Subject: RE: BS: Explosion at Connecticut power plant From: Ebbie Date: 07 Feb 10 - 05:44 PM God. I hope it's not as bad as now reported. Associated Press/ updated 3 minutes ago MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Workers at a power plant under construction were purging natural gas lines when a powerful explosion blew off part of the building Sunday, killing multiple people and injuring at least 14, officials said. The Middletown mayor's office said five people were known dead and least 12 people were injured. Al Santostefano, the deputy fire marshal in Middletown, said 50 construction workers were in the section of the power plant where the explosion happened at 11:17 a.m. He said he did not know what caused the explosion. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35283135/ns/us_news/ |

Subject: RE: BS: Explosion at Connecticut power plant From: Charley Noble Date: 08 Feb 10 - 08:47 AM They are still saying five were killed this morning. Evidently the accident happened when they were purging gas from the lines after the initial testing. Tragic as this accident was to the workers immediately involved, there was negligible impact on the surrounding region other than a few broken windows and the noise of the explosion itself. However, even a partial meltdown of a nuclear reactor, such as happened at Three Mile Island in 1979, can rupture the reactor vessel itself (documented weeks after the accident) and release radioactive gas dispersed for thousands of miles. Subject: RE: BS: Explosion at Connecticut power plant From: bubblyrat Date: 08 Feb 10 - 01:00 PM Apparently, the company that built the power station are due to soon finish building an identical model, which is now almost ready for "testing", near Newport in South Wales, UK ; there is now likely to be some delay until the cause of the US disaster is ascertained. |

Subject: RE: BS: Explosion at Connecticut power plant From: SINSULL Date: 08 Feb 10 - 01:10 PM A similar accident occurred in NC not too long ago. Now there is a call for regulations and guidelines on purging gas lines. Seems these are vented indoors not out. |
