I grew up listening to Joe & Eddie because my parents loved their music. They were on continual play at our house, along with The Kingston Trio, the album Night At The Ashgrove, Barbara Dane, Jimmie Rodgers and my mother’s Broadway musicals. My father was also into flamenco and pasodobles (bullfight music). I search for their albums whenever I’m in a used record store (I’ve found four, so far) and bought the re-issue CD when it dropped in 1993. I love their dynamic singing, energy and beautiful voices. It’s great to see people reminiscing about them here. Long live the music of Joe and Eddie!

Joe Gilbert was my uncle. The family appreciates the renewed interest in Joe & Eddie. We have most of their LP recordings.

When I was quite young, I used to visit my sister in Southern California and Joe and Eddie performed at numerous "Coffee" houses which were big at that time (1960's). It was great because me as a minor could go to them and I fell in love with Joe & Eddie and was so deeply saddened when in my senior year in Idaho, I heard of Joe's death. I have 4 of their albums and pull them out occasionally and must say, their music is still brilliant.!

Joe and Eddie were quite prolific in the time they had together; at least seven albums for GNP/Crescendo Records. Their repertoire was both extensive and eclectic consisting of traditional folk material, contemporary folk, folk-rock, gospel, blues, and show tunes, but interestingly, not much in the way of the civil rights songs or anti-war songs of the sixties.

Oops, false alarm, maybe they didn't come to Britain! Our archivist reports:

"This is a quick reply to the Joe and Eddie duo. While I was looking again through the books I had another look at that one, with a magnifying glass. It isn't Joe it was JB which was John B Stewart every body called him JB. The Eddie is Eddie Saxton they were both early members of the club."

On looking over the new information about gigs played at the Topic folk club in Bradford in the 1960s, as mentioned in another thread, I see that an act called Joe and Eddie played at the Topic at a Saturday concert on February 5th 1965 (also on the bill: The Crimple Mountain Boys and John Pashley), and I assume this is the same act. So presumably they toured Britain at least once.

For most of us on the left coast, the "Gate of Horn" and a number of other notable midwwestern and east coast jazz and folk venues of the late 1950's and early sixties were something we learned of in magazines, late night TV and records. I remember Bob Gibson and Hamilton Camp as a couple of very influential guys of the period. We all stole from them.....well; maybe "gleaned" is a better choice of words. Leon Bibb was another, along with Josh White and others, who I was never privileged to see in person but who influenced many of us. Still do.

Limelighters also got the song from Bob's Riverside Records recording of it. They used many of Bob's arrangements--as did Baez and others.

Bob Gibson was a tremendous draw at Chicago's Gate Of Horn when I first encountered him my last year in high school---1959.

I think I bought the Joe and Eddie album after having seen them on one of Hootnanny type shows on TV. They were impressive live and I loved the album.

Joe and Eddie, when they first came to prominence, had to be one of the most dynamic duos ever. Their stage presence and arrangements were amazing. Both had excellent, soaring voices which blended beautifully. I can still remember being asked, repeatedly and excitedly, "Have you seen/heard Joe and Eddie?" It seemed for a time like I was the only one who hadn't in my crowd. I have often wondered what they might have accomplished had both lived to a ripe old age.

1. I learned "There's A Meeting Here Tonight" from listening to The Limelighters. About the time I heard some occasional Bob Gibson, as a matter of fact.
2. I checked FAQs and could not find anything about re-naming the thread. I thought of copying all the responses and pasting them back in a newly titled thread, but I have never seen that done, either, so Joe and Eddie's thread may have to remain that of the mystery folk singer. Changed "subject," though.

I'm thinking that "There's A Meeting Here Tonight"--the song--came from Bob Gibson's doing it and showing it to others. Joe and Eddie possibly learned it from Bob.

In Aug.'66 Joe died, and as of 2007, Brown continued to work as a producer and arranger, most recently with the musical group Gravity.

The only black duet based in Southern California in which one member died in the 1960s that I can remember was Joe and Eddie.

I wish I took better notes when I'm surfing the CD and folk music websites. Can anyone give me some leads on who this musician is?
I think he was a black gentleman who recorded in the 1960s and gained some popularity in California. I believe he may have had a partner in a duet, and he or they released 2 albums. His music was pretty much along the lines of early 1960s folk music, and that struck me as unusual because the release dates for the albums were mid-60s, I think. The guy died in the late 1960s. The samples on line displayed a pretty rich voice. My frustration is that his music is available for downloading somewhere on the internet, but I have lost track of his name. Can you help?
