Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me about unaccompanied female duets. I am looking for some to do with my friend. I know that essentially, we could duet with almost any song but I am looking for ones with particularly lovely harmonies.

The first one we've done is GREY FUNNEL LINE (Maddy and June)and we're working on DOWN TO THE RIVER TO PRAY. I was wondering if there were any other albums similar to the Silly Sisters we could nick (err...interpret) from? I haven't had much luck on youtube but I'm not really sure what to search for. Preferably, they would be unaccompanied, and English...and be easily found!

Thanks for any help :)

Sinéad.

Here is a fantastic version, by False Hare (Katie Weatherall and Helen Morris), of the song "WHAT WILL WE DO WHEN WE'LL HAVE NO MONEY?" [Lyrics] (originally from Mary Delaney of Cork, I think. Rather a crappy recording, but you'll get the idea.

Eileen Pratt harmonising with Eileen Pratt

Actually a lot of Graham and Eileen's stuff can be adapted for 2 women.

JEALOUS WOMAN
THE GAY GREEN GOWN
FAIR MARY OF WALLINGTON
MERLIN'S SONG
THE BLACK FOX
Graham's version of Pat a Pan is done as a round and it is wonderful.

One of Linda's songs but not sung by Hissyfit from the Sweet Minerva CD - War Song - but it gives an idea how nice they are to sing.

Turner and Herauld.

But all you need is a song, then harmonise it yourself.

Sinead

I asked this very same question on Mudcat last year, and got some very good suggestions. Here's the link to that thread.

Look forward to more ideas here too.

Sue

As well as them lovely 'Hissyfitters', I would urge you to listen to Jane and Amanda Threlfall who perform with Roger Edwards as Trio Threlfall.

Listen to TO ALTHEA FROM PRISON at myspace.com/triothrelfall

Nick, who is singing War Song in your clip?

How traditional do you need it to be? I would love to hear two complimentary voices do songs that were recorded with the same woman tracked twice such as the Cranberries' "Dreams".

Here are two, though VASTLY different, are excellent...if you can pull them off. Listen to them all the way through...at least they'll brighten your listening!

THE LAST ROSE OF SUMMER ... Maev and Hayley [lyrics]

and then, if you're so inclined.......
Watch it to the end....note the audience's reaction...

And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going ... Jennifer Hudson and Jennifer Holliday

Happy listening...both can be done with minimal accompaniment!

Here's the two of them singing the same song, individually...so you can hear it clearly!!

Holliday and Hudson

Practice, practice, practice....you can do this!

Bianca Ryan, 11years old...same song.

Break a leg!

I have loved the song "TO ALTHEA FROM PRISON" for quite some time. It is a romantic poem written by Richard Lovelace in 1642. It was put to music by Dave Swarbrick.

However, my favourite version of that is by one of my favourite and very talented acts called Churchfitters. Most beautifully sung by Rosie Short with some lovely fiddle playing by her brother Chris Short.

Can't find a version of it by them on the Internet, but it is on their CD below. Must go and play it now :-)
