Subject: Origins: Come On Up To the House From: Richie Date: 01 Jun 10 - 02:29 PM Hi, Apparently Tom Wait's "Come On Up To the House" is a spiritual. Where did it come from? Are there other lyrics? TY Richie |

Subject: RE: Origins: Come On Up To the House From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 01 Jun 10 - 10:52 PM I vaguely recall a gospel song "Come up to the house." Can't locate it. It was no relation of the Waits song- something about coming up to the house of God. I couldn't understand much of what the NZ group were singing. Dunno. |
Subject: RE: Origins: Come On Up To the House From: wysiwyg Date: 02 Jun 10 - 09:13 AM There is another gospel song ("Come on in this house") that sounds (to me) a lot more like what might have flowed out of the spirituals tradition. It's hard to be sure, tho, anytime someone sez a song "is a spiritual"-- for many reasons. One reason is that authentic spirituals ARE still flowing out of memory, bubbling up in present generations from songs learned from the grandmothers. For this reason the "Spirituals" permathread lists ANY song whose possible spirituals relationship is discussed-- not to "label" the song as a spiritual but to make a discussion about it findable. ~Susan |

Sarah is a young woman of whom central Texas folkies/old-timers/bluegrassers/older country aficionados are justifiably PROUD. See her when you can. It will be a treat for anyone who does. Tw |

Subject: RE: Origins: Come On Up To the House From: ClaireBear Date: 15 Jun 10 - 04:20 PM That's one terrific spiritual, source aside. I especially like the line "Get down of the cross, we can use the wood." Perhaps I'll suggest it for church -- we're always looking for new material. C |
