Subject: Killen song about fishermen From: Wotcha Date: 12 Aug 99 - 03:54 PM At Mystic this year, Lou Killen sang a song about the decline of the fishing industry in some Canadian region. I would like to know if anyone knows the title to the song, and where it is recorded? |
Subject: RE: Killen song about fishermen From: Barbara Date: 12 Aug 99 - 04:00 PM Would it be "No More Fish, No Fishermen" by Ottawa singersongwriter Shelley Posen and John Goss (tune), about the demise of the cod fishing industry in Newfoundland? If it is, let me know and I'll transcribe the words from the second Finest Kind CD (Heart's Delight). Was written in 1996. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: Lyr Add: NO MORE FISH, NO FISHERMEN (I S Posen) From: Charlie Baum Date: 12 Aug 99 - 04:36 PM From Ann Downey's Finest Kind Website:
NO MORE FISH, NO FISHERMEN
Out along the harbour reach
No more shoppers in the stores
Once from Ship Cove to Cape Race
Back before the Second War
Farewell now to stage and flake |
Subject: RE: Killen song about fishermen From: CeltArctic Date: 12 Aug 99 - 10:18 PM Could it have been Stan Roger's song, "Make and Break Harbour"? Ian Robb and Finest Kind have also recorded that one. Moira Cameron |
Subject: RE: Killen song about fishermen From: GeorgeH Date: 13 Aug 99 - 06:08 AM Hey, it's great to hear Lou Killen's still playing festivals over there. One of the stalwarts of the early years of the revival. Can we have him back, please?? G. |

Subject: RE: Killen song about fishermen From: Wotcha Date: 13 Aug 99 - 01:35 PM Barbara and Charlie: That was it. Thanks very much! There's a small group of "folkies out here in the desert ... we'll take Killen instead; our turn! Not much beer though ... It would be neat to have him sing at the launching of the Al Hashemi II next year-- a huge wooden dhow/baghla (mule ship) -- something that makes the Mystic's Amistad look like a Jolly Boat (Jolly apparently coming out of the local lingo, ghelli or fishing boat). Cheers, Alhamdalla Brian |

Subject: RE: Killen song about fishermen From: kytrad (Jean Ritchie) Date: 13 Jun 02 - 08:29 PM Well, he was here in my house, today, recording in our modest little Greenhays studio, with engineer my son Jon, some material for his forthcoming recording (to do with wit, wisdom, recitations, and other wondrous recallings, of his childhood home). Jon, coming up to the kitchen for drinks refills (iced tea and water, thank you) couldn't stop chuckling. "What?" I said. "Darned funny man," he replied. Louie says he now lives in the wilds of Minnesota. |
