IF any one receives an E Mail with my aol address it AINT from me !
Two people have received Viagra advertisements from my (Now TWO years out of date) E Mail address . At least it was only drugs , NOT a nasty virus , but be warned !

Can you not shut it down, Terry? It is obviously still associated with your address book too, if people have told you about it.

It won't matter what Terry does. People spoof addresses. They put somebody else's address in the 'from' block and/or the 'reply to' block, and the message does not come from that account.

I had a similar email hijacking on a hotmail account. I exported my address book to a csv, then deleted all contacts from the account. No more problems. I didn't want to deactivate the account unless unavoidable since it's the one I use to register at various sites.

I opened a gmail account and imported the contacts. I like to use the export-to-csv method to clean out and update my contacts every so periodically due to old addresses, people I don't correspond with, etc.

I've had at least two friends had their email accounts hi-jacked: you could tell from the content of the email that it wasn't from them.
I phoned them to tell them, rather than use their email address, which had just sent me such rubbish.

I got one, Terry. In my ISP's email, it just has your name on the email so I don't know if it's you until I open it. Perhaps letting AOL know what is going on would clear up the matter??

I had my hotmail account hacked, people were getting emails from me that weren't from me. My sent box was constantly full of all these emails. I closed the account down. If people still get emails from my hotmail account they aren't from me! I don't think there has been a problem since though

Most spam does not come from the address that it claims to be from. Addresses are harvested from address books and inboxes of compromised machines and used to spoof the "from" address in outgoing spam. The culprit is probably a mutual acquaintance of Terry and gnu.

I have for years too... but I regularly still get "your email cannot be sent" errors - my email addy used as a fake spam source...
