Subject: Lyr Add: ONCE IN LOVE WITH AMY (Frank Loesser) From: Jim Dixon Date: 01 Feb 10 - 05:01 PM I transcribed the following lyrics from the singing of Barry Manilow on his album "Showstoppers," found with Google. ONCE IN LOVE WITH AMY Frank Loesser From the musical "Where's Charley?" I caught you, sir, having a look at her As she went strolling by. Now didn't your heart go boom-boom-boom-boom-boom? And didn't you sigh a sigh? I warned you, sir, never to dream of her. Just bid such thoughts be gone, Or it'll be boom, boom, boom-boom-boom-boom-boom Boom-boom-boom-boom from then on. For once in love with Amy, Always in love with Amy. Ever and ever, fascinated by her Sets your heart afire to stay. Once you're kissed by Amy, Tear up your list; it's Amy. Ply her with bonbons, poetry, and flowers. You might be quite the fickle-hearted rover, So carefree and bold, Who loves a girl and later thinks it over, And just quits cold. But once in love with Amy, Always in love with Amy. Ever and ever, sweetly you'll romance her. Trouble is, the answer will be (Ha-ha-ha-ha!) That Amy'd rather stay in love with me. |
Subject: Lyr Add: ONCE IN LOVE WITH AMY (Homer & Jethro) From: Jim Dixon Date: 01 Feb 10 - 05:03 PM You can hear this parody at WFMU'S Beware of the Blog. It's from the album "Homer and Jethro Fracture Frank Loesser": ONCE IN LOVE WITH AMY [parody] As sung by Homer & Jethro Once in love with Amy, Always in love with Amy. Ever and ever, aggravated with her, Keeps you in a dither all day. Once old Amy kissed me, I wished that she had missed me. She made me quiver like a chunk o' liver When I fin'lly come up for air. Amy looks so daring and inviting When she's wearing slacks. From the rear, it looks just like two pigs a-fighting In a gunny sack. Once you're hooked with Amy, Your goose is cooked with Amy. Once you have got 'er, get yourself a blotter. You'll be in hot water for life. You should have got yourself another wife. She waited hopin' I would pop the question Till years had elapsed. She set and waited for her ship to come in Till her pier collapsed. Once in love with Amy, Always in love with Amy. Now we're a twosome, and it's really gruesome. When we kiss, it tickles my chin. I wish she'd shave her whiskers off ag'in. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Once in Love with Amy (Frank Loesser) From: Cool Beans Date: 01 Feb 10 - 05:28 PM It's MOON a million hours away, not MOVE: Once you're kissed by Amy, Tear up your list; it's Amy. Ply her with bonbons, poetry, and flowers. MOON a million hours away. And, yes, the meaning of the verb "to moon" has changed since Ray Bolger sang the song in the 1952 movie "Where's Charley?" |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Once in Love with Amy (Frank Loesser) From: Jim Dixon Date: 01 Feb 10 - 07:35 PM Yeah, I thought "move a million hours away" sounded a little strange, but it never even occurred to me that he might be saying something else. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Once in Love with Amy (Frank Loesser) From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Feb 10 - 03:54 AM I found the lyrics in Reading Lyrics, by Robert Gottlieb and Robert Kimball. In print, it's clearly "MOON a million hours away." Hope you don't mind that I added the correction above, Jim. There are other differences, but nothing significant. I listened to several recordings on Spotify, and heard a lot of minor differences in lyrics. The Ray Bolger recording is terrific, by the way. I suppose Sinatra's recording is the standard, but Bolger is far better at bringing out the cleverness of Loesser's lyrics. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Once in Love with Amy (Frank Loesser) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 02 Feb 10 - 05:51 PM "Once in Love with Amy" (1948). From Frank Loesser website: "As Susan Loesser recalled, the song was actually written six years earlier when Frank Loesser, Peter Lind Hayes, Haye's wife Mary Healy, were working for the Army's Radio Productions Unit in California. ""Always an early riser, he [Loesser] would already be pounding away on a muted keyboard when Mary came downstairs at 6:00 a. m. She would bring him coffee, which he appreciated so much that he wrote a song for her: 'Once in Love with Mary.' Six years later it became Ray Bolger's show-stopper."" Frank Loesser The PBS documentary, "Heart & Soul, The Life and Music of Frank Loesser," is available on DVD. |
