Subject: Lyr Add: THE BLACK JACK GYPSY DAVE CAME...
From: Leadfingers
Date: 18 May 10 - 07:10 AM

Following on from the Adapting Trad Songs thread - An old mate , Louis Robinson , decided that his group (Green Ginger) were getting TOO many requests for one or another of the Gypsy Davy songs , so rather than learn them all , or ignore a request , he wrote one that fitted whichever song was requested , and here it is .

The Black Jack Gypsy Dave Came Whistling Over The Hill With Six of His Mates. (Louis Robinson)

The Wraggle Taggle Gypsy with his eyes full of sin
Reached the tall flats and saw her at the window,
Said, "Now, Honey, you'll do fine
Hanging out the washing on the washing line.
This is Black Jack Davy over again,
Up in the elevator eight nine ten."

Well, he knocked on her door (*) (*) (*)
And she said she'd never seen a man like this before.
Well, he rolled her around for an hour or three,
Said, "You've just been with the Gypsy Davy.
I am known as a king among men
I'm bigger I'm stronger I'm sexier than.

"Now what the Hell you doing in this place?
Your loving man treats you a real disgrace.
You and me we could travel far.
I've got a bit of money and a beat-up car."
So she packed her bags and with a permanent wave
Left with the Gypsy Dave.

Home came her loving man later that day
And the nosey neighbours told him that she'd had it away.
He wouldn't believe that she could misbehave.
He hadn't seen the man they call the Gypsy Dave.
So he jumped in his Jaguar, gleaming white,
And lit off in the cold dark night.

Down the motorway out to the West
He drove through the streets like a man possessed.
He came to a field full of old scrap metal,
And he said to himself this is where I bet I'll
Find my love, my dearest dear,
Shacked up in a caravan here.

Sitting on the steps of a yellow one he spied her.
He ran till he came to her side and cried, "Sir!
Take my money take my housem
But please don't take my ever-loving spouse."
She said, "You treated me wrong, now you've landed with a bump,
So you can go and take a running jump."

"But last night you lay in your G Plan Bed
With dreams of fitted carpets in your pretty little head.
Tonight you'll sleep in a bug-ridden van
In the cold and damp with your travelling man."
"I don't care what you say," said she.
"This is where I really want to be."

"But I'm a rich man and my credit is sound.
I'm living in a fashionable part of town.
I've got twenty-three deals that will come out right."
She said, "I'd rather get MY medicine at night.
I don't care if you rant and rave.
I'm sticking with the Gypsy Dave."

Now the moral of this story is, if I can only say,
There's a Gypsy Davy passing by your window every day,
So if your loving man isn't treating you right,
Just pack your bags and light out one night.
You may grow quite old and wan,
But Gypsy Davy goes on and on.

Leadfingers - I see that your old mate Louis Robinson is still performing, but based in Atlanta. In addition to playing in Green Ginger and the A40 Improvement Scheme, Louis ran a Friday night folk club at the Goodwill to All in Wealdstone in the late 1960s....
