Subject: Song about a man's love for his horse From: GUEST,vjoseph Date: 03 Feb 10 - 07:52 PM I've been scouring all of my cowboy and western songbooks, but can't find a song that fits. There's gotta be one out there. I'm looking for a "love" song about the connection between a man and his horse. Thanks! |

Subject: Lyr Add: A MAN'S BEST FRIEND IS HIS HORSE From: GUEST,999 Date: 03 Feb 10 - 08:41 PM A MAN'S BEST FRIEND IS HIS HORSE (written by: Joe Lubin, Al Vann & Wilton Moore) Way out in Kansas City, I met a gal so pretty, She looked a lady in her gingham gown. She said, "I love you honey", But how she loved my money, She took it all, And blew right out of town. CHORUS Oh! A Man's Best Friend Is His Horse, But of course, but of course. Oh! A girl's nice to hold, But they just want your gold. So, A Man's Best Friend Is His Horse The sheriff's daughter Rhoma, As dry as Oklahoma, Her eyes were crossed, Her knees were bowed and frail Her corsets you can't carry, Unless you want to marry, As quick as light'ning striking, I hit the trail. Oh! A Man's Best Friend Is His Horse, But of course, but of course. As the guns blazed away, I heard the sheriff say Oh! A Man's Best Friend Is His Horse. A bar in old Montana, A broken down piana, The backroom where the boys All play blackjack. While dealing cards one night there, I had a duelling fight there, Because they found five aces In my pack. Oh! A Man's Best Friend Is His Horse, But of course, but of course. If you're quick on the draw, Then you'll learn all the more, That A Man's Best Friend Is His Horse. Of course, So A Man's Best Friend Is His Horse. VAUGHN MONROE AND HIS ORCHESTRA VOCALS BY VAUGHN MONROE AND MALE CHORUS FROM THE MOTION PICTURE; "TOUGHEST MAN IN ARIZONA" STARRING VAUGHN MONROE |
Subject: RE: Song about a man's love for his horse From: Artful Codger Date: 03 Feb 10 - 09:10 PM "Chopo", by N. Howard "Jack" Thorp. "Patonio/Platonio/Plantonia (etc.), Pride of the Plains" "Doney Gal" "There's a Bridle Hanging on the Wall" - Carson J. Robison. There's also the poem "Ladrone", by Hamlin Garland, that you might trim and fashion into a song. Cowboys (particularly in the days of the trail drive) would not ride just one horse, but several, selected from the remuda. Their relation to their horses was one of work and shared travails--as they'd speak of fellow hands--more than of deep personal affection. So authentic songs about the connection between cowboys and horses mostly reflect the work, and the sentimentalism or esteem is phrased in that context, as the songs I've listed demonstrate. |
Subject: RE: Song about a man's love for his horse From: katlaughing Date: 03 Feb 10 - 09:51 PM Not about love for a horse, but a kind of funny kid's song from 1956 A Cowboy Needs a Horse. [Lyrics] |
Subject: RE: Song about a man's love for his horse From: quokka Date: 03 Feb 10 - 11:46 PM This song, while not solely about a man's love for his horse, certainly expresses that love pretty well. Unwelcome Guest [lyrics] |

