Subject: RE: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: Bat Goddess Date: 09 Apr 13 - 02:16 PM Doreen, I think the group you're looking for are the marine docents at UNH. I'm not sure exactly how to contact the singers, but the director of the UNH marine docent program is mark.wiley@unh.edu. See http://www.seagrant.unh.edu/seachanteysingers None of them are a part of our shanty sing in Portsmouth, but some of us have performed at the same venue as they have. Linn |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: GUEST,Doreen Bernier Wolfeboro Seniors Club Date: 09 Apr 13 - 01:12 PM I have been trying to find a group of 'Shanty Singers' that came over to Wolfeboro to entertain the Seniors--maybe 3 years ago--seems they had a connection to the University--there were about a dozen of them--great entertainment-could you help me? |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: Charley Noble Date: 18 May 10 - 08:43 PM Severn- That is the beauty of the great sidereal movement by which time is commonly reckoned. Or in other words "Hickory, dickery, dock!" Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: Severn Date: 17 May 10 - 09:51 PM So, the chasing of the tail makes it self-winding, like one of those tornado watches, only slower..... Ingenious! |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: Charley Noble Date: 17 May 10 - 09:15 PM Severn- The answer is obvious---- You curtail them! Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: Charley Noble Date: 17 May 10 - 08:12 PM Jon- It would be a real treat to see and hear you and Rika again. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: Bat Goddess Date: 17 May 10 - 06:50 PM Hi, Jon! It would be WONDERFUL to have you able to drop in more often. This year's Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival will again be the last full weekend in September -- this year that's Sept. 25 & 26. Linn |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: Jon Bartlett Date: 17 May 10 - 06:21 PM A real pleasure to read about what you folk get up to when the Festival's not on - I sure wish Portsmouth was closer to the W coast. What are the dates for this year's fest? We might well be in the neighbourhood! jon Bartlett |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: Bat Goddess Date: 17 May 10 - 08:38 AM Right, Marty. How did I miss that? Must have been singing instead of making notes. Do you remember where it fell in the progression so I can insert it in my list? I taped the shanty sings for many years and then transcribed and made j-cards, but I stopped doing that for some reason or other. (And I'm also not really up to speed on using my digital recorder.) I'm still not caught up on doing j-cards, either! I like having a quick reference to who was at the session, what songs were sung, what other information came out of the discussion, etcet etcet. And I like having a reference copy of a song to listen to and possibly learn. Linn |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: Bupkes Date: 17 May 10 - 08:10 AM Yes, I appreciate very much your taking time to list the songs and singers. For completeness, let me add that I sang a Carribean version of Shenandoah called "World of Misery", which I learned from one of the Golden Ring records. Marty |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: Charley Noble Date: 17 May 10 - 07:26 AM Linn- Actually it's a minor miracle that you and I and Judy can piece together a tenth of what happens in these sessions. But no one has mentioned the tray of dishes that hit the floor in the kitchen during one sensitive sea ballad. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: Charley Noble Date: 16 May 10 - 07:57 PM Linn- Excellent list. There's some corrections with regard to "Marco Polo - Tim Perkins." That should be "The Figurehead Carver - Tim Perkins" although the figurehead carved was for the Marco Polo. Also shouldn't "The Fine Old Summer Days - Marty Stock" be "The Ways of Man - Marty Stock"? Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: Bat Goddess Date: 16 May 10 - 06:04 PM (continued...) The Fine Old Summer Days - Marty Stock recitation - Nelson story, red jacket; brown trousers - Mark Down Below - Linn Out On the Rolling Sea - Barry Outside Track - Charley (toast proposed by Barry to the Press Room session(s), our waitress, etc.) Goodbye, Fare Thee Well - Mark A Parting - Judy Help Me Raise 'Em - Chris Run Come See Jerusalem - Marty & Barry Nelson's Prayer - Mark Linn |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: Bat Goddess Date: 16 May 10 - 10:34 AM Mark's wife, Keven, was also there as was Bill Lehmann and his wife Carol from Boston. Gardi was NOT there -- that was Alexander -- and Barry is Barry O'Brien. Pete Hale's father, Don, was also there, as were Carol Coronis and Bob Frost. Hutch (Emery Hutchins) was there earlier, but couldn't stay until the delayed start, alas. It's not a "Tall Ships Festival" the Piscataqua