previews). (Today it would seem quite mild.) It was titled "Don't Bother To Knock," and Todd played a womanizer. |
