The publishers of Puffin books are celebrating 70 years by publishing a guide for parents and a list of the '70 best children's books of all time'. http://www.happybirthdaypuffin.co.uk/


There seem to be some glaring omissions, even if they only included Puffin books.

Which are your candidates.

Some that I would include for the 3 -5 age that weren't on the list
Peter's Chair (and other books by Jack Ezra Keats)

All the Dr Seuss books.

One that I enjoyed as a Playgroup worker, and is being used at our local Primary school, but I can't find any info on-line. 10 Green Monsters. A retelling of the green bottles rhyme, with lots of detail in the pictures.

Any list that omits Dr. Seuss isn't really any kind of a list, is it? Though I took a quick look and saw Roald Dahl at the top, so that's good.

All such lists reflect the preferences and prejudices of the people who compiled the list, and in this case influenced by their Puffin publications.

However, they are a guide, and may remind one of good choices that were forgotten or never considered.
I'm sure each of us can think of books that we liked but which are absent from this list.

I could be mistaken but I have always felt that Dr. Seuss was highly over rated. Not that they aren't entertaining, they are, but I think that everything else on the list is better..So what to remove to insert Dr. Seuss.
   Adults seem not to like Enid Blyton, but kids lover her, where is she and where is Arthur Ransome or perhaps is IS just books Published by Puffin.

My favourite (not in the Puffin list) is Brendon Chase, written in the 1940s by 'BB', alias of Denys Watkins Pitchford, who also did the woodcut illustrations. A new paperback edition came out a few years ago with an introduction by Philip Pullman.
