Subject: BS: The Cat

So the wife wanted cats. Our house has now had cats for about 7 years as a result.

Right now we have a number of issues with the young male of the mother son combo we have had the longest.

This cat is named Tinsel, as he was adopted in the holiday season and is a grey/white/silver kind of a cat. He never liked me.

Firstly he has the largest hernia the vet has ever seen, though the vet thinks it is not really hurting the cat. While the hernia only became apparent in the last year the vet thinks he always had it. However now seems to be developing hair loss and sores on the side of the down hanging hernia. Not sure why.

Best of all he has been having a bit of an ass problem over the last 4 months. He has been generating stool he has trouble passing, and when that happens he gets uncomfortable When he gets uncomfortable he also starts leaking stool around the plug he has digested, he also seems to forget where the litter box is when he pees. Couches, beds, carpets, all fair game.

He has been to the vet a few times with this issue. We have changed his diet. I have, rubber gloves on hands, milked several obstructive turds out of the end of his digestive tract. What a joy that is. Still we have distribution of excrement issues.

I think this cat gets one last trip to the vet. I love all my pets and I hate to see him suffer. I also hate milking turds out of his ass and washing sheets and carpets that have been defecated upon. I know he is not happy either.

So there it is.

Nick,
None of that is normal. I would try a different vet.

So would I. It's good you have been willing to do so much for him, but as Sins says, it is not normal and a different vet, one who really likes treating cats, has some of their own, would be best.

Good luck,

kat

I once took a cat to the animal shelter because it had terminal stupidity. It used to do its business under a chair not more than three feet away from an open door. I've never regretted the decision.

I have two cats who suffer from terminal stupidity and choose to deal with it. Nick's cat is ill not stupid.

hernia
hair loss
sores
constipation
litter-box issues?

You need a different vet. I can't believe an animal doctor would let such things go on.

Well, good for you Revelations (Sinsull?). But if Nick decides differently than you, I don't think he should feel in the least bit guilty about it.

An umbilical hernia is a defect or hold in the muscle layer of the abdominal wall, such that contents of the abdomen may poke through it under the skin layer. Usually, it is just a small amount of intra-abdominal fat that protrudes, however occasionally important structures such as a loop of intestine may poke through the defect. If this happens, the animal potentially could get quite sick, with vomiting, poor appetite, and abdominal pain noted as the intestine is trapped and strangulated.

If intestine is trapped it may account for the pooping problem. Constipation can cause all kinds of other issues too, especially with the skin.
