My mother used to say that the worst part of living during the Great Depression was that one didn't know if things would ever improve, if perhaps that was what life was going to be forever.

What you had back then was a much leaner, tougher, harder working populace than now. And a lot more privation.

Museum of Sydney had a display recently - Skint! - on life in the depression

checkout the .pdf booklet 'Makeshifts - home-made furniture from kerosene cases' to see a whole heap of human ingenuity.
