The Stag is a good pub for music and quite often there is an inpromptu sing around there. Quite often on the Sunday evening there is a session in the bar at the White Rock Hotel near the pier. Monday is all about the Jack - it starts off with him being released from the Fisherman's museum down at the Stade. There is then a procession through the streets of the Old Town with the Jack and his party and all the Morris sides that attend the festival. They all go on up to the Castle where each Morris side performs on a stage and the afternoon culminates in the slaying of the Jack at around 3.30pm. If it is a nice day it is glorious - there are various craft stalls and food and drink are available. However, if the weather is looking a bit dodgy wrap up warm as it gets windy up on the West Hill. Hope you enjoy the festival.

The Nelson was pretty much still a bikers pub last year. The FILO great for beer and food. And the Stag for music and song.

I don't know anything about any festivals in Hastings, but I do know that the best pub in the town is The First In Last Out - known as the FILO - at the top of the Old Town. The Lord Nelson, at the corner of the coast road, where it rounds away and up to Ore, was a ravers' pub many years ago - bikers at the front of the bar, Fats Domino on the juke box, and all the quiet smokers of substances sat in a haze of smoke at the rear of the pub. The landlord, a big chap, kept a buzzard on the back balcony...

I shall be there next Monday, stocking up on fresh fish from Johnny Swann's wet fish shop near the Old Town beach. A pint of prawns from a stall, a pint of beer outside the London Trader, weather permitting, and a stroll along the front, will do me nicely.

Hastings - a great mix of the seedy & tatty, the bohemian and the elegant Georgian.
