Subject: RE: Folk City -50th anniversary of opening From: Mark Ross Date: 23 May 10 - 01:52 PM Tell Bob that I remember his grandfather most fondly, who gave me my 1st professional gig(aside from playing the basket houses). It was opening act and MC for Brownie McGhee & Sonny Terry back in 1967. I was paid $5, a bottle of beer and a sandwich. Mark Ross |
Subject: Folk City -50th anniversary of opening From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 23 May 10 - 12:40 PM While the club is no longer in existence, the club still holds a special place in the hearts of folkies. On today's edition of my radio show, my guest will be Bob Porco, grandson of original Folk City owner Mike Porco. Bob is writing a book on his grandfather and the club, and he is also producing a special "reunion" concert to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening. Mike Porco turned a little neighborhood Italian restaurant in Greenwich Village into a mecca for folkies. WFDU-FM's TRADITIONS can be heard from 3 to 6pm ET, and the show will be streaming live on our website - and archived for two weeks - at www.wfdu.fm Bob will be on during the second hour. |