Maritime Commission (as of an issue last year) aren't suppose to use the words ""tall ships" (though I see they are on their website) and it's not exactly a festival, at least in the folk music sense of the term. The HMS Bounty and the Privateer Lynx (both of which have been in Portsmouth before) will be at the Portsmouth Commercial Fish Pier over Memorial Day weekend. A group of us, as The Dog Watch, will be singing on Saturday afternoon to entertain people waiting in line to tour the ships and again at the evening reception. There is usually admission charged to tour the ships. This is a new location for the tours. Here's the list -- Haul Away, Joe - Chris Madden Fire Merengo - Charley Sally Brown - Barbara Benn Marco Polo - Tim Perkins Alabama John Cherokee - Barry O'Brien Sailboat Malarkey - Mark Ryer Blackbird Get Up - Jeri Jolly Roving Tar - Chris Outward Bound - Charley Flash Company - Linn Sugar In the Hold - Carol Coronis Safe In the Harbor - Mark Blood Red Roses - Alexander Thompson Cape Cod Girls - Barbara Benn London Julie - Justine Donovan Mobile Bay - Charley Ten Stone - Linn Pay Me My Money Down - Barry Running Down to Cuba - Bruce MacIntyre Clear Away the Morning - Tim Good Ship Calabar - Chris City of Columbus - Mark Grey Funnel Line - Alexander Common British Tar - Judy recitation about Nelson's Blood - Earl (whose last name I don't know) Roll the Old Chariot Along - Chris Cannery Shed - Linn (to be continued later -- I've got to go to work) Linn |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: Charley Noble Date: 16 May 10 - 10:31 AM Correction to the above: It was Mark who told the story of Admiral Nelson and the "brown pants" followed by Linn leading "Down Below." The story Earl told was how after his death at Trafalgar, Nelson was shipped home in a cask full of rum, which arrived back in England remarkably dry. Chris followed this story with a rendition of "Roll the Old Chariot" with it's leading verse of "A drop of Nelson's blood wouldn't do us any wrong." Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: Charley Noble Date: 15 May 10 - 10:55 PM We just got back from Portsmouth and certainly had a good time. It was great to see a crew from Gloucester again, the folks from the Boston area, and our other good friends. I actually had some time to talk with Emery and Chris while we were waiting for the folks upstairs to finish up, and that is highly unusual at a shanty session. Let's see, who was there: Tom and Linn Judy and me Bruce and Jane Mark Chris Jeri Barbara Marty Justine Carol Barry Gardi Tim Earl- who told the story of why Admiral Nelson called for "brown pants" before one of his great sea battles. The songs I led included: Fire Maringo-traditional Outward Bound (C. Fox Smith) Mobile Bay (C. Fox Smith) The Outside Track (Henry Lawson) Judy led: Common British Tars (Ron Baxter) A Parting (C. Fox Smith) We're hoping to see some more of you at the Tall Ships Festival in Portsmouth in two weeks. I'll be there with the Roll & Go crew. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: SINSULL Date: 15 May 10 - 09:06 PM I thought it was next Saturday too and had it on my schedule. Was even learning a new song. Well, maybe June. |
Subject: May Shanty Sing, Portsmouth, NH USA From: Bat Goddess Date: 15 May 10 - 08:55 PM Tom didn't announce this month's sea music singaround at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH, but it happened anyway -- we're just home from a lovely evening of song. The Press Room management had been a bit confuzzled about the fact that, since May 1st was actually the first Saturday, today was the THIRD Saturday despite being a bit earlier in the month than usual, so they'd inadvertently booked an event upstairs that lasted until 5. The event was a very loud "recital" of young bands ("Oh, cool! We get to play in a BAR!") attended by parents and other young afficionados of that sort of music. Made talking downstairs while waiting for the session to begin a bit difficult. But it was worth the wait to watch the faces of the kids, their parents and audience as they came down the stairs. I think they were amazed at the volume singers could achieve WITHOUT amplification. And the harmonies. A couple mothers stuck around to listen and find out more about the music. We hauled in some crew from Gloucester, Boston and Richmond, Maine and even a couple visiting from Mystic who wandered into the trad session last night and were thrilled to find there was a sea music session today. I'd posted the session, too, on the Portsmouth, NH Facebook feed and we drew at least one person from not too far away who was unaware of the session(s). He, too, exclaimed his enthusiasm and will be back. I'll post a song list later, but right now I've got some frantic cleaning of a recently exposed corner to finish before the electrician gets here tomorrow. I think I'm out of enzyme cat odor remover -- hope Febreze will get us through tomorrow. Linn |