Subject: Lyr Add: DOWN THE ROAD (from Gus Elen) From: Young Buchan Date: 04 Feb 10 - 04:42 AM Do ponies count as horses? DOWN THE ROAD As sung by Gus Elen Since first I copp'd a tidy lump o'swag l've always kept a decent little nag; But one as I shall sing about to you now, Was worth a million jimmies in a bag I matched her against the best that could be found Four owners made a stake of sixty pound So the race was duly run, And I'll tell you how I won With brave Polly my old pony world renowned. CHORUS: Down the road, away went Polly, With a step so jolly, That I knew she'd win; Down the road, the pace was killing, But the mare was willing For a lightning spin: All the rest were licked, and might as well ne'er been born Woa mare! Woa mare! You've earned your little bit of corn! Tom Jones the butcher thought that form untrue! Says he "Look here, I'll tell you what I'll do My cob shall trot your mare again next Monday, And fifty more bright sov'rins I will blue If you prove she can beat him once again I'll never more in this world touch a rein!" Though I knew he'd got no chance, He insisted on the dance, So now I must tell you how we slew the slain. CHORUS Soon after that she reached the final goal (I'd had the little wonder from a foal) And grief too keen to talk about was mine, when Poor Polly was carted off to fill a hole. My missus and the kids all went with me The last of poor pet pony Pol to see; And our neighbours shared the grief, That was felt beyond belief When the little mare was buried R.I.P. CHORUS: Down the road, away went Polly, Not a face look'd jolly, 'Twould have seemed a sin; Down the road, the pace was killing, But the dead mare was willing For a final spin: Ev'rybody looked so sad, And I felt quite forlorn Woa mare! Woa mare! You've earned your little bit of corn! |
Subject: RE: Song about a man's love for his horse From: Nigel Parsons Date: 04 Feb 10 - 05:05 AM How about: I have a golden foal, who Is four years old, and moves- With four, fine, silver horse shoes Upon his four stout hooves He leaps and prances gaily Beneath a maiden fair. Full twenty miles he'll carry her Of bridle unaware Taken from Cân y Melinydd Admittedly in this case it is a woman's love for a horse! |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE LITTLE BLACK FOAL (Jake Thackray) From: Emma B Date: 04 Feb 10 - 07:39 AM I've always been a Jake Thackray fan - this was the very first song of his I heard. Not eactly a man's love for his horse but his love for the horse his love rides on :) THE LITTLE BLACK FOAL Oh, little coal-black foal, little mole-black foal, I know your trot-trot; I've heard it such a lot-lot; Let me guess who you've got-got on your Low little coal-black back, little mole-black back, Oh, so black back today - clip-clopping this way, tail swinging: Are you coming to stay? Are you bringing... The girl who lives down the lane - said she'd see me again. Is it her out there, with the bluebell eyes and the buttercup hair? Or... Is it His Worship, the Mayor, her father, With his brand new jodhpurs and his little hunting cap? Off to a meeting of the Rural District Council Where they'll all talk a load of clap-trap. Oh, little coal-black foal, little mole-black foal, I know your trot-trot; I've heard it such a lot-lot; Let me guess who you've got-got on your Low little coal-black back, little mole-black back, Oh, so black back today - clip-clopping this way, tail swinging: Are you coming to stay? Are you bringing... The girl who lives down the lane, with the pert little bottom and the silky skin - If it's the same, I'll invite her in. Or... Is it her mother with the huge hindquarters Which she's tried disguising at considerable expense, Off to dig the dirt with the local ladies? Well, it's all a load of stuff and nonsense Oh, little coal-black foal, little mole-black foal, I know your trot-trot; I've heard it such a lot-lot; Let me guess who you've got-got on your Low little coal-black back, little mole-black back, Oh, so black back today - clip-clopping this way, tail swinging: Are you coming to stay ? Are you bringing... The girl who lives down the lane - I can't remember her name, I only met her last night - With breasts like apples, and her arms are white... or... Is it that big bad bastard, her brother, With the swanky jacket and the handlebar moustache, Thinking of his drinking and how good he is with women - Well it's all a load of balderdash... Oh, little coal-black foal, little mole-black foal, I know your trot-trot; I've heard it such a lot-lot; Let me guess who you've got-got on your Low little coal-black back, little mole-black back, Oh, so black back today - clip-clopping this way, tail swinging: Are you coming to stay ? Are you bringing... The girl who lives down the lane, with the delicate neck, and the dreamy brow, And the pouting little belly - is that her now ? I hope it is, I hope it is, I hope it is... |

Subject: RE: Song about a man's love for his horse From: Cuilionn Date: 04 Feb 10 - 10:24 AM Can't put my hands on the recordings just now, but I believe the Rankin Family does one about the ponies that used to work in the coal mines, and Battlefield Band has a real tear-jerking tribute to an old draft horse on one of their albums. It's called "The Last Trip Home." |

Subject: RE: Song about a man's love for his horse From: eddie1 Date: 04 Feb 10 - 05:23 PM Hi Kendall The Eric Bogle song you referred to is called "As If He Knows" about the horses of the Australian Light Horse in the Middle East in WWI being destroyed because it was feared they would bring disease back to Australia (not the general's horse, of course, that was obviously disease free!) Each man shot the horse of his best friend so no-one had to kill their own horse. The old soldier Eric got the idea for the song from could not remember the names of most of his mates but remembered the name of his horse - Banjo. I find it difficult to even write about the song - never mind sing it. Eddie |
Subject: RE: Song about a man's love for his horse From: Marje Date: 04 Feb 10 - 05:33 PM There's a lovely (traditional, I think) song that Tim Laycock does, but I can't find it on the web. It begins something like "When I was a young man, I'd walk with my team, and all my delight was in keeping them clean". It's all about how much he enjoys working with and caring for the horses, and I find it a very touching song. [The Carter] And yes, "Last Trip Home" ia a splendid song too. Both of those are about heavy horses that work on the land, not the cowboy sort of horse that you ride on to gallop around the plains, but they seem to inspire just as much affection. Marje |

Subject: RE: Song about a man's love for his horse From: Artful Codger Date: 04 Feb 10 - 09:04 PM Do you people NEVER bother to read previous posts before you add your two pence?? That's at least the FOURTH time someone quoted that one-line song. And "Tennessee Stud" and "Last Trip Home" were both suggested previously (not counting the posts responding to those suggestions). Here's a clue: If you expect other people to pay attention to your posts, please return the favor. If the thread seems too long to slog through, chances are someone else has beaten you to the draw, so don't make it longer with redundant comments. Of course, the worst offenders probably won't bother to read this... |
