Subject: RE: To Max: For you from Mudcatters From: Soldier boy Date: 10 May 10 - 08:32 PM Like others above I would strongly recommend that Max comes over to the UK for the full week of the 'Whitby Folk Week' festival from Sat 21 to Fri 27 August 2010. It's a busy time in the UK folk calendar so I feel certain that there will be other events occuring before and after Whitby that could link up well. Whitby is a beautiful old seaside resort on the Yorkshire coast which attracts many mudcatters to it's festival and has a very strong "fringe" element in the local pubs and clubs with many musician sessions and singarounds where anything goes. So it is bound to be a hit with Max. If I know that Max will definately be coming to Whitby Folk Week I could start a thread to announce this to ensure we get the max amount of mudcatters to come to meet up with Max in Whitby at a mudcatter gathering and at various locations/sessions in the town throughout the week. It would be more than a real pleasure for me and many UK Mudcatters to meet Max because I feel that so many of us owe Max so much. So many of our festivals and events are broadcast on Mudcat and so many meet-ups and gatherings of old friends occur year after year thanks to Mudcat. In fact it is difficult now to imagine how we could do without it. So me and tons of other folkies in the UK owe him big time and will show him much appreciation and a very warm welcome indeed! Whitby Folk Week is a stunning festival where you are spoilt for choice of what to do and where to go during the week and is my personal favourite out of all the festivals in the UK. I will also PM you with details of a friend and fellow Mudcatter who lives in Whitby and who is a brilliant organiser and has more Mudcatter contacts than me. Very best regards. Chris |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Joe Offer Date: 10 May 10 - 10:27 PM Hi, Max - I'm sure you'll love Whitby. My favorite experiences were the children's concerts (hearing Janet Russell and Cyril Tawney do kids' songs was a trip to heaven), and especially the afternoon concerts in a pub in Robin Hood's Bay (about 5 miles south of Whitby). The town and the pub are about as picturesque as you could dream of. My only regret is that I didn't walk along the bluffs to Robin Hood's Bay at least once - I always took the bus. Oh, and I also took the bus to Scarborough, which was a wonderful trip. Riding the bus is a fun way to get around the area. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: open mike Date: 10 May 10 - 10:45 PM has anyone ever stayed here? http://www.whitby-cottage-holiday.co.uk/ room for 6, they say. |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Rob Naylor Date: 11 May 10 - 03:44 AM Only an American could think that travelling anywhere in the UK by bus is "fun" :-P |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Les from Hull Date: 11 May 10 - 07:29 AM What's the problem with buses? You don't have to drive, which means you can drink if you want to. It's quite a nice route and it doesn't take too long. You can stare at the scenery. It's nice to walk there (either along the old railway line or along the cliffs) and bus back to save time in what can be a very busy week. Check the programme to see who's booked to do a 'half a day at the Bay' on each particular day. You don't need a ticket. |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: bill\sables Date: 11 May 10 - 12:08 PM Looks like Skarpi is coming as well |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: SINSULL Date: 11 May 10 - 01:04 PM WOW Max is getting the royal treatment. Pictures, please. |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: My guru always said Date: 11 May 10 - 01:26 PM How I wish we could come along aswell to this huge Gather, but alas, too far to pull the van *sigh* We're at Moira Furnace Festival during the weekend at the start of Whitby which is almost half-way for us and I could get some holiday booked, but we'd need somewhere to lay our head and be able to leave the van somewhere near Moira. Hmmm, logistics eh? |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Fergie Date: 11 May 10 - 07:56 PM Is Max coming to Ireland while he is on this side of the pond? Fergus |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Soldier boy Date: 11 May 10 - 09:30 PM It's great that Max has teamed up with Dick Greenhaus and Susan on their travels to the UK and will be sharing a cottage with them in Whitby during Whitby Folk Week (Sat 21-fri 27 August '10.) So it really is confirmed that Max will be coming to join us all in Whitby at some point at that time and that his accomodation is all sorted. When we know his itinery we will learn how long he will be in Whitby for and I hope it will be for more than just two or three days because I know that we good friendly Yorkshire folk could easily treat him like a King and kidnap him for the full week. Long live the King! Chris P.S : Has anyone got some mug shots of Max or video of Max playing some Country Blues so we can all recognise him immediately and spot him on tour in the UK? And could he possibly extend his tour beyond two weeks to include the 'Wareham Wail' and stay for three weeks? The man deserves it! |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: katlaughing Date: 11 May 10 - 10:46 PM Check out this VIDEO of him doing a Johnny Cash cover "Any Old Wind That Blows." There are more on there. Also, some mug shots of a younger Max HERE. **bg** |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Soldier boy Date: 11 May 10 - 10:57 PM That's brilliant Katlaughing. I don't know why but I kind of expected Max to be an older kind of guy. Glad he is not and obviously so full of life and energy. He'll need that in Whitby! Bless. Chris |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: My