It seems the recession has altered the fertility patterns... in some countries...

interesting patterns

"By MARILYNN MARCHIONE, AP Medical Writer Marilynn Marchione, Ap Medical Writer   –

The U.S. birth rate has dropped for the second year in a row, and experts think the wrenching recession led many people to put off having children. The 2009 birth rate also set a record: lowest in a century.

Births fell 2.6 percent last year even as the population grew, numbers released Friday by the National Center for Health Statistics show."

----------------------------
"The downward trend invites worrisome comparisons to Japan and its lost decade of choked growth in the 1990s and very low birth rates. Births in Japan fell 2 percent in 2009 after a slight rise in 2008, its government has said.

Not so in Britain, where the population took its biggest jump in almost half a century last year and the fertility rate is at its highest level since 1973. France's birth rate also has been rising; Germany's birth rate is lower but rising as well."

The U. S. birth rate has been slowing for some time. In 1972, it dropped to below replacement level, and has been hovering near that since.
After the drop in 2009, there has been a slight increase in 2010.
Why the drop in 2009? The economy is blamed, but the first half of that year was good.

A good argument for more immigration?

As I understand it, the low birth rate in the UK is the main reason for all that immigration of Muslims which is upsetting the apple cart over there.

You will notice that what is mentioned here is a dropped birth rate in 'rich' countries. People there have access to health care generally and contraception. I doubt the world recession has had the slightest effect on the birth rate of so-called "third world countries". The major populations there have no money, or the things we take for granted, so I do think generally world birth rate will continue to rise with or without affluence.

From news last evening it looks like the US economy could be falling again with knock on effect to world money markets. It will be interesting to see if populations figures fall again.
