Subject: Lyr Add: Tattoo Songs? From: LadyJean Date: 25 Jun 10 - 12:30 AM I hadn't thought of this in years. Then I read through the tattoo thread. This is a song my sister learned at camp one summer, it just barely has a tune. But it's cute. I've got a daisy on my toe It isn't real, it's just for show. It's just a tattoo of a flower, So I'll look nice, while taking a shower. It's on the second toe of my left foot. It's just a stem and flower. It has no root. Becauuuse, That wouldn't look good. I've got a daisy on my toe. My right foot loves my left foot so. Anyone else know any tattoo songs? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tattoo Songs From: Padre Date: 25 Jun 10 - 01:09 AM 'Lydia the Tatooed Lady' and... We came to town to see that old tatooed lady She was a sight to see, tatooed from head to knee My uncle Ned was there; he came to gape and stare "I've never" he declared, "seen such a freak so fair." And on her jaw was the Royal Flying Corps And on her back was a Union Jack, now could you ask for more? All up and down her spine marched Queen's Own Guards in line And all ariound her hips sailed a fleet of battleships. And over her left kidney was a birds-eye view of Sydney But what we liked best was upon her chest.. My little home in Waikiki Padre |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tattoo Songs From: open mike Date: 25 Jun 10 - 04:53 PM Tom Russell's "Blue Wing" is the best tattoo song! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zG1QokdY4NA&feature=related this is an older clip, but the lyrics are most clear.. "He had a blue wing tattooed on his shoulder, or it might have been a blue bird, I don;t know...." here is a more recent version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Trjo_7Orpek&feature=related "It's dark in here, can'tsee the sky, but i look at this blue wing and i close my eyes, and i sail away, beyond these walls...." a.k. a. "Poor Man's Dream" check out my (magic marker) tattoo i got to attend a Tom Russell show. http://www.myspace.com/laurelwoodsorrel |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tattoo Songs From: LadyJean Date: 25 Jun 10 - 11:46 PM I figured somebody had the words to Lydia the Tattoed Lady. I just wondered if there were any others, like the camp song I posted. Apparently there are. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tattoo Songs From: Dave Hunt Date: 26 Jun 10 - 04:43 AM Verse from 'Rawtenstall Annual Fair' Roll up, roll up, see the tattoed lady, See the lovely lady with the pictures on her skin." In went the lads and they began to cheer, For tattooed on her back were all the towns o' Lancashire. There were Odsall Bottom, Manchester City, The town hall standin' in the square. There were Oldham, Bolton, Ashton-under-Lyne, 'Coal pit up at Burnley were lookin' mighty fine, Till someone shouted "Daddy, don't go down the mine", At the Rawtenstall Annual Fair. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tattoo Songs From: oldhippie Date: 26 Jun 10 - 08:17 AM Dave Alvin recorded a song "New Tattoo" on his Romeo's Escape CD. chorus something like: New tattoo, new tattoo Don't you worry bout what your ma and pa gonna do Everyone wants a woman like you Especially now with that new tattoo I guess you're not the woman I thought I knew Take off your dress and show your new tattoo |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tattoo Songs From: Kent Davis Date: 26 Jun 10 - 10:27 AM Billy Edd Wheeler's "Coal Tattoo" is already in the DT: @displaysong.cfm?SongID=1231 In this case, however, the "tattoo" was not created on purpose: "Somebody said 'That's a strange tattoo You have on the side of your head.' I said 'That's a blue print, left by the coal Just a little more and I'd be dead'" Kathy Mattea does fine job with it on her CD "Coal": http://www.mattea.com/KathyMatteaHome2008.html Incidentally, Kathy Mattea sings (and apparently Hazel Dickens and Judy Collins sing) "...blue MARK, left by the coal...", rather than "...blue print...". The Kingston Trio used the word "print". Kent |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tattoo Songs From: Tug the Cox Date: 26 Jun 10 - 12:05 PM There's a spoof of Jimmy Dean's 'Let the rest of the world go by, about a lady with a world map tatooed on her body. It finishes I was looking for Hong Kong, When her husband came along I let the rest of the world go by. Anyone know it? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tattoo Songs From: Tug the Cox Date: 26 Jun 10 - 12:10 PM In Anstey, in Leicestershire, in the Hare and hounds, an old matelot called Skelly used to sing a version of 'My Home in Tennessee' which he had as the last line. The Tattooed Lady John Howson has this as a World War Two parody of 'My Home in Tennessee' and remarks that the original song was written by William Jerome and Walter Donaldson in 1915,. David Hill adds: "There always seemed to me to be a line or two missing from this song, after the 'Rising Sun' line - it doesn't quite seem to balance, somehow, but that is exactly what Ruby sang. Internal evidence suggests (to me, at any rate) that this parody may be military in origin, considering the setting (exotic dancer/foreign travel/naval (navel?) imagery etc. My old dad told me that the tune was 'My Home in Tennessee' after he heard me singing it in the bath one day, but I cannot trace a song by that title. I think he recalled a similar song from his RAF days." 'Twas down in gay Paree I paid five francs to see A great big French lady Tattooed from head to knee And on her jaaaaaaaaw There was a great big man of war And on her back was a Union Jack So I paid five franc more And on her threepenny bits There was a row of battleships And on her hot cross bun There was a view of the rising sun And to the left side of her kidney Was a bird's eye view of Sydney And round the corner, The jolly 'orner, I can't tell you what I saw!! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Tattoo Songs From: Tannywheeler Date: 28 Jun 10 - 09:59 AM Speaking of Jimmy Dean: Many yrs ago he co-hosted with Mike Douglas on MD's talk show & he sang with great relish a fragment of a song. The lines went: "She keeps me warm in the winter, Shady in the summertime, And that's what I like about That fat gal of mine!!" He loved singing & did it most of his life, but put a real roof over his head with the sausage business. Tw |
