From: GUEST
Date: 19 Jul 10 - 09:36 AM

Just got back today after another fab Saddleworth festival. Many thanks to the committee and all. Great music from older hands and again as always at Saddleworth, some fabulous young talent like Twelfth Day; great combination and sound from Catriona's fiddle and Esther Swift playing a wonderful harp - instrument normally seen in a sympnony orcestra.

Sat night with Dougie Maclean was brilliant! Hometowners & Tony Downes were fab as ever - glad to see Pete 'sheep crook' MacMillan recovering well after op; Hissyfit, harmoniously brillient as ever and loads more. Still the rain but not as many puddles on the puddleworth campsite this year - my tent endured.

Wars of Roses? well as Orson says, some great broadsides but Ackrington allstars just tipped the balance methinks (or was it that wad of notes in Stan's hands?)

So let's hope and look fwd to a 14th (my 13th) be terrible if this geat annual get-together didn't continue - mebbe a few more fund-raising evets b4 then ?

Well another one over everyone did seem to enjoy their selves the workshops and the best poetry I have heard in a very long time where very well attended .On a sad note the Judge of the War of the Roses was fined £25 by the Parish Council for leaving his deaf aid in the green room .All the best till next year.

Great Festival as ever. Thouroughly enjoyed it and great to meet up with many folk buddies. Also very pleasantly suprised and delighted at how dry the campsite was. Big bonus!

Roll on next years festival when the Tykes will snatch it back!

MC Fat did an excellent job at keeping both sides in check this year.

However, the 'worldly wise' and 'trench battle experience' of Sid, Scowie and Stan with The Hometowners adding their a 'subtle' calming influence here and there, thoroughly overwhelmed the Yorky's.....I'm glad to say.
Loved it when Scowie had a dig at Ray for drinking water out of a beer glass and Sid commented that he thought it was Yorkshire beer.
Great stuff.
It was broadsides like that, that brought the cup back home to Lancs.
Not even Hissyfit's class, nor David Swans songs were enough for the Yorky's this time.

Just come back (Sunday Afternoon)from an excellent weekend.Singarounds were as usual real quality. some of the new events (unsheduled), like the persiphone wet garland dress workshop were phoarr amazing there were some 'outstanding' entrants. Thanks to the partipants of 'The War of the Roses' the Lanky's won this year despite a sterling performance from the Tykes. many attempts were made to bribe the MC but they failed although request to Linda (from Hissyfit) more shortbread please. Barry & Ingrid Tyneside slot was really good too. Hope the Festival continues next year.

Anyone going to the thing next weekend? It's a mumble organised by mumble, and it's at a pub called mumble in the Yorkshire Dales. (It was late and I was tired.)

Seriously, the definite information I've managed to retain is:

something with folk music involved
free to get in
weekend of 24th-25th July
pub
Yorkshire Dales

Can anyone fill in the blanks (or the mumbles)?

Take no notice of pip radish noreen there's loads of singing all over the place.

All I can say is what I saw last year: one humungous singaround at the Con Club (which was good but too big), after which I wandered around Uppermill looking for somewhere to sing & not finding much. Later in the day I found my way to the Waggon and sat in on a small singaround there, but it was a jumping-in session and it was all guitars and everyone else seemed to know each other... mutter mumble whinge whine...

But if you hook up with someone who (a) knows their way around and (b) knows you (quite important), I should think you'll have a great time.

Oh and thank you, Pip, Joe and Chris, for your helpful input.
(Scowie just about swept me off my feet there!)

I remember great times in the Con club in former times with the previous licencees- we went back to sing at their retirement party.
And singing with Shellbacks in the packed, right hand room of a pub- would that be the Wagon?
I'm sure it will all come back to me!

Noreen, As a debutante (a single one that is!)and myself being a True-Born Lancastrian of the old blood, I would consider it a great honour, and indeed a considerable privaledge to be allowed to escort you through the minefield that Saddleworth Festival can be for the uninitiated.
Fear not gentle maiden, your honour is secure and your future is set on favourable.
I shall contact you myself by other means, with arrangements that will mean you shall be looked after every step of the way, and your comfort and security shall be my only concern, and a pleasurable outcome assured.
My you sleep soundly in this knowledge,
Your devoted friend, Scowie.

I second what Joe has said Noreen. Just head for 'The Waggon' pub on the main road through Uppermill where you will happily find yersen snuggling into great singarounds all afternoon and all night in great company.

It is part of the very big 'Fringe' element of this brilliant festival and therefore ticketless and completely free.

You will be free to just listen or join in with the choruses or have a go at a song or two if you wish to. It is all very informal, so no pressure.
Just do and go where you want as the fancy takes you and as you will know from your previous visits to this festival you will find that you are very welcome and in good company wherever you go.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Chris

How did that sneak up on me? Might have to give it a miss this time.

Noreen - I'm not sure if it's a good festival for lone singaround-seekers. (If you went in a group you could have a ball.) I went last year (on my own) and went to the big singaround - which was very big; far too big for anyone to get two songs. There were odd sings in pubs around the place, but the one I sat in on was a bit too chummy and informal for me - the kind of sesh that's best when you're there for the second or third time. So my final score was one song total, although I did hear some very fine singing.

I am planning to make the long trip North to Uppermill once more... and looking forward to seeing old friends again.

Can someone tell me, as I'm not much of a one for sitting in concerts, are some singarounds in ticketless venues? And is it possible to buy tickets for individual events if required (such as the much-hyped War of the Roses)? And when is this battle taking place?

It's some time since I've been and was always here as a Shellback before so got in everywhere anyway.

Forecast is for sun on Saturday!

The brother blindly shed the brother's blood;
The father rashly slaughter'd his own son;
The son, compell'd, been butcher to the sire.
All this divided York and Lancaster..."

The Civic Hall will be like a sauna, whatever the weather. I shall have those stage lights on so high you will need 'Factor 150' UV/Sun protection and welding goggles for shades!!

Only joking, there is a hose pipe ban so the weather will be like the Sahara.

The best we can offer is a microphone to play your guitar into.
You will then have two vocal mics and one instrument mic (many artists prefer that). If not, perhaps you could borrow a guitar with a built in pick up and the guitar will still be heard even if you are not always stood right in front of the guitar mic. Agree with you about Cleck.
