Next week I should change IP suppliers and upgrade from "steam driven" dial-up to wireless broadband (dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century!).
It may go smoothly... but I know many friends have had horror stories! So I may be offline (cheers!) for a while. If not and when I'm back I'll let anyone who needs my e-mail address know and post an update on this thread. We're promised 5mb rather than 8mb advertised but should be an improvement on current best of 45.2kbps (and at half the price).

Just in case you need them, it can be worthwhile keeping details of a pay-per-minute dial-up service somewhere to hand. A surprising number of broadband providers expect you to contact them only via e-mail, which can be problematic if their service is not working how you would wish.

The sort of service I mean is provided by these people among others. If you save the details in your dial-up settings you will just need to find a modem cable if bad things happen and you need to use them.

That said, the horror stories about installing broadband seem to be dwindling and you may well find it a problem-free process. I do hope so, best of luck.

So are you going to upgrade from using that ear trumpet too or is this about all your sorry old ass can take at one time?

Yes, I have just done more-or-less the same thing, and eagerly await delivery of my new Wireless Broadband "Thingy"---my "package" is for High speed (so they say !) Broadband, 'phone line rental, and free evening & weekend calls, plus cheap rates for calls to mobiles, for an all-in price of £18-48 per month. With my present set-up,I am paying nearly that just for dial-up internet access !!

Well all I can say is this, when you pay BT for the highest rate in Mbs,[Option 3} you DON'T GET IT. So opt for the cheapest service, you'll probably never notice the difference.

If you keep a PaYG dialup alive (log on once a month) it can be invaluable when your ISP goes down.

Despite the worst efforts of the o2 "help" line we managed to set up our new account and are now seeing Mudcat much faster!
If you have our old e-mail address and need our new one, PM me and I'll oblige.

Wireless will be much faster than dial-up, but it won't allow the fastest that the broadband is capable of. AND unless the wireless router has a phenomenal buffer it will restrict the burst speed. You won't get the full quoted broadband speed because it is shared with your neighbours, but the wireless router still imposes limitations because of the burst rates.

If you don't watch TV on "play it again" I doubt this will be noticeable though.

Now - have you miked-up that Tea-Chest base yet?
