I'm looking for banjo players to enhance somebody's horizon.
What I want is some names to look up on youtube for players that are easy to listen to and easy to hear..and this seems like a good place to ask for help.

Any suggestions?

Not quite what you asked for, but there was a very good program on Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour about the Afro-American history of the banjo, which had a variety of styles and some very nice performances.

It is clawhammer, but played in a very lyrical style: waterbound - and look for more by Dirk Powell.

Or for something a bit different, the UK's Dan Walsh plays Egyptian music...

i wouls suggest you look at frosty morn michael neverisky youtube channel, plus there are some very good audios and youtubes by mike iverson.

Waterbound reminds me of a couple more youtubers, both who play in a very nice understated way, and both have lovely voices too...

It's a good idea to have a trawl through Patrick Costello's blog: Tangier Sound as there are some great clips of banjo players old and new, as well as Patrick's own very good frailing lessons.

If you really want to get away from clawhammer, three-finger, etc., listen to Rob Murch. Couldn't find any clips, but here's his CD.

On the other hand, if you want to see some great clawhammer (including a fretless Frank Proffitt banjo), try these:

Melissa if you are in southern Missouri or around the West Plaines area you could find some great clawhammer banjo played live. I think that Karen Kraft and Emily Dowden are still in that area. Though Emily may be in Springfield, MO now. And there is Van Colbert in Willow Springs.

Here is a link to Emily on youtube. Not the best performance in my opinion, but the best recording.
