Subject: RE: olddude - Losers From: olddude Date: 31 May 10 - 11:38 AM Thanks Gnu :-) bit worried about this one since so many people know the song .. try to get it right but not imitate Dave since no one really can |
Subject: RE: olddude - Losers From: olddude Date: 31 May 10 - 10:57 PM one exception DWDITTY is as good as anyone at Dave's guitar style and voice |
Subject: RE: olddude - Losers From: Rapparee Date: 31 May 10 - 11:13 PM It's good. Quit yer worryin'. |
Subject: RE: olddude - Losers From: Bobert Date: 01 Jun 10 - 08:05 AM Well, seems like we've had this converstaion before but this song is a quiet and somewhat introspective song but not a blues song but... ...I donno about opening with it... Unless this crowd is like one of them where you can hear a pin drop, which BTW ain't all that much fun to play to, I'd open with something more up-beat that moves a little quicker just to get folks in the mood... A song like this has it's place in any folks set but ya' can't build a set around these kinds of intropective songs... I do a song somewhat like this that Blind Jefferson wrote entitle "One Kind Favor" ("Please keep my grave kept clean...") that is like "Loser" in that way and ya' kinda have to set it up in the middle of a set as a transitional ("tragic relief"...lol) song that has to be follwed with something that is more upbeat and hopefull... BTW, sets are kinda fun to put together, Oldster... Might of fact there are some formulas and rules to putting them together... Rule 1: Don't begin or end with a "weepy" song... Rule 2: Don't use the same key in consecutive songs... Rule 3: If ya' have a weeper then put it in the middle of the last half and be sure to do a little intro (talking) before doing the song... Those are just fir starters... Have a great time... B~ |
Subject: RE: olddude - Losers From: GUEST,BanjoRay Date: 01 Jun 10 - 11:24 AM I've loved the blues and Van Ronk for many years. You do a fine version, but the only slight criticism I have is the gentleness of the guitar doesn't quite go with the harshness of the song - the notes are fine, just needs a little more power in some of them at critical points - make 'em zing a bit, and fit the power of what you're singing! Good luck with it Ray |
Subject: RE: olddude - Losers From: Will Fly Date: 01 Jun 10 - 11:31 AM At Dan's request, I've done an internet "collaboration". He emailed me the mp3 of the song, and I've added some guitar before sending it back to him as a 2-track song. I've no doubt he'll be putting a link to this arrangement somewhere! Interesting comment from Ray. I hadn't heard the song before Dan posted it. My added notes try to fit with Dan's version - whether they add "zing" or not, I really couldn't say! :-) |
Subject: RE: olddude - Losers From: SINSULL Date: 01 Jun 10 - 11:48 AM I like it Dick. I give it a ten. Hard G on Genghis Khan I believe but I may be wrong. Stop apologizing for being talented Dan. This is a tough crowd and they will tell you the truth if not in the thread in a PM. How's the newset member of the family, Baby Dominick? SINS |
Subject: RE: olddude - Losers From: olddude Date: 01 Jun 10 - 02:01 PM Sins, he is adorable, thank God for internet skype. I would be a basket case for sure :-) Great suggestions for sure. Jayto is always telling me I have to rough it up a bit when I try to do like a Van Ronk or Waits ... He is right for sure like you folks suggested Folk is more my alley but I love playing the different minors and dim chords those guys use a lot .. fun ... Gotta post Will's version also. He added some guitar to my pickin ... Thank you my friends |

Subject: RE: olddude - Losers From: VirginiaTam Date: 01 Jun 10 - 02:40 PM Having never heard the song, I had nothing to compare it to. But that don't mean my thinking it's great means nothing. It's great and Floozies can dance to it. |
