Believe it or not, Mother Country has it's own thread. I think somebody (maybe Joe) included the chords.

Hi Guest!

The song actually modulates twice, and is thus in 3 different keys.

I play it starting in Bb, then it goes to C, then D.

The chords in G (with a modulation to A)--at least as I do it, which would be pretty close (although I haven't listened to the original for awhile) would be:

Some kind of love is like gold
G          D (F# bass)    Eminor

C          D          G
That is the hardest to hold

                   B            Em          C
For it catches the eye of each thief passing by

G    D                   E      D
Some kind of love is like gold

(same chords as 1st verse)

Some kind of love comes too soon
That kind of love heals your wounds
When your wounds are all healed, and your back on your wheels
You say that kind of love came too soone

Chorus
E                   Bm
Some kind of love, some kind of love
C          G             A            D
Everyone's searching for some kind of love
E                  Bm
Some kind of love, some kind of love
C          G             D            G    Bm (F# bass) E E7
Everyone's searching for some kind of love

A...(repeat next verse in A).   Same chord progression but one tone up.

Hope that helps.

If some of those chords aren't exact, I've little doubt somebody will correct me.   Mudcat's a great forum.

I'm new to Mudcat.
I'm an ear player (harmonica or tin whistle) and singer. But I sometimes use accompanists who are more comfortable with the proper chords, rather than trying to figure them out from my singing. Would some knowlegable guitar player please send me the chords, in D, for "Some Kind of Love"
Either post them here, or send them to my email address. Which is:
dewunsch@ieee.org . Or snail mail to D. E. Wunsch, 6235 Prospect Road, San Jose, CA, 95129. Thanks, Dave W.

I used to do "Belly Full of Tennessee"... I think John wrote it but it's been so long I wouldn't swear to it... Also used to "Shoot All the Wild Horses" when I had alot of folks singing... Again, it''s been 30 years since those days...

Interesting! In my early university years I started learning guitar and playing in a duo w. a friend (David Ragosin) just to popularize those great John Stewart songs I heard on California Bloodlines and Signals Through the Glass. We learned all the lyrics to Mother Country (and there's a of of them).

I still will sing California Bloodlines, July You're a Woman, Never Going' back to Nashville, Missouri Birds, Draft Age, Oldest Living Son (one of his best!), Willard, The Road Shines Bright, Daydream Believer, You Can't Go Back to Kansas, Armstrong, Chilly Winds, Wind Dies Down (Circle the Sun), and who knows how many more.

Eric, I, just this week, recalled "Josie" from my memory banks. Always loved it, hadn't played it in years. Mike

Mike

I've just seen this thread. If you are not already there then join bloodlines [just search it]. If you ask your question there you may get a deluge of answers [as well as a large set of lyrics and chords]. I play "Josie", "Walk on the moon", "Some kind of love" "Botswanna", Lost her in the sun" and 18 wheels" when I get the time [only another 500+ to learn].

Here are a few great "John Stewart songs" that he didn't write. From his Kingston Trio Days:

Reverend Mr. Black ~ Jerry Leiber / Mike Stoller / Billy Edd Wheeler

Desert Pete ~ Billy Edd Wheeler

Long Time Blues ~ Mason Williams

The Summer's Long ~ Rod McKuen

Rusting in the Rain ~ Rod McKuen

Allen, the song you refer to is "Midnight wind", from one of the seventies Buckingham/ Nicks collaborations. I always loved his voice, taste, er?. Never understood why "Fire in the Wind" or "eighteen Wheels" weren't more succesful. Mike

I stopped listening to the Kingston Trio when JS came on board. I couldn't bear to listen to his billy-goat vibrato. He seemed to be a good enough instrumentalist and songwriter; but I just couldn't take his voice. Some folks may recall his almost-a-hit, a song about a woman named Miranda or Melinda or something like that. I thought it was only in keeping with his irritating vocal style that someone who sounded a lot like Stevie Nicks, who also has that billy-goat vibrato, backed him up on it.

That said, I very much liked the song he wrote the day after Kennedy was shot:

I know I'll remember when a chill wind takes the sky
To think of years he gave us hope, for they will never die.
And as we gaze at brave young men when yesterdays roll on,
Then I think we'll know Where Our Friend Has Gone.

When I was performing, I always played one or two JS songs in every show--usually Daydream Believer, and July, You're a Woman, or California Bloodlines, but I tended to add
something from every new album to the repertoire. His songs worked well with my voice, and had a solid and real quality that few other songwriters could manage.

Many years ago, when I lived in California, I was driving from somewhere to somewhere with some random folks, when, out of the blue, we crossed Wild Horse Rd--much to the consternation of my passengers, I turned down the road, just to see it, and sang a few lines of the song. They didn't any of it.

Stewart has been my favorite singer/songwriter for most of my life, from just after his K/T days. I play a number of his songs, and they are genereraly met with blank looks, 'cept Daydream Believer, Runaway Train, and Gold. I was wondering who else played his tunes, and which ones....Mike
