Something has happened today, when I try to log in to my browser, BT Yahoo the @ symbol will not appear, instead I get a capital A with a dot each side at the top of the letter which I presume is another language letter. The strange thing is that typing it anywhere else it works perfectly, it only happens in the login box of my browser, then obviously it won't let me log on.

I log in, in lower case but the capital A (with dots) still appears where the @ symbol should be.

Can anyone please help.

could be to do with the pads on your keyboard or

could be something to do with character set settings

I don't know how to find and adjust those. A google search on character set and your operating system my turn up something.

The wrong characters are typed
If the wrong characters are typed when you use the keyboard, follow the steps in the "The Keys Do Not Strike Correctly" section to clean the keyboard that are described under "The Keys Do Not Strike Correctly" earlier to make sure that no obstructions under the keys are causing this issue.

The keys do not strike correctly
If the keys do not strike correctly, make sure that the keyboard is free of dust, dirt, and foreign matter.

Turn the keyboard upside down to allow for any foreign debris, such as hair, food particles, or dust, to fall out.

We recommend that you periodically use compressed air to blow dust out of the hard-to-clean crevices in the keyboard.

If you spill a drink or some other liquid on the keyboard, immediately turn the keyboard upside down to let the liquid drain out, and then remove as much liquid as possible. Wait until the keyboard is completely dry before you use it again.

Do not take the keyboard apart. If you disassemble the keyboard, you may void the manufacturer warranty.

Note If you want to use a vacuum cleaner around the keyboard, make sure that the vacuum cleaner is a "static safe" vacuum cleaner.


If the issue continues to occur, connect the keyboard to a different computer. If the keyboard functions correctly on a different computer, the port to which the keyboard was connected on the original computer may be damaged. If this is the case, contact your computer manufacturer to ask about how to repair or replace the damaged port.

If the keyboard does not function correctly on another computer, the keyboard may be defective. If this is the case, and the warranty on the keyboard is still valid, you can exchange the defective keyboard for a new keyboard.

To test key response on the keyboard, use Microsoft Keyboard Diagnostics (MS Key), a utility program that is included with the Microsoft IntelliType software. To use MS Key, follow these steps.
Note The MS Key utility is only included with the Microsoft IntelliType software version 1.1 and later versions. If you do not have Microsoft IntelliType installed, you can visit the following Microsoft Web site to install this software:

IF it only happens in your browser, check the preferences or options of the application for a language setting. Blame it on the volcano that you are now surfing in Icelandic.

Most likely, as Amos said, it is a problem with that browser. Download a different browser and see if that fixes it.

I had a similar problem after a MAJOR resetting and finished up with 'American English' NOT 'UK English' I didnt realise that selecting the language in Control Panel was only stage one , and I had to Re select in the Language box as well , though I had already done that

Thanks for the tips folks. Still can't sort it but it's on the laptop so we still have the pc to login with.

I meant hold down the shift key and type a 2. If you Get an @ sign you've turned on scandinavian keyboard mapping. Just trying to be helpful.
