I want to learn some basic Spanish to get me by on holiday - but the "Quality Improvement Agency" has decreed that teacher has to consider all this crap?????

Diversity

This is recognising and valuing difference. In the UK, diversity typically refers to age, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, physical or cognitive abilities, religion or beliefs, ethnicity, race, nationality or culture.

Equality

This is about recognising the right of all individuals and groups to be treated equally (which does not necessarily mean the same), regardless of their age, gender, race or ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, religion or beliefs.

Reasonable adjustments

Racism

Unfavourable or less good treatment directed towards some people because of their race, ethnicity, colour, culture and so on.

Stereotyping

Labelling and categorising particular groups or individuals as a result of, in the main, preconceived negative ideas and attitudes.

Under-represented learners

Groups of learners who may be under-represented might include people who are:

•        young
•        old
•        unemployed
•        from different socio-economic groups
•        disabled, including those with sensory impairments
•        from black and other minority ethnic communities
•        of a certain gender
•        from different cultural groups.

Bonzo - 'Dos cervezas por favor' usually suffices when in Spain. I paid for a private Spanish tutor a couple of years ago. He was called Dave, but spoke fluent Spanish having taught there for a few years. He never mentioned any of that crap your teacher has to consider. Perhaps the difference is that my tutor was freelance so could please himself, rather than be tied to the ultra PC local education authority? Can't remember what I paid but it was around the £15 per hour mark and he came to the house. If you scan the small ads you may find a private tutor in your area? Buena suerte!

So, the teacher simply ticks the boxes saying "ok" or "n/a". For most of them.

But the fifth one does require some thought. Try asking the teacher if they have any plans for including deaf or blind students. Do they know where to source the appropriate teaching materials?

There are other subjects taught in adult education classes where all of those issues might really need to be dealt with.

Yeah, it's so amusing to make jokes about treating the blind like human beings, isn't it?

I once had a blind friend from Germany come to visit. So I went to the tourist board office to find out what information they had available for blind tourists. I expected to get stuff like:

- a list of museums with blind-accessible collections
- a list of libraries that offered temporary lending facilities for audio or braille
- a list of internet cafes equipped with screen readers
- details of how to use a German blind person's travelpass in Scotland
- the protocol for bringing a guide dog

What the VisitScotland office gave me was a *fax page* with the address of two branches of the RNIB on it.

Now *that's* a joke.
