Subject: Lyr Add: NEXT YEAR FINALLY CAME (Charley Pride) From: Joe Offer Date: 31 Jul 10 - 02:09 AM This is what Gene and I have so far. You can see that there are places where we disagree. -Joe- > NEXT YEAR FINALLY CAME > As Recorded by Charley Pride > > Once I knew a farmer who reaped little what he sowed > While the neighbors' crops grew prosperous all around > And every year at harvest time this farmer did no good > All the crops kept coming [from his ground] > > Chorus > He'd smile and say thank you Lord > will be better (We'll do better) come next year > I know you have a reason for it all > I'll try a little harder and be thankful for the day > When next year's crops are gathered in the fall > > The neighbors saw the times get worse > and couldn't understand > How this humble soul could could call himself a man > They would gather round the market place > and brag on their success > This farmer's fate they didn't understand > > Chorus > > Then came the day when all the land > was bare and worn-out soil > But the farmer's land kept growin' [rich with rain](rich with fame??) > Everything he [sowed] he reaped in wealthy fertile years > Thank the Lord that next year finally came > > Chorus > > TAG: Thank the Lord that next year finally came |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Next Year Finally Came (Charley Pride) From: GUEST,Gene Date: 01 Aug 10 - 11:28 PM Thanks Joe... but I wouldnt necessarily say we disagree. I just seem to have trouble understanding slurred lyrics. As I mentioned, I sang the wrong words to a couple of songs for some 20 years, then one day like a bolt out of the blue, listening to a recording by a different artist, they came thru loud and clear. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Next Year Finally Came (Charley Pride) From: GUEST,Thomas Steel Date: 21 Jul 11 - 08:43 AM Hi I've been listening to this song as well for many times. I'm Swiss and I didn't understand some words. Someone from a dictionary-forum helped me and another one by e-mail. They weren't sure either in the part "but the farmer's land kept growin' ...". Today I searched for words that sound like in the song. So one suggestion from my side is "rich with gain" because the other's don't make too much sense. I have more suggestions to change your version: all the crops = smaller crops kept coming ... when all the land = when all their land was ... farmer's fate = farmer's faith they didn't understand ... What do you think about my options? Thanks, Thomas |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Next Year Finally Came (Charley Pride) From: GUEST,Thomas Steel Date: 21 Jul 11 - 07:28 PM Hello Leeneia Do you have this song on vinyl? Did you maybe get the passages that we are all uncertain about? Especially the one about "kept growing rich with ..." I'm still unsure because it just doesn't sound like grain or gain. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Next Year Finally Came (Charley Pride) From: Beer Date: 21 Jul 11 - 09:31 PM I must look to see if I have that record. Recorded on the "Sunday Morning vinyl" eh! Just might get lucky. Curious as to how it sounds. Always like Charlie. ad. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Next Year Finally Came (Charley Pride) From: GUEST,Thomas Steel Date: 22 Jul 11 - 06:14 AM Hi Charlie Thanks for looking for that record. I have several "Sunday Morning" records. I bought them as still sealed via Ebay. Unfortunately they turned out to be quite bad in quality. There were flaws on the surface even though it was sealed. I'm not sure but I think there are a lot of bad pressings around from the earlier days. I'd really like to have a good pressing of this record for I really like all the songs on it. Actually the pronunciation of Charlie isn't very clear on this record and the voice is too much covered by the instrumental sound. Thomas |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Next Year Finally Came (Charley Pride) From: GUEST Date: 08 Oct 15 - 07:41 PM Next Year Finally Came Once I knew a farmer who reaped little what he sowed While the neighbors' crops grew prosperous all around And every year at harvest time this farmer did no good Smaller crops kept coming from his ground Chorus He'd smile and say thank you Lord We'll do better come next year I know you have a reason for it all I'll try a little harder and be thankful for the day When next year's crops are gathered in the fall The neighbors saw the times get worse and couldn't understand How this humble soul could call himself a man They would gather round the market place and brag on their success This farmer's Faith they didn't understand Chorus He'd smile and say thank you Lord We'll do better come next year I know you have a reason for it all I'll try a little harder and be thankful for the day When next year's crops are gathered in the fall Then came the day when all their land was bare and worn-out soil But the farmer's land kept growing rich with rain Everything he sowed he reaped in wealthy fertile years Thanked the Lord that next year finally came Chorus He'd just smile and say thank you Lord We'll do better come next year I know you have a reason for it all I'll try a little harder and be thankful for the day When next year's crops are gathered in the fall And Thanks the Lord that next year finally came |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Next Year Finally Came (Charley Pride) From: GUEST,Thomas Date: 05 Jan 19 - 09:50 AM Hello Actually a longer while ago I got an answer to an e-mail to Charlie Pride's management or so. After about one year I got an answer from someone who told me that he was in the band that accompanied Charlie with this song. So he knows the exact words. I was just asking about the passage "growing rich with ...". So he told me that "rich with rain" was correct. I changed the lyrics to reflect that. Thanks - Mod |
