FIFA should change the rule such that managers can only manage their OWN nation - if managers are not important to the COMPETITION, why are foreign managers employed?! And, as I've said in verse, club football should be regulated back to how it was - mostly locals in MEANINGFUL competition.

Bobby Brown's first match as manager was against the newly crowned world champions England at Wembley Stadium. Despite being underdogs, Scotland won 3–2 thanks to goals from Denis Law, Bobby Lennox and Jim McCalliog. Having defeated the world champions on their own turf, the Scotland fans hailed their team as the "unofficial world champions".......and we were there!

Ake I was working in London then and was at Wembley that day, Jim Baxter give an exhibition at half back for the Scots, Scotland would have beaten England by a far bigger margin if they had concentrated on the game instead of relying on `fancy-dan` football. They were by far the better side, Dennis Law when he scored gave the longest high-fist salute I have ever seen.
Bye the way I wasn`t on the field after the game taking part in tearing the goal posts down, many a Wembley souvenir finished up in Scotland that year.

"Scotland tested against the England 66 side"

Scotland didn't qualify as they were pipped by the Italians in their group - but of course to be fair England didn't actually qualify either. The teams were of course tested against each other on an annual basis and during that time period the Scots actually had a good record against England. England beat Scotland 4-3 in 1966 but that was a run of only one win out of 8 meetings. After the Scottish disaster in 61 the Scots won in 1962, 1963, 1964, 1967 and there were draws in 1965,1968 and 1969. We all know that both have underachieved. As one of the major footballing nations England should have won more than one trophy and of course they have never won anything outside of England. Scotland for a while had a good record at qualifying but then have never progressed further. Sometimes falling on their faces - at other times being desperately unfortunate. Scotland were the top team in football for decades but unfortunately there will be no-one alive who can actually remember it as it was a looong time ago :-)

"Why are Scots not coming through"

That is a great question. The conveyor belt has simply stopped. The Scottish side used to be known for its flair but now they try to stifle the opposition simply because the homegrown talent isn't there. And at that one of true potential superstars we have decided to play for Ireland instead. I imagine if there was a World Cup in computer games we may do well.

The population of England should leave the rest of the UK well behind, 51 million in England compared to 5 million Scots, one trophy win in 1966 by this massively populated country. In the sporting world with comparative populations England are well behind the rest of continental Europe,

at lest we won the Homeless World Cup and a Scots lady helped Itlay the win the women's world cup and she is from Ayrshire the same county as me, anyway the reason why England won the world cup was every other team had to play at different statidems but England only had to play at Wembley, at Lest Scotland qulified 8 times in a row and we gor a cup for that because We are just a small nation, anyway I just hate Football because of the nutcases that follow it, and that includes Scotland, what about 1978 What happened to England then and in 1967 When Scotland beat the World champions 3-2 at Wembley, but unlike England we don't go on abut it, unlike 1966.

And my point is Terry Mac, 12 countries have won the European championship from its beginning,Greece, Denmark Portugal Holland Serbia, with very much smaller populations, and there may be the odd small nation I might have left out.
Not forgetting Germany [3], Italy and France, all winners.
England have yet to win this championship, surely this tells you that one solitary World Cup home win, way back in 1966 is a very poor return for a country that prides itself on being a sporting nation.
And yes Scotland`s 5 million more than held its own against England down the years.

Just thought.

Could it be that like England, they have imported so many foreigners, that the grass roots are being stifled.

Its one thing having one of the best leagues in the World, but when you look at all the foreigners in the English teams, it doesn't surprise me that even today, England are not good enough to win the World Cup or the European Cup.

So what chance do Scotland have.

Hamilton versus Hearts today had 14 different nationalities in the teams. The quality of these two teams leaves a lot to be desired, but what is worse, is if so many non local players are in the teams, what chance is there for Scottish players to come through.

The same goes for England.

Villan couldn't be more right. just an e.g. - I was an Arsenal supporter for over 70 years; but can't see any point at moment in giving loyalty to an entirely foreign team managed by a Frenchman; with one home-bred player [Walcott] included occasionally among regulars & he is off with injuries at present. My cousins can't see my point - but I know where I am coming from. Sooner the 6-5 rule comes in, the better. I know when i started supporting them, their mainstays were two Welshmen, Bryn Jones & Meredith, a Scot, Alex James, & a Cornishman, Bastin - so not exactly a 'local' team even in those days; but it wasn't the same somehow, was it?

