folk scene in Vienna, Austria

I am moving from the US to Vienna, Austria in September and am wondering what the folk scene is like there? I am interested in anything going on, but especially traditional Irish as I have led an Irish band here in the States for the last year now.

Apart from that it's a fantastic city! If the universe has a center, it's gotta be Wien.

The irish-folk scene in Vienna is not what ist used to be in the 80's but there are still some sessions in several pubs. You will find a lot of irish pubs, but the music is not always irish (not even folk). The only irish group visiting Vienna are the Dubliners. In Vienna you will find a lot of blues or (even more) jazz-music. If you are looking for events try the following sites:

My knowledge is a bit out of date, as it has been fifteen years since I used to go there regularly. However, there used to be lots of little folk and blues clubs and cafés once you were outside the centre. Most tourists head straight for Kärntner Strße area around the centre, but most of the fun places to go out were around the seventh district (around Volkstheater) and the tenth district. If you make some friends there quickly, you should have a wonderful time. The local dialect might take a little time to master though!

If you are into dance contact Martin Kiff. He runs a website for EC - mostly gigs in the UK, some France, but I am sure he would know of any dancing in Austria and maybe music generally - he gets Austrian bands to Chippenham (UK).

There are several irish music bands over the border in Hungary and Veszprem is having a festival at the end of the month with Hungarians playing Irish music. Another band Pucks and fairies are based in Pecs but tour quite a bit. Comhaltas Ceoltoiri eireann used to have a branch in Budapest and one of their number used to travel weekly to Wien to teach set Dancing. Will try to find out if he's still doing it and come back to you..
