The picture on page 73 of today's Times, of Demichelis of Bayern grasping Man Utd's Rooney's shirt, convinces me yet again that soccer could go far to being transformed into a decent game once more by the simple expedient of making the deliberate holding of an opponent's clothing an automatic red-card offence: simple to enforce, and to my mind entirely justifiable.

Who agrees.

What I would like to see - and it could be done - is for shirts to be made in detachable strips. Then the cheat would end up with a handful of material and have to explain to the ref: "He put it there! Honest!"

Like you MtheGM, I would love to see this form of cheating ended.

Having said that, Scholes should have seen a straight red card last night for a shocking high tackle in the first half and Neville was more than lucky not to have already had a yellow card before he gave away the deliberate handball free kick, which led to Bayern's equaliser.

I would love to see shirt tugging stopped. It is spoiling the game and it is cheating .

However, how would the referee manage it. When you see re runs of corners, free kicks etc, almost every player is tugging somebodies shirt.

Maybe it would help if the design of shirts was changed. Shirts seem to be a lot baggier these days than in the '60's and '70's when tighter shirts and shorts were the fashion. When I played amateur footie in my younger days, there wasn't much shirt to grab hold of, especially if tucked into the shorts.

Yes ~~ that's just the point, Villan. They'd soon stop if they knew it would get them sent straight off. Perhaps a three-month [or whatever] period during which it meant automatic yellow, so off if 2ce in a game: & then bring in the full red-card rule.

Bet it could work.

I think you are right about something must be done to eliminate this ridiculous practice that has been creeping into the game rapidly.

Whether a straight red would be the answer I am not sure. It would be so difficult to manage fairly.

Maybe introducing a sinbin offence would be a good start. That way the team would be penalised but not for the whole of the rest of the game.

Of course a more radical solution would be no shirts.....just spray the team colours on before the start of the game???

Agreed - it's a form of cheating and should be banned - as should swearing at the ref or liner.

Just realised Mike that if that was done, surely they would have to apply it to the womens game as well. :-)

We could also stop players putting themselves between the ball and the goal - how unsporting is that? And what is it with letting other players trying to kick the same ball that you are playing? Surely that can lead to all sorts of injury. A ball each would be much safer.

We can also apply all these rules to Rugby, Aussie Rules and Hurling. Just what is the point of all this competition. Nothing but testosterone driven madness...

But, I especially like Spaw's. That crap has caused me to mute the sound on the TV and sometimes switch to sommat else. It's EXTREMELY disturbing. Seriously, WTF is wrong with people that do that? It's just rude.

Howsabout accepting that outrage at decisions or actions is all part of the fun?

Graeme Souness got into a lot of trouble when as a commentator he pointed out that perhaps John Motson shouldn't get so het up over players fighting, as it was all part of the entertainment in the same way as crashes in F1 get more replays than a technically brilliant overtaking manoeuvre.

I am with you about trying to shut that excess noise.

Some years ago I went to Old Trafford to watch England play Weat Indies ( at cricket) and was unfortunate to be sat right in front of a "calpyso band" !!!

Remember test match cricket over here goes on fro about eight hours a day for, at that time, five days.

That year the press were all praise about this "Calypso Cricket" and how it was adding to the game.

I have to admit that watching on TV or listening on the radio it did seem to add a little something.

BUT NOT SAT TWO YARDS IN FRONT OF THEM !!!!!

JtS ~~ yes, the rules are settled. It is against the rules for any player to hold another player by body or clothing. For some reason this rule is being increasingly disregarded, turning much of play into a nonsense ~ see eg Villan's post of 31 March 4.29 AM, & my reply to it.

That was my reason for starting this thread in the first place.

Villan: I think the main effect which it could have would be to make the women's game instantly more attractive to spectators than the men's game!

Joking aside, I think my earlier idea of having shirts in Velcro strips would help aside. While I agree with MtheGM that players deserve to be sent off for deliberate cheating, the practice is now so widespread that many players believe it is part of the game. If they were going to be caught every time they did it however, they would lose any chance of gaining an advantage. I think that is what you want to see, isn't it?

I stopped watching soccer many, many years ago. Too much money, too much cheating, too much professional fouling, too much hugging, kissing and weeping. Faugh! A murrain on them all.

Over here at the cricket they play almost cintinously all day. In fact each ball is brought to a loud crescendo as the bowler runs up to bowl.
In an average day's tast cricket there are approximately 1000 balls bowled !!!! Not nice.....as evening approaches the alcohol starts to kick in and the noise gets worse.
