Subject: Tech: HALP! Lost Menu Bar/Bookmarks/etc From: Ebbie Date: 29 Jul 10 - 11:00 PM Well, now, danged. I tried to empty my cache and posting history. Then I clicked Exceptions, and put this site and some others on there. BUT! I have lost the heading above the screen. I have to type everything into the URL bar. What did I do wrong? More important: How do I fix it? |

Subject: RE: Tech: HALP! Lost Menu Bar/Bookmarks/etc From: Ebbie Date: 29 Jul 10 - 11:05 PM Forgot to add: I have a dozen sites imploring me to restore their right to install cookies on me. And they don't take NO for an answer. Again: What did I do wrong? More important; How do I fix it? Dan'l? JohninKansas? Rap? Spaw? Anybody out there? |

Subject: RE: Tech: HALP! Lost Menu Bar/Bookmarks/etc From: Desert Dancer Date: 29 Jul 10 - 11:15 PM Odds are good that somehow something got deselected under View, Toolbars ... in Firefox, at least. |

Subject: RE: Tech: HELP! Lost Menu Bar/Bookmarks/etc From: katlaughing Date: 29 Jul 10 - 11:20 PM depending on your browser, you probably deleted all of your history, so you will not have any addys in the address bar until you visit sites, again. As for allowing cookies, again, need to know what browser, as Desert Dancer asked. |

Subject: RE: Tech: HELP! Lost Menu Bar/Bookmarks/etc From: Ebbie Date: 29 Jul 10 - 11:48 PM Firefox. It is true that as soon as I start typing - Mudcat, for instance - it pops up and finishes it for me. But I still don't have Bookmarks or File or Edit or View.. sob |

Subject: RE: Tech: HELP! Lost Menu Bar/Bookmarks/etc From: Ebbie Date: 30 Jul 10 - 12:23 AM I set a System Restore. No did. Even 'Help' is gone. What is that bar called? Location Bar? Toolbar? Menu Bar? |

Subject: RE: Tech: HELP! Lost Menu Bar/Bookmarks/etc From: Stilly River Sage Date: 30 Jul 10 - 12:36 AM Do you use any other browsers? Why not import the cookies and settings from one of the others and restore at least part of the old functionality? I have been using Google's Favorites for some time now. I imported my existing favorites from my most heavily used browser (these days it's Firefox, but it used to be IE) and I add favorites to the Google list then I can open it in any of my browsers. I know, it's too late for some of your list now, but it's something to think about as you move forward from this crash. SRS |

Subject: RE: Tech: HELP! Lost Menu Bar/Bookmarks/etc From: artbrooks Date: 30 Jul 10 - 12:52 AM Go to Firefox and re-download Firefox. Just to be on the safe side, download and run MozBackup first. That will save all of your bookmarks just in case the new Firefox doesn't overlay like it's supposed to. |

Subject: RE: Tech: HELP! Lost Menu Bar/Bookmarks/etc From: Ebbie Date: 30 Jul 10 - 01:24 AM I don't believe it. I Removed Firefox, reinstalled it. Still no menu bar or whatever it's called. If I could figure out how to get into Tools I'd take a look at the earlier transactions - but I don't know how to get there. Wait. That may be 'Yahoo Toolbar'. I'll try it. |

Subject: RE: Tech: HELP! Lost Menu Bar/Bookmarks/etc From: Newport Boy Date: 30 Jul 10 - 03:51 AM Try Ctrl-B - this should toggle the Bookmarks panel. Also try F11 - this switches to full screen (no top or bottom panels) & back. Those 2 just affect the display. To get at the menu items, use ALT+ F (file), V (view), B (bookmarks). They should give you the submenus. Depending on which of the above work, we'll know whether it's a view problem or something odd. Phil |

Subject: RE: Tech: HELP! Lost Menu Bar/Bookmarks/etc From: JohnInKansas Date: 30 Jul 10 - 04:26 AM I don't know about Firefox and other similar browsers, since I use IE exclusively; but recently I thought I'd lost all my bookmarks because I accidentally (well - on purpose and then forgot I'd done it) switched the view from "Favorites" to "History," and when I deleted browser history while closing the session everything (where I thought I'd see Favorites) went blank. As for toolbars, IE shows the URL box and the bar that contains it, and a bunch of kiddy-toy icons that I'm too dumb to use effectively; but has a "Tools" button where you can select display of the "Menu Bar," which is actually unambiguous and useful (for me). My Norton NIS also adds a search bar, and although I don't use their "Norton Safe Search" much, I leave it up because it gives me a flag warning if I even hover on a link to an "unsafe site." Add the Google toolbar, with about 150 choices for how yours might have been configured, and when you say "lost my toolbar" it becomes really ambiguous. Other browsers and accessories quite likely have lots of other similar choices and variations. A very specific description of what disappeared (and what may have replaced it, even if it's just "a blank space") might help someone to recognize what's happened? e.g. What labels/icons went away? And especially with "mix-n-match" AV, antiPhish, AdBlockers, etc, any one of these may have decided that perfectly innocent "add ons" and/or cookies are something nasty, in which case the problem may disappear next week when you get the next updates. Subject: RE: Tech: HELP! Lost Menu Bar/Bookmarks/etc From: JohnInKansas Date: 30 Jul 10 - 04:38 AM In IE, if you click on File|Import and Export|Export|Favorites, it will create an html document at a location you can specify anywhere on your hard drive. When you go to that html file and open it, it should open in your default browser with links that work. Other browsers should allow for something similar? You can edit the html file, and then use IE's Import|Favorites, browse to the location to tell it what to import, and all the bookmarks will be inserted back into the browser. (But you likely will get duplicates.) I just put a link to "bookmarks" in my "Favorites" in IE, and when I'm really stumped for where I put the thing I'm looking for I just use that link to go to the exported listing (which is much easier to read and is searchable) and click the link there. Hold down the {ALT} key and press the following letters in this exact order: V T M Windows Method 2. Press and release the {ALT} key.
