Somehow I managed to not mention our dear friend Janie Meneely properly. In addition to her stunning performance as Miss Olivia Kumtwat, she also wrangled a sparkly new performance venue on unbelievably short notice after the previous one disapperaed, and stopped a air conditioner inspired flood of biblical proportions flowing from a ceiling light fixture.
She is the superwoman of folk music.

Ken, I don't know the Gogama Whore, but I know "The Winnipeg Whore" in a version collected in Ontario. It's one of the "whore steals a man's watch and money" family. First verse:

When first I tripped on the Chippewa River,
When first I came to Canadian shore,
There I met a Miss O'Flaherty,
Commonly known as the Winnipeg whore,
Commonly known as the Winnipeg whore.

I also have a "Halifax Whore," collected in Newfoundland. This, by contrast, is a version of the "whore gives a man the clap" family. First verse:

Oh, it's my first night in Halifax harbor,
My first night for to go on shore,
Steer my course for the first half-center,
And have a shot at a Halifax whore.

Is either of these a version of the song you're looking for?

Ken, I'd love to see the Gogama Whore if you are successful in your search.
We gleaned much of our materials from the debris of our own misspent youths. We also did scholarly research in Mudcat's Digital Tradition, and the hallowed halls of the US Library of Congress. I reconstructed one verse of Barnacle Bill from scraps loaned by a sailor friend.
The concert was recorded, so we will know in the fullness of time if the sound is good enough to release. Outside if that, I know there are many rude song recordings out there. I would start with the discography of Mr, Oscar Brand.

I'm looking for the lyrics to an old Ontario Bawdy Song. The Gogama whore. Glad to see someone is keeping these cherished old ditties alive. Is there a place one might look for recordings? current or otherwise of some of these?

Didn't ask of the price of beer but it might be nice to have a fundreaiser for the peasant. Things are indeed bleak. We be at glen echo sunday to hear the rapper and brass band. I would go sat but tried that last year but everyone I wanted to hang out with deserted me....
Someday....I will get to play....but up and down they go. We are always here though.

Guest above was me.
I want to also thank Sandrolin for her(?) shockingly detailed report on the concert. If I'd known folks were paying that much attention, I would have tried to do a better job!
Charlie, you will be pleased to hear that Riki singing a version of "The Old She-crab" was a very well received high point of the show.

Good to know that the Bawd still walks!

As for me well....I suffer from an excess of imagination as it is and already suffer enough the old fart that I am.....sort of like being the castrated cat on the other side of the glass from a tasty "bird"- indigestion.

Had quite the bawdy show in value village. Wherever I went there was this baltimore guy 6 foot and pear shaped older, tee shirt shorts, crew cut... wandering around and every time he came close to a beautiful latin girl his head lit up and he smacked his lips as if he was looking at a beautiful steak and pitcher of beer. Stop me before I get there....

Then again life with the two women I currently am confined with has taught me that they are simple the agents of the devil.

I tend to go with the old Irish celtic solution- The Little Jug she's the girl for me. Tis true, true, when your hewin days are doon!

The one thing that occurs to me that due to the internet men these days have probably gazed upon more naked women than any other previous generation. Some say I will be walking around in the supermarket and will start recognizing each woman- "hey its you -
liked you in that porn shot"

Maybe my role should be to sit out front of bawdy nights selling white canes. Has anyone ever done a study of the rate of post adolescence blindness in american males>

Oh well speaking of which I must go for the little jug about now.
Maybe next time you can find a venue where I can pull up my truck which has naked ladies- mannequins... around the truck bed.
Did a middle school a few weeks ago. Pulled up with the truck. Art teacher was delighted, crowd formed. After a while I was introduced to the principle....not the usual introduction I knew the look on her face....same as before the paddle used to come out in my youth....I knew right away....I guess you would like them better with bathrobes....Yes could you do that she beamed>? I said sure. I had a whole set of bright bathrobes in great patterns and had them all dressed in a moment.

Just as I did a little boy and his friends came to see the truck. He had rounded them up.....he said unto me hey mister werent they naked before? I said yes....and he told his friends "told ya" I said it was getting late and they were going to bed and had to get their bathrobes on.

So it goes....
Enjoy it when you are young.
But remember....agents of the devil.

As flan obrien said "a pint of plain is your only man" And if you want to know about the truth about women just elect Palin. (hey same letters as plain) I drift off....I have pulled pork in the oven and folk music on out back.

I would like to Add my words of thanks to Steve's comments.
We had a great time doing the show; and that was largely due to the enthusiastic participation of our audience and our support crew.

Donna, Paul, Liz, Stephanie, Charlie, and Patrick all made things run very smoothly; and the crowd could not have been better.
Most notably, without Janie's lightning-fast response to the loss of our previous venue the show would not have happened at all!

I do have to 'fess up that many of my Limericks were stolen wholesale from various contributors right here on Mudcat.

Thank you, Sandrolin! Very nice to know you enjoyed it!

Long ago my real identity was "outed" on Mudcat due to some of my published scholarship, so many here know that I'm Steve Winick. I was one of the four principal performers (along with Skivee who started the thread, Riki Schneyer, and Jennifer). I'm also the author of "The Sexualphabet," an alphabet song based on the "Sailor's Alphabet," but for sex terms.

We had great guest spots by Janie Meneely and Joe Hickerson, and although Myron Bretholz couldn't make it, we pressed Charlie Pilzer into service on tuba, which was a blast in all senses!

