No, Eric, I clicked on the vivid purple link in your post, the one that says 'Vintage Recording.' It's kind of hard to miss, particularly by someone like me who's been using computers since 1981.

However, my husband had been using my computer and had turned off the pop-off blocker. I'll have to remind him not to do that.

Tell me, how does one reveal the URL for something imbedded?

Guest, thanks for posting your observations on the age of the video. They are interesting.

When I clicked on the site, I could not hear the German song. I seemed to be hearing advertising of some kind. It was a little frantic. It may have been from the Chinese broadcast.

I was able to download 92 songs of the Comedian Harmonists last night.
"Their Greatest Hits on Electrola".
Now that I know the titles of the songs, it's very easy to find the lyrics on-line.

If you're interested, here's an example of how I typically use music in my films.
This film has been chosen to be part of an exhibition next spring at the Museum of Jewish Art & History in Paris.

Eric, if you liked that version of the song, you might like more of their songs; they did both versions of German schlagers and of internationally known songs. Though they always sang in German, there's such a pleasure in their songs that you don't need to understand the words to enjoy them. For example, try the well known melody of Wochenend Und Sonnenschein.

Leeneia, the site seems to insist on keeping the music alive. The first time I visited, I had to close the tab the music was started in; merely leaving the page didn't help. But it did go silent that way, so it is stoppable.

The link worked fine for multiple users as you can see from the other replies, and the song has been identified.

I am thankful for everyone's help, but a bit surprised at all of the initial suspicion to my posting. I'm not sure if it's warranted or welcoming....I'm a musician and a film maker, not an Internet pirate.

Hi,

The song is called "(Die) Dorfmusik", but it's also commonly know by the first line, being the first line of the chorus: Wenn am Sonntagabend die Dorfmusik spielt. The singers sound like the Comedian Harmonists. (I hesitate to say that it's really them as, like the video, the audio is lacking certain thirties characteristics. Either this is modern, or they did a really good job protecting this or cleaning it up.)

You can probably find both the schlager version and the Harmony version on the tube sites.

I work with vintage film on a daily basis, and I'm 100% positive that this is new footage made to look old. They even posted a video titled "vintage skiing test" and you can clearly see the shadow of the video cam as the cameraman skis down the mountain. Plus, there is someone in a neon red coat farther down the ski slope.
These guys collect vintage skiing equipment, and are trying to recreate the feel of an old film by adding filters and effects to the video.

French website- The gear is 1930s, the film is 1930s, as are others at the site, but the website is 2009 or was last modified this year.

I have heard the song but haven't known anyone from one of those singing groups for some time- a group used to gather at a German restaurant and bar here in Calgary.

Well, about all I can make out is something like "wenn die Katarina mir immer normal" (or "wenn die Katarina hier immer normal" or "immer noch mal," or both).
I think the date of 1939 seems right - those look like Gebirgsjäger uniforms from that era. I think the projector click is added for effect, but it sure makes the lyrics hard to hear. -Joe-

I admit that the url is long, and I had a feeling that might raise a few eyebrows.
I tried to upload an mp3 file that I could stream, but my server does not allow direct downloading. I will upload a copy of the video to youtube and post the link here as soon as it's up.

Betsy, The film is NOT old, and there is an email address for the film maker at the very end of the film.

The "following Orders" part has me concerned.
If there is something wrong with the lyrics for political/social reasons, could someone point me to a song with the same general sound and tempo? It doesn't matter to me if it's sung in German, Swiss or even Japanese, I just need a song with that particular feeling to it for a film I'm working on.

I'm not surprised you haven't heard from the film maker considering it was 1937. A little bit of German / European social history wouldn't go amiss when trying to track down anyone associated with it.
I doubt if anyone will own up to writing this - they will probably say they were only "following orders" .

It's a wonderful German/Bavarian vocal sung by a quartet with excellent harmony that just puts a huge smile on my face every time I hear it.

I've emailed the film maker, but have not heard back from him. :(

Anyone who can identify the recording or the name of the singing group automatically qualifies for hero status!

The film has been altered to look old, so I'm not sure if the song has been altered as well, but it sounds like an older 78 to me.
