They have jazzed it up more than a bit but I am sure that a current Toyota ad (on UK TV), is the A part of a well known polka tune that I hear at many sessions.

Sadly the name escapes me. Can anyone help?

Yes, that's the one.

It is those notes, is it not?

hmm--have not heard either of those tunes before, in fact have not heard of that model of car, either. Are these both U.K. phenomenon?

both sound good...well all 3 actually, 2 tunes, one car...

Toyota has an interesting appetite for music. A few years ago, they offered my son's band $100,000 for their song Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story). The bidding got up to $250,000, but my son's band backed out because they didn't want to be "the band in the Toyota commercial."
My son Nic Offer is the vocalist, and seems to be identified as the leader of the band. Some online magazine interviewed him and asked where he got his interest in music. He said that he dad was an "old folkie" - but the magazine article said Nic's dad was an "old fogey."
I wonder what Toyota paid for the polka.

It's a UK ad. The tune is very well known here (well known among folkies, anyway)

It's not the whole tune, but the riff they use is the first 2 1/2 bars exactly note-for-note.

I bet the composer who wrote/plagiarised the riff has claimed full copyright on it, and probably charged a handsome fee. Now if they'd only asked my band we'd have let them use our arrangement for a very reasonable rate :)

http://phonetic-blog.blogspot.com/2010/02/buttered-peas.html

This extract from the above.

On Tuesday evening I took part in a folk music session in the depths of rural Walthamstow (London E17), and this was one of the tunes we played. (I was on the melodeon, and five other people were also playing melodeon; in addition we had several fiddlers, guitarists and so on.) One of the other musicians, a fiddler, commented that the name of the tune was actually a ¡°corruption¡± of a Welsh name Pwt ar y Bys, which he claimed meant ¡°fingering exercise¡±. He said the tune was originally a fingering exercise for harpists.
I had never heard this explanation of the name Buttered Peas before. The name does perhaps need some explaining, since we have no tunes called Buttered Parsnips, Buttered Cabbage, Buttered Potatoes or the like, nor for that matter Mushy Peas or Peas in White Sauce: so why Buttered Peas?
I didn¡¯t say anything beyond expressing polite interest, because I felt I had better check. As I suspected, Welsh pwt pʊt means not ¡°exercise¡± but ¡°stump, something short¡±. Ar y bys ar ə bi¢°s, ar ə bɨ¢°s does indeed mean ¡°on the finger¡± (though that¡¯s finger in the singular: the plural is bysedd ˈbəse©£).
It¡¯s certainly true that the Welsh name for the tune is Pwt ar y Bys (here), and it means literally ¡°something short on the finge.

In 1991 a Welsh fiddler named Mike Lease came to town and led in sessions of Welsh traditional music. He told us that Pwt-ar-y-Bys is simply a transliteration of the English phrase 'Buttered Peas.' Or maybe it was 'Butter and Peas.'

It's true that we have no tunes called 'Buttered Parsnips' and so forth. But tune names can be one-of-kind, no doubt about it. For example, I've been playing a Welsh tune called Dacw Fuwch! (Look! A Cow!) this morning.

I could post the MIDI for Pwt-ar-y Bys, if anybody is interested. Just not right now.

I'd rather hear what "Look! A Cow!" sounds like. The title amuses me. ;)

Hello, LDT. It's nice to hear from somebody who wants to play a new piece. I'll send a MIDI of Dacw Fuwch! (Look! a Cow!) to Joe Offer for posting.

We'll start a new thread, so look for one called Tune Add: Dacw Fuwch!

Yes, gnu, I thought it rather odd that I needed to log in to watch something as public as an advertisement.

As I did not know the title of the tune when the thread was started, it was not possible for me to place it in the thread title.

Perhaps now that the tune's title is established, some kind soul could now place 'Buttered Peas' in the thread title?