I especially appreciate you recognizing the dramatic aspect of the show, and the risk it represented for us. Jennifer's an ethnomusicologist and I'm a folklorist, so we are much more accustomed to giving factual background to our songs than to coming up with funny fictional stories for them! I think this is the case for Riki as well. But Jim hit it right on the head (as it were)--our usual approach just wouldn't work for an evening of bawdy songs, and would have been boring. ("Sex" and "dry" just don't work well together!)

It was Jennifer's idea to set the show in the fictional "South Penistone" in Cornwall (the real Penistone is in Barnesly, Yorkshire), and Skivee and Jennifer together came up with some of the scene-setting material (a fundraiser to establish the "Prostitutes, Entertainers, and Navigators Institute of Salvation," or P.E.N.I.S. for short.) Then each of us came up with our own character, costumes, jokes, limericks, and song introductions within that universe. Lots of fun, and lots of work. As you said, it was a risk...only Skivee is very accustomed to that kind of show from his work in the Pyrates Royale, so we took inspiration from him and tried to be as entertaining as he is.

Anyway, it was terrific working with such talented people, and even if we hadn't gotten much of an audience it would have been great fun. It's really gratifying that many folks turned up, and that most people seemed to enjoy it so much. (After all the innuendo we were throwing around, "gratifying" sounds kinda dirty, but it's not...!)

Sandrolin, do you mind if we quote you in the publicity for next year's show?

Just returned from the show....
I can a-shore you it was any BUT boooooring..

True this type of concert does have the potential to sink like lead but these performers understand how risk taking and creativity marry. They choreographed the suite of songs and limmericks within the context of a two act musical play situated in the town of Pen/is---- aka the Pen/iston Home.
Janie's hilarious quick paced opening narration introduced the characters and included fun punning during the entire opening presentation. They were all in beautiful costumes that portrayed their characteris persona.

Some stand out performances were
Sexu-alphabet
Friggin in the Riggin
bang bang lulu
*****Hairs on Her Dickie Di-Do--- (we all stood up and harmoniously provided the chorus)
Brooklyn town/ Walking Down Canal Street
Baltimore Whores
Mac Arthur's Fart
Oh What a Beauty--- which included a tuba--
Also an incredible REALLY bawdy version of Barnacle Bill The
Sailor
(For ease of audience participation several of the tunes were keyed to traditional melodies ..for example Sweet Betsy From Pike

During the intermission Pen/is Institute featured some lovely Pen/is shaped and other similarly organically correct shape cookies and cakes (use your imagination and then add 100%)--yummy with strawberry and / or whip cream

The overall production from Jennifer and co. was way more than anyone had a right to expect and absolutley brilliant ..Too bad you guys weren't here. It's not too early to book for next year for the second annual Bawdy songs concert. Unless we maybe could convinve them to do it twice a year:-)

Fair winds and starry skies
Sandrolin

Bawdy and erotic songs figure pretty highly in my preferences, but, unless they are presented right an evening of them can be very boooooooooooooring.

I'll be there, in the sunshine or porn reign.

If this proves a success, they'll be taking the show on the road to Korea, as "Bawdy In Seoul". A Korea Move for all involved.

I'm sure the folks next door at The Seekers' Church, who have hosted musical events of other natures for some of those involved, will be open all night, hoping to save a few familiar souls, if only maybe for a rainy day.

I take it an "Electric Maid" denotes the shocking (the first time, revolting every time thereafter) aftermath of the losing of an acoustic maidenhead.....

Someone should do the unexpurgated version of "The Old She-Crab."

We did one of these bawdy musical events some years ago in Portland and had a whole lot of fun.

"The Vicar of Bayswater"? "Charlotte the Harlot"? "Friggin' in the Riggin'"?

Wow, it's been along time since these were done on any semi-regular basis.

(I assume the spirit of Dave Olive will be on hand?)

P.S. - Joe Hickerson, Myron Bretholz, and Janie Meneely will all be joining us for a guest spot or two.

Especially for this occasion, Janie has finished a new song called "Three Red-Headed Sisters" (but does the rug match the curtains?)

Joe has promised to sing "Big Black Sausage."

I spent all weekend making little anatomically plausible pound cakes, so I guess you could also call this a Bake Sale!

It's really more like a Harlem Renaissance-style Rent Party... This tradition seems to resurface every time there's a Depression. The Electric Maid will certainly provide the right atmo, little urban bohemian space that it is, with a liquor store right around the corner...

Are your Memorial day weekend plans feeling too wholesome? Well, I've got your solution.
Some of my mates and I will be performing various rude and disgusting songs this coming Saturday night in the lovely Washington DC suburb of Takoma Park.

I'll be joining Steve Winick(Ships Company Shantymen), Jennifer Cutting (The Ocean Orchestra0 and Riki Schneyer to present some of the least socially acceptable ditties we know. Audience participation will be encouraged for certain parts of the show.

This is a fundraiser for the Ocean Orchestra's next project. We expect to be very offensive; so a good time will be had by all.

Tickets: $18 in advance, $25 at the door. Limited seating…reservations strongly suggested. 443.786.0463 or janiemeneely@gmail.com. BYOB: bring your own booze.
Bawdy baked goods & coffee available for sale.
8 p.m. Saturday, May 29th, 2010 at the Electric Maid in Takoma DC

268 Carroll Street, NW, Washington, DC 20012
Just across street from 7-11 and Takoma Metro
Free parking at Takoma Metro Station!

I should underline that profanity and sexually explicit material, and liquor will all be in attendence.
The show is intended for immature adults only, no actual children will be admitted no matter how much they beg.
