Subject: BS: The Wrong Funeral Music From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 23 Aug 10 - 08:44 AM How funerals have changed instead of the regimented service of hymns and prayers. It is a time to celebrate the life of the deseased and as part of the service favourite pieces of music which can be rock, pop or anything that was important in the person's life. My cousin Paul died a few years back, we were very close and more or less brought up together as kids. In his teens he was very much into Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, Pink Ffloyd and the Doors. His first two marriages didn't last very long and he had only been married to his third and final wife for about 10 years so none of them did not know his history or his early tastes very well. His mum was like mine in our teens, they just didn't really listen to us about anything or it seemed that way. At 47 Paul hadn't considered dying yet so hadn't really discussed what special pieces of music he would like or passages read should it happen. Anyway, it appeared his wife and son sorted his final music for the service so when we were about to enter the church I was taken aback to hear Sean Paul booming out and then later as a finale Westlife! It was not the case of liking or disliking it, it was just that no-one had done their homework or at least asked what his favourite music was growing up 'See Emily Play' by Pink Ffloyd would have been more apt and this was the last music I expected. He was less into reggae than I was so I didn't know whether to laugh or sob into my hankie, but did I mention it? Nah. What can you do? You can't have a re-run. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Wrong Funeral Music From: Splott Man Date: 23 Aug 10 - 08:50 AM There's the apochryphal tale of the person who wanted "Sally" by Gracie Fields at their cremation. Unfortunately, the operative at the service let the CD run on to the next track, which was "Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye" |

Subject: RE: BS: The Wrong Funeral Music From: Little Hawk Date: 23 Aug 10 - 11:04 AM For Shane's funeral, you'd want some kickass heavy metal music like... "Highway to Hell" |
Subject: RE: BS: The Wrong Funeral Music From: Liz the Squeak Date: 23 Aug 10 - 11:13 AM Theresa Tooley did in fact request - and get - 'Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye' at her funeral... Typical Theresa! I have an organist friend who has been asked to play 'the Ride of the Valkyries' as the coffin was taken out, and 'Great balls of fire' at a cremation.... LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: The Wrong Funeral Music From: Will Fly Date: 23 Aug 10 - 11:40 AM Friend of mine went recently. At her request, the music to leave the crematorium to was "Another One Bites The Dust"... |
Subject: RE: BS: The Wrong Funeral Music From: IanC Date: 23 Aug 10 - 11:47 AM Wrong funeral music ain't the half of it. We regularly get Quakers buried or cremated at services from other churches. On one occasion, a very vehement and quite elderly Friend who had joined The Society of Friends within 5 years of dying to ensure that things were "put straight" was buried by her son with a Methodist service, the only reason being that she happened to be living in a Methodist nursing home (he presumably just assumed she was Methodist). It was all done before we, her own congregation, found out. :-( |

Subject: RE: BS: The Wrong Funeral Music From: GUEST,Jonny Sunshine Date: 23 Aug 10 - 12:47 PM There was a story of someone who asked to be carried out to "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", only for the person cuing up the Wizard of Oz soundtrack to accidentally play "Ding Dong The Wicked Witch is Dead". One rather hopes it was just a story.. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Wrong Funeral Music From: Rapparee Date: 23 Aug 10 - 03:46 PM "We Gotta Get Outta This Place" "Mighty Quinn" "Bat Out Of Hell" Anything by the Butt-Hole Surfers.... |
Subject: RE: BS: The Wrong Funeral Music From: fat B****rd Date: 23 Aug 10 - 03:58 PM I still like the "Music from Robin Hood" one. I.E the tv theme instead of Brian Adams. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Wrong Funeral Music From: I don't know Date: 23 Aug 10 - 04:16 PM My mother actually thinks "Ding Dong the wicked witch is dead" would be very appropriate for her as she was born on Halloween and nicknamed the witch. I make no comment on this. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Wrong Funeral Music From: LadyJean Date: 24 Aug 10 - 12:53 AM A friend of mine was told that she would have to hire a musician for her grandmother's funeral. Rather than hire the man the funeral director reccomended, she decided to give the fifty bucks to a friend, and got her buddy Animal, a heavy metal musician, to play for the funeral. He played the organ. He knew three hymns and played them through twice, then "churched up" a couple of his favorites. Apparently, granny was wheeled out of the church to Mick Jagger's "Homage to the Devil". Happily most of those present didn't know the song. |

GfS< This is the gist, the list you mentioned I could understand but to have Sean Paul music in Jamaican patois was just not him and if anyone really knew him it would not have been chosen. I better have a word with my kids or I could end up with the Osmonds God forbid! |
