Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: JohnInKansas Date: 02 Mar 11 - 04:08 AM Perhaps of interest: B-side of civil rights movement reaches new audience By Katti Gray 8:09 AM on 02/28/2011 ... Baylor University 2-year-old Gospel Music Restoration Project, which recently has been unearthing what its chief archivist says are lesser known "B-side" recordings of civil rights protests by famous and obscure gospel artists alike. "No Segregation in Heaven," "The Alabama Bus," and "Assassination" are a sample of the 78s, 45s, LPs and tapes in assorted formats, dating back to 1919, that are among the roughly 1,600 songs cataloged thus far. "That they were on the B-side suggest a couple of things: Few radio stations, which mainly were white-owned, were doing playing gospel music at all, so they were not widely circulated. And what was on the B-side mostly was being listened to in the black community," said Robert Darden, 57, a Baylor journalism professor who founded the archives. "It was a kind of private message." Private, perhaps, but only to a point. In the 1920s and '30s, Birmingham's arm of the white-dominated AFL-CIO actually hired the local CIO Singers, a gospel quarter, to open its union rallies with a combination of straight-out, heaven-bound gospel but also protesting gospel songs. "Every community -- places where there was no other entertainment--had one of these quartets. The unions used them to promote their cause, but, more centrally, they had a lot to do with battling Jim Crow," said the Rev. George Stewart, 57, a former radio broadcaster and record company executive who founded the American Gospel Quartet Convention. Along with lay singers, gospel artists were among those who opened for civil rights pioneers such as Martin Luther King Jr. "They we would preach and we would sing. It would be a whole concert sometimes. That's how we played a part in the movement," said Roscoe Robinson, 82, of Birmingham, Ala. He sang with, among others, the prominent Blind Boys of Alabama and Blind Boys of Mississippi, Sam Cooke and the Soul-Stirrers and Highway QCs. Baylor's restoration aims to identify, legally acquire and preserve that music, made by legends such as the Blind Boys, Hummingbirds and Della Reese, artists with regional followings and those suspected of working under an assumed name, fearing what they might suffer if their true identities got out … Right now, 30-second clips of the songs can be accessed on their website. Available on iTunes are 15 songs that the archive's lawyers have concluded are so-called orphans, with no authors, copyright owners or artists' heirs who are still alive. (In Black History Month 2010 and 2011, iTunes promoted the 15 on the Web site's front page.) Lawyers are still trying to determine the manner and extent to which the broader catalogue might eventually be made available to the public. To hear the recordings in their entirety, "right now, you have to come to Waco," Darden said. Once the legalities are settled, Darden hopes that universities whose musicologists have expressed interests in the archives might make them accessible through listening stations. Meanwhile, in addition to the music, the project also aims to collect press packets, photos, packets, taped interviews, tour books, souvenir journals, news clippings, sheet music and such that scholars can review. I usually play five or six songs one after the other and don't practice them much but you can learn the song even if it's rough. Here are the lyrics and chords: COME OVER HERE- Elder Richard Bryant (arranged Matteson) Come over [C]here The table is ready And the [F]feast of the Lord is going [C]on. You can watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bn4Ap3vIc6s Here's my transcription- also on my site: COOL DOWN YONDER- Marion Williams Cool down here along the banks, banks of Jordan It's cool down here along the banks of Jordan Cool down here along the banks, banks of Jordan Jesus gonna meet me there- He's gonna meet me there. It's so cool down there- the chilly Jordan Cool down there- the chilly Jordan. It's cool down there- chilly Jordan But Jesus gonna meet me there- He's gonna meet me there. Well I stepped in water up to my knees I cried, "Lord have mercy, if you please," Stepped in water 'round my head, Spirit make it but my, child is dead And it's cool-----, Yeah it's cool down there- the chilly Jordan Chile it's cool down here- chilly Jordan. Jesus gonna meet me there- He's gonna meet me there. I said,"Meet me, my Lord meet me, Meet me in the middle of the air. If these wings should fail me, I'm gonna try me another pair. Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: Richie Date: 03 Jun 10 - 08:14 PM Hi, the last chord should be a C chord sorry- here it's fixed: COME OVER HERE- Elder Richard Bryant (arranged Matteson) Come over [C]here The table is ready And the [F]feast of the Lord is going [C]on. Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: Richie Date: 03 Jun 10 - 04:35 PM BTW, this is how I play the song. Listen to the song by using the link in my last post which goes to Juneberry's. The Am is not actually there I added it for interest. To play with the recording Capo 1: COME OVER HERE- Elder Richard Bryant (arranged Matteson) Come over [C]here The table is ready And the [F]feast of the Lord is going [C]on. Come over [C]here The table is [Am]ready And the [C]feast of the [G]Lord is going [G]on. Preacher over [C]here The table is ready And the [F]feast of the Lord is going [C]on. Shout over [C]here The table is [Am]ready And the [C]feast of the [G]Lord is going [G]on. I'll probably to a youtube vid of it to show people how to play it. Even tho it's easy, many people on youtube don't know the song. Rcihie |

Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: Richie Date: 30 Apr 10 - 05:43 PM Beeliner- Gospel music, At least as I define it really started around 1921 with Gospel Pearls, maybe the first gospel songbook. The old African-American spirituals are in my opinion gospel and have been redone by different groups. Southern gospel is alligned with the Vaughans and fits a similar time frame. The Vaughan southern gospel record label started around 1922. The music is older and traded among white a black groups to some extent. The Carter Family and Bill Monore borrowed from the African-American tradition Haruo- America, should be included and I've thought about it and think it fits also. Mainly I'm going for religious songs that are folk in nature. There were probably 100,000 hymns written from 1860 until 1923, some of them should be included if they were recorded by southern/gospel groups. I'm sticking somewhat with Meade/Tony Russell's list of recorded songs. TY Richie |
Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: beeliner Date: 30 Apr 10 - 03:59 PM Also also, there are a lot of 'spirituals' which cannot be considered 'gospel' songs since their references are specifically to the Old Testament. "Ezekiel Saw the Wheel", "Dry Bones", and "Little Moses" are the first three that come to mind, but there are many others, and you have already listed some, the Adam and Eve songs and the Jonah for example. |
Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: Haruo Date: 30 Apr 10 - 02:05 PM Richie, what sort of line are you drawing between "Gospel Song" and anything else? I certainly think of "A Charge to Keep I Have" as a straight hymn, especially sung to BOYLSTON, which I assume is the Mason tune you're thinking of. Your last comment suggests that anything that's been done by bluegrass and country and African-American singers might qualify in your book. Is your "Amsterdam" the hymn tune, or the song that goes "Amster, Amster, dam/dam/dam" or something else? You don't have "America the Beautiful" (or maybe we have to wait till you get to "O"?), though it's certainly been done by the three "kinds" of singers you referred to. Haruo |
Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: Richie Date: 30 Apr 10 - 01:45 PM Hi, TY I considered it, and didn't think it should be included. Now think it should qualify since it has been done by bluegrass and country and African-American singers. I like the song and used to play it. I've found several more, which I'll add later. Richie |
Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: beeliner Date: 30 Apr 10 - 05:28 AM "All Through the Night" would seem an obvious omission, or doesn't it qualify as a 'gospel' song? And if not, what are the qualification? Must there be an actaul reference, direct or indirect, to Jesus or to a gospel verse? |
Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: Richie Date: 30 Apr 10 - 12:43 AM This is what I'm doing, "A Beautiful Life" is listed in the A section but aslo as "Beautiful Life, A" in B section. Sometimes the A makes the title easier to understand. In general it's not necessary. "The" also is a word that most of teh time should be removed from the title. However a title like "The End" wouldn't make much sense as "End, The." BTW I've put all the songs from my database in the AB section now: http://bluegrassmessengers.com/traditional-and-public-domain-gospel-a-b.aspx I can't find the lyrics to the following AB songs: A Littel Talk with Jesus- Rev. Gay Davis After A While- Monroe Brothers All My Friends (to tune John henry) Wade Mariner All I Have Belongs To God- The Consolers Angels Backing Me- The Singing Crusaders Arm of God- Brown's Ferry Four Be A Man- Godfrey 1910 Be Mindful of Your Sacrament- Rev Gary Davis Believe in Jesus- Norfolk jubilee" Bells of Love- Middle Georgia Singing Convention No. 1. Beyond the River- (Recorded for victor) vaughan 1907 Bloom Brightly Sweet Roses- Fowler 1894 Book Of The Seven Seas- The Dixie Hummingbirds Born to Serve the Lord- E. C. Ball It's a good start, for now. Richie |
Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: beeliner Date: 29 Apr 10 - 09:21 PM I guess it would be up to the preference of the one making the list (unless constrained by a publisher's guidelines). Agreed, and by the way, referring to your earlier post, the Winsett song is usually identified as "Tramp on the Street", without the article at all. |
Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 29 Apr 10 - 08:25 PM Beeliner- That has become common practice, but many of the 19th C. indexes start with the A; e. g., song index in The Story of the Jubilee Singers and their Songs begins with "A Great Camp-meeting in the Promised Land." A. E. Brumley, in a gospel book I have, starts his index with 'A'. I guess it would be up to the preference of the one making the list (unless constrained by a publisher's guidelines). |
Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: beeliner Date: 29 Apr 10 - 07:49 PM Richie, I hesitate to bring this up, because it's not the law or anything, but titles beginning with an article are usually alphabetized by the word following the article, e.g. "A Beautiful LIfe" would normally be listed as 'Beautiful Life, A' |
Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: Richie Date: 26 Apr 10 - 01:02 AM Thanks for the comments and the link Susan, I've put about 50 more songs on since my last post and might be able to get most of the B songs on that I have up tonight. http://bluegrassmessengers.com.temp.realssl.com/traditional-and-public-domain-gospel-a-b.aspx You can see the ones I've added at the end. Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: maple_leaf_boy Date: 22 Apr 10 - 07:51 PM I noticed that you had Johnny Cash listed as an artist of one of your songs listed. Johnny had an album called "My Mother's Hymn Book". (One of his final recordings). |

Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: wysiwyg Date: 22 Apr 10 - 01:09 PM There is a piece on titling issues in the Spirituals permathread. Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: Richie Date: 21 Apr 10 - 11:18 PM Q, I'm not sure of an earlier source of Hank Williams song. Is there a similar version that he used for his spiritual? If not- it's copyrighted and, in general, can't be included. What I want to do is give people songs that they can freely use. The same title may be used for 5 different songs and in many cases it is. So titles are problematic. Thanks for your help and imput, Richie |
Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: Richie Date: 21 Apr 10 - 11:13 PM Hi, I'm still working on the B list. I'm not planning on adding anything but you or anyone can add or use what I have. I'm just making it available. There are probably 130 African-American Spirituals in what I've done so far (plus in many entries there are multiple versions). There are proably 50 songs not available on the internet- at least in an easily accessible form. I'm actually a bit overwhelmed by the amount of material- and realizing how much more there is. It's already taken me three weeks in my spare time and I haven't even done A-B... Richie |
Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 21 Apr 10 - 10:27 PM Richie, for some of the songs, title alone is insufficient for identification. "Home in Heaven" is an example. I have listed a few, but that line-stanza appears in several gospel-hymn-spiritual songs. "Ain't that Good News" as "Ain't Dat Good News " in McIlhenny "Befo' de War Spirituals." ---------------- "Home in Heaven" Several of them. Hank Williams version is the most sung of these songs. "A Home in Heaven," James Montgomery (1771-18??), in L. C. Stedman, 1895, "A Victorian Anthology." First two lines- Forever with the Lord Amen, so let it be. "A Home in Heaven" Version by Hank and Audrey Williams of old gospel song. 1 Round me many are building Homes of beauty and wealth But what of a home in Heaven Where will you live after death. "I am safely home in Heaven" "There's a Home Up in Heaven," Clarence W. Duffer. "Home in Heaven," Annie Rebekah Smith, 1855. "Home Here and Home in Heaven," Advent Review Office. |
Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: wysiwyg Date: 21 Apr 10 - 08:35 PM I just would hope that commentary and corrections on songs already posted would go in the threads where they are already posted, where feasible. (That would certainly be a help in not creating more threads to incorporate in the Spirituals index.) ~S~ |
Subject: RE: New Gospel Song Research From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 21 Apr 10 - 04:36 PM An intereting list. Adding a few remarks to each title would fill out the listing (and add a few volumes to the research). "A Little More Oil ..." is credited to Patrick Reid and also to Desmond Dekker of Jamaica, but probably earlier. The chorus is often used with other songs: A little more oil in my lamp keeps it burning A little more oil in my lamp I pray A little more oil in my lamop keeps it burning Keeps it burning to the break of day. Give Me Oil in (for) My Lamp" could be the antecedent. |
