Subject: Erthe upon Erthe From: HaHa Date: 15 Aug 99 - 11:22 PM The lyric sheet to the Mediaeval Babes' "Worldes Blysse" (uh, that's folk music, ain't it?) has the refrain from this middle English poem as: "Memento, homo, quad cinis es, et in cenerem reverentis." Yet, when I listen to the song, it sounds to my ears that the final word might be "reve(r)teris", if that's a word. Anybody know Latin? |
Subject: RE: Erthe upon Erthe From: Ana Date: 16 Aug 99 - 06:06 AM I wouldn't have a clue, but they're bloody great! Hope someone can help. |
Subject: RE: Erthe upon Erthe From: T in Oklahoma Date: 16 Aug 99 - 10:56 AM That's "remember o man that dust thou art and to dust shalt thou return." So "reverteris" is probably right, "reverentis" probably a misprint. |
Subject: RE: Erthe upon Erthe From: GeorgeH Date: 16 Aug 99 - 12:00 PM Ana . . I guess that's a view you're entitled to, but to my ears [#1] they're pretty damn ordinary. Our local village college (11-16 High School) sings that sort of stuff a darn sight better . . #1] I find that, with some of the 'babes' get-ups, listening with eyes closed is less distracting; reminds me of a former bosses description of an outfit as a "gownless evening strap" . . . Cheers! George |
