Did anyone else see the PBS News Hour story tonight of the Klezemer Band/Mariachi Band performance? It was wonderful.

Talk about a great synthesis of musical styles! But thenthere are several large Jewish communities in Mexico City, Tijuana and perhaps other cities. Or do I assume too much in thinking this takes place in Mexico? Obviously I did not see this show.---John

I tried to find it for you on the PBS website, but all I found was the reference to it on the News Hour page:

Jeffrey Kaye of KCET/Los Angeles reports on an unusual musical collaboration.

It was neat to watch the rehearsals of the Klezmer band and the Mariachi band together, then the day of the two performances they did. They showed the back of the vihuela, how it looks like an armadillo, and I was reminded of our discussion of the tiple. It was wonderful to watch. Wish they had the entire performance as a program. click here

I didn't see the report but I'm curious if anyone knows which klezmer band it was? Was it a group local to Mexico?

A few years ago, the Klezmer Conservatory Band from Boston did a show here in Montreal in which they collaborated with the French Canadian band La Boittine Souriante. Over all, I though the separate sets by each band were much better than the one they did together, but it did have its moments.

The two bands were Los Angeles bands. Station KCET in LA would have the details if you want to contact them. I wish they had more about it at the PBS website.