guru always said Date: 12 May 10 - 03:31 AM It would be fabulous if Max has enough time to do Whitby and Wareham aswell! As soon as we know how long he is able to come over for we can start really planning his itinery. We will need to bear in mind that there are a lot of Catters who don't go to Whitby or Wareham who have actually contributed to Max's fund and or have offered hosting. We've been hoping for a trip to Ireland while he was over, but if people keep kidnapping him, that might not be possible. If he can only come over for 2 weeks he will be spread very thinly indeed! |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Dave the Gnome Date: 12 May 10 - 03:52 AM Max - If you don't get to Wareham there is a spledid weekend festival in Fleetwood (Fylde Folk Festival) that same weekend - Opposite coast to Whitby so you can do the coast to coast trip as well:-) Dick and Susan had a bit of a bad experience with inclement weather and my son's leaky tent but don't let that put you off. It has been know to be good weather there sometimes! I cannot offer anything by way of acomodation and I am just a touch too far anyway but I am sure there are plenty catters in the area who would assist or advise. Cheers Dave |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Dave the Gnome Date: 12 May 10 - 03:53 AM Sorry - should have linked - http://www.fylde-folk-festival.com/ D. |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Barb'ry Date: 12 May 10 - 07:34 AM If Max would like to come to Fylde, then he would be really welcome to stay with us. bx |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: My guru always said Date: 12 May 10 - 08:12 AM Thanks Barb'ry, I'll make a note of your offer!! Doesn't look like we'll get to see him down South *sniff* |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Dave the Gnome Date: 12 May 10 - 08:45 AM Shrewsbury Folk Festival falls between Whitby and Wareham/Fylde date wise and would be do-able on-route to either. I don't know anything about it though apart from there are some good names on! Dunno if that is any help! Cheers DeG BTW - Fylde is always on the same weekend they switch on Blackpool Hallucinations. Always worth seeing even if just to remind yourself to never go to Blackpool for a week :-D |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: katlaughing Date: 12 May 10 - 10:00 AM No problem, Soldier Boy/Chris. He's been the "Kid" to a lot of us who used to get to see him on live video broadcasts of "Mudcat Radio," way back when...:-) Just a thought...maybe actual festivals won't be as important as how many Mudcatters he can actually get to see? Depending on how long he'll be there and how many Mudcatters do or do not make it to any fests. (I have in mind the Great Mudcat Adventure that Bill Sables and AllanC did, years ago. Of course that was over here and they came waaaay out West, so drove from Mudcatter home to Mudcatter home...sometimes vast distances.:-) |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Max Date: 12 May 10 - 10:42 AM Ooh, this is fun. |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: My guru always said Date: 12 May 10 - 11:13 AM Good to see you here Max!! Good point Kat, I'm not certain that festivals are a priority (we UK'ers do seem to set our calendar by them), though it's obvious that Whitby is a Must as there'll be loads of Catters about. Making the best use of Max's time will be all-important closely followed by meeting as many Catters as possible. |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 12 May 10 - 12:00 PM Don't know how long you are staying, Max, but there are a few blues festivals around too. I'd have to look them up but can do if you like. RtS |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 12 May 10 - 12:06 PM ...No need to research blues festivals: all listed HERE (Covers UK & Europe). RtS |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Herga Kitty Date: 12 May 10 - 02:21 PM Pedant alert - the Wail is now held in Verwood, rather than Wareham! Kitty |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Herga Kitty Date: 12 May 10 - 02:56 PM Also, much as I love the Wail, and will be there again this year, I feel obliged to point out that it is a song and ale, for unaccompanied singing in an intimate setting, and Max, as an instrumentalist and singer, will perhaps find Fylde (the same weekend) more congenial and an opportunity to meet more Catters! Though the Wallingford Bunkfest will be that weekend too... Kitty |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: My guru always said Date: 13 May 10 - 04:45 AM Thanks Kitty, the other point about the Wail is that people needs to camp really, there's not much in the way of B&B and being 'on-site' is much better. Which would mean loaning tents & sleping stuff etc. I'm still hoping we'll be able to pass Max from Catter to Catter with Gathers inbetween, there have been so many offers!! Roger, many thanks for the Blues info, I was just going to ask if anyone knew about that. Not sure if Max will be bringing an instrument, but I'm sure that wherever he goes he'll be handed one to use!!! |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Dave the Gnome Date: 13 May 10 - 04:52 AM Well, I am still not sure if I will be at Fylde for th eweekend but if you do make it, Max, Maybe we could arrange a 'catters meet for the Saturday or Sunday? If you don't make it - no probs, honest! DeG |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Susan of DT Date: 13 May 10 - 06:48 AM Dick and I talked about the Wareham Wail. I doubt that Max's would be interested. Any possibility of someone putting the two of us us up near the Wail? |
Subject: RE: Max is coming to Whitby From: Herga Kitty Date: 14 May 10 - 02:33 AM Susan - I've sent you a PM about possible accommodation for the Wail. Kitty |