Very good example there MtheGM.

I feel a bit better about the Villa as the team on Saturday consisted of quite a few UK players, namely

Luke Young
Stephen Warnock
Ashley Young
James Milner
Stewart Downing
Gabriel Agbonlahor
Emile Heskey

and of course

Richard Dunne of the Republic of Ireland.

This is what other teams should be striving to do, if we are ever going to improve the quality of our National teams.

I am not sure I go along with that way of thinking. When Manchester United first started winning titles again in the nineties, they had brought in Eric Cantona, who had previously been regarded as "unmanageable". However, his habit of practising after normal training was part of the reason that the skill levels of players like David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes rose to such heights. Ultimately it enriched the standards in the Premier League and in two of those cases, there was a knock on effect for England.
Going back to the Englad vs USA World Cup match, I think we can expect it to be close. The last time England played the USA in the finals, we lost. We also have to bear in mind that last year the USA beat Spain and nearly beat Brazil in a competition - something England have never even come close to doing. The Americans will be in SA before England and have more time to acclimatise and do altitude preparation. It is also a pipe dream for England to expect to have all their first choice players fully fit and available. It won't happen - there will be seven or eight at the best. We should still be able to beat the USA, but there will not be any room for mistakes.

I agree players like Cantona can help improve other players skills, but when your team consists maninly of foreigners, then you are limiting the chances of young local players ever getting into the first teams.
Opportunities are very limited for home grown players.

"This is what other teams should be striving to do, if we are ever going to improve the quality of our National teams."

Spot on Villan. The reason United were so good in the 1990's is because many of their young players came up from their youth training programme which nurtured their talent and turned them into excellent footballers.

Quite, Villan. One fine imported player, Alanabit, as you point out, can inspire a home-based team. But an entirely foreign team, managed by a foreigner, playing in a stadium named for a Middle-Eastern oil oligarchy; who could make a fine Earth XI to play Mars some time but have no connection with North London, or even England, or even GB, except that their oddly-named-for-the-area stadium just happens to be there [& not their traditional one, but a brand-new one, built, as name shows, mainly with foreign oil sponsorship], is surely a very different matter — to put it in Hegelian terms, so enormous a quantative difference as to establish an entire difference qualitatively.

You only have to look at Ajax of Amsterdam. I watched them for 13 years when I lived in Amsterdam.

They have one of the best policies on developing players from a very young age. They don't even stop at that, becuase these players follow their studies as well, supported by the club.

They have been doing this for so many years.

They groom them into the first team normally around the age of 16/17 and by the time they are 20/21 they are selling them to the big clubs around the world and making lots of dosh which pays back their investments.
When these players are just getting to an age in their 30's, they get the best ones back at the club. These players then with their wealth of experience help the youngsters to improve. Big example of that was Johan Cruyff.

I have a great admiration for Ajax

Real Madrid were not shy about using foreign players years before the English game was taken over by those outsiders whom I was told " wouldn`t stand up to the robust tackling and the cold winters", of course the puny foreigners brought the English game to a much higher level.
To get back to Real Madrid, the south American countries were supplying the Spanish side with great players remember the great Juan Schiffanio and Santamaria, [those two from memory], going back to their famous 5 European Cups in a row 1955-60.
Their 1960 7-3 win over Eintract Franfurt featured two of the worlds greatest Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas both greats shared the 7 goals between them, Spanish league football was never bettered. There is no harm bringing in class players, the English premier league may be between 4 or 5 top teams but it is good entertainment for the neutral football fan, as for Villa they will always be also-rans, O`Neill needs rich backers otherwise it is a mad scramble for the leftovers.

Too true. However, I don't mind too much if we keep bringing in young UK players. Villa's greatest requirement is an excellent young goalscoring centre foward. I like Carew very much, but he is a bit old and injury to him, can affect the Villa badly. Unfortunately Emile "The Donkey" Heskey, doesn't cut it at the Villa.
